The regional committees are free to re-balance sections, Midlands did this last year (or maybe the year before ?) to rebalance 3rd/4th sections
and how do you decide the relative standards of the bands?
maybe a contest held every year and then perhaps look at the last 3 years?
the 1st section is way too large, 3 down 2 up for a few...

I hate wearing the old 'lion tamer' jackets.

I was in a discussion about the pros and cons of open and closed adjudication and a very week known conductor was against open adjudication because it is impossible not to judge with your eyes and...
If we don't trust our adjudicator we might as well give up.
They do their best to give a honest opinion.

A bit disappointed
Can't edit the post so I'll add some info.
In 13 years we have been drawn in the 1st half on 5 occasions, of these 5, 3 have been our worst 3 results taken as a proportion of the number of bands...
Another slow day at work so I've been having a look back at previous Area contests for my band.
Over the last 13 years (best data I could find) it is quite clear that our best results have come...
I think we have one in the cupboard, if you can pop along Mondays and Fridays it's yours to use for as long as you like !
with the demise of Paddy Flower (what happened there?) is there any form of prediction contest/comparison/bit of fun for the Areas this year?
so quite a few (every) band could be in trouble in March then?
I dint think I've ever played at a contest where none of the parts were modified without the permission of the composer/ arranger

why are cornet players told to use the biggest mouthpiece they can handle and bass trom players told the total opposite?

Who is/are the 13th band in the Midlands 2nd section area contest?
12 Bands played last year, 2 promoted, 2 relegated, 2 dropped in from 1st section, 2 come up from 3rd section.
So where did...
c) provide a good quality recording of each band - can be compared to remarks and see/hear what went well/wrong
d) record and publish the adjudicators discussions - at least bands will know why 'x'...
