Hebden Bridge Brass Band Heritage Concert June 15th 2013

The band performed to a large and appreciative audience, delivering a varied program which tested all sections of the band. From the first strains of Knight Templar it was obvious the band was going to deliver a great performance, and so it proved. The technical demands of The Marriage of Figaro were well met, and the band went on the give excellent renditions of Ticket to Ride, Lendalfoot and closed the first half with Laudate Dominum by Edward Gregson. In between these items, the Guest Soloist for the evening, Alan Hobbins delighted the audience with some beautifully controlled playing in Swedish Hymn and Nessun Dorma. He finished his first spot with Buglers Holiday, joined by Colleen Smail and Dom Wood.

The band began the second half with Strike up the Band, The Dambusters March (as a 70th Anniversary tribute) and a world premiere performance of The Lost Allemande, by Gareth Davis.

Alan Hobbins returned, this time on Soprano cornet, and began with the lovely duet Pie Jesu, with Kelly Hayes on Flugel. Alan then played a great arrangement of Vilja, penned by Andi Cook. Alan's final piece was Demelza, and by this time the audience were in no doubt they had heard a soloist of the highest quality.

There was a poignant moment for the band as its Solo Euphonium, Amy Smith, was joined by Ian Plant to play Softly as I leave you. This was Amy's last concert with the band before she departs to take up a new job in Dubai. Best Wishes Amy.

The band saved its best until last, as a sparkling performance of Fire in the Blood by Paul Lovatt Cooper came to an immense conclusion, which prompted a standing ovation among the audience and demands for an encore.

The concert was compered in fine style by Jason Smith, and during Alan's solo items were conducted by Les Smail.

I won’t mention names; it’s the principle that matters here, I think. Yesterday I attended a brass band concert. It was a Championship Section band. There were euphonium, flugelhorn and cornet solos. Each soloist was introduced by name, and the audience was invited to express its acclaim to each after the piece ended. Then, there was a fine xylophone solo. There was no introduction of the player and it was followed by...

... an uninvited round of applause for the band – and no mention of the soloist.

It has been said before that percussionists are, too often, regarded as somehow on the stage with the band but not of the band. Could this be another manifestation of the problem.

After 20 years, due to increased work commitments, Les Palmer has stepped down as manager of Reg Vardy Band. Les has led the band through thick and thin, and was at the helm during the band’s “golden period”, which included pre qualifying for the National Finals in 2005, competing at the World Championships in 2005, and most recently, winning the Grand Shield in 2011.
Les has given unstintingly of his time and effort during his time as band manager, and the band would like to express its heartfelt thanks for his sterling work.
The band now enters a new era, under the leadership of the recently appointed band manager Graeme Tindall. Graeme is aware that Les is a hard act to follow, and said,
“I would like to place on record the thanks of the Reg Vardy Band to Les for his hard work, stalwart support and loyalty as Band Manager when many others would and could have easily fallen by the wayside. I have total respect and I have big shoes to fill but will certainly do my best with the help and support of Les and a newly formed committee that have drive and passion to succeed. “
Les remains an active member of the committee, handling contest registration and logistics, however all correspondence regarding the band should now be directed to Graeme Tindall, Band Manager, on 07815 185935, or by email graemetindall@me.com
