Keith Johnson, like his father before him, had strong links with the Besses o'th' Barn Band from the North West of England. He was introduced to bands at an early age on Euphonium, and after progressing through the ranks in Besses Boys Band, joined Besses o' th' Barn Band at the age of fifteen for four years before leaving for his studies at UMIST. After a brief time with the Middleton Band, he returned to Besses for six more years, but has now retired from full time playing. He has, however, made guest appearances as a player – most notably with Glossop Old Band at the British Open Contest, and with the Leyland Band at the North west Area Championship in 2005. In addition to his brass playing, Keith has had an active involvement with music technology – from playing and programming synthesisers to recording on four track recorders and beyond. Apart from his engineering work with KMJ Recordings, Keith has also worked on sessions for Classic FM on several occasions.
