Could you do me a big favour and pass the following message on to Peter Hough.

The Concerto for Eb Bass and Clash Cymbals is almost ready for its first performance!

He'll know what I mean.

Many Thanks

Hello Roger,
I've already done it!!
I saw your message on our Bands website and I told Peter weeks ago.
He had a good laugh about it.
I think he was going to get back to you. I will mention it again to him on Sunday.
Cheers,
Heather

I am right in thinking you conduct Wem?
If so, I expect you know Alan Collins?

Roger Thorne
29.11.2002, 23:25
Hi Heather,

Thanks for passing on my message.

Yes, I conduct Wem Jubilee (Based in North Shropshire for those who have never heard of us!).

I've been there for about 10 years now.

I've never heard of Alan Collins though.

The only Alan we have in the band is Alan Metcalfe (Solo Trombone).

Thanks once again

30.11.2002, 09:21
Hi again Roger,
Alan Collins is my husbands boss and lives in Wem.
He has been to many of your concerts and has started to take a great interest in your Band. From what he told us it sounded like he had got to know you all too! Must be my mistake!
He doesn't play an instrument though..sorry!!!

Roger Thorne
30.11.2002, 15:43
Hi Heather,

The mystery of Alan Collins is now solved!

I would probably recognise him by sight if he has attended our concerts but I certainly didn't recognise the name.

Have a chat to him and find out if he is coming to our Christmas Concert.
(21st December, Stanier Hall, Wem)

If so ask him to make himself known to me, I can then tell him what a wonderful employee your husband is . . . better still I can use him in a bit of audience participation

I don't play for a brass band now, but the last one I played with was Shirland Miners Welfare Band, but for many years played for Bestwood Welfare "Black Diamonds" Band. I now live in the Chonburi area of Thailand, and play with a Symphony Orchestra, International Big Band and a Brass Quintet. As well as a little teaching at an International School. 8)

I normally play for a band that phones up desperate at the last minute before the registration forms are due. Five Rivers at Mineworkers and Boldon Colliery at the Nationals.

Cannot play for Five Rivers this year cos they are in the same section as me. Therefore first band to offer a pint of John Smiths and a packet of Marmite crisps and I am theirs. 8)

Pride Valley Brass are favourites but the tight wads are only offering a half shandy. :x They think they can get me cheap cos our lass is secretary.

I also know Alan well having played under his direction several times - a talented MD and just brilliant cornetist. I saw Alan play in the Barbican with Grimey playing Sparkes - Harmony Music - what a fantastic performance that was - I also believe that was the year that unbelievably Grimey did not qualify. It's a strange world this banding world of ours eh!!

As to the 'How to help', well I think most people here would agree that by contributing on theMouthPiece.com you are adding value and offering experienced opinion on a host of banding matters. Yours are the opinions I setup theMouthPiece.com to hear, and we respect them.

I am sure there are many bands in your area who with your experience, would simply love to have you in their midst. I for one am glad that you are around here :D

Keep posting.... and a happy new year to you and your family...

Thanks MusicMan - an excellent site.

We are looking forward this year to our first ever year in the top section, we are realistic about our chances of major success! - however we are going to go for it.

We have had a couple of really key signings over the past year, on cornet that have proved to be absolutley invaluable and really strengthened the band.

Having said that our last couple of results in the first section were not great despite playing well - I guess that's contesting for you!

I play tenor horn with the Eastern Iowa Brass Band, in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, USA. (That's "Iowa" with the corn, not "Idaho" with the potatoes or "Ohio" and whatever they're famous for.) I'm here trying to find out more and join the larger community of brass banders around the world. It seems the most of the world doesn't know we exist in "the states." I'm not sure whether it's because we're relatively new small and silent or because the rest of the world prefers it that way. Thoughts? Comments? Sticky Icon needed?

I think it has more to do with a lack of information. We don't tend to hear too much of what goes on across the pond, perhaps you should persuade www.4barsRest.com to get an american correspondent.

I think most peoples idea of American Brass Bands are those marching bands that we see. Best of luck to you and you're band and if you're ever find yourself around Heathrow on a Wednesday or Friday night come along and have a blow (we're about 10mins from the airport).

YEP is still going but as a ten piece outfit - they are concentrating on concerts rather than contests and as a result have got some of the old players back that are now signed on with other bands. They have a good crowd there and are having quite a lot of fun, from what I can tell!

Tony W is joining us - I will pass on your greetings!

Just a thought - but does anyone think a new category called something like "User reviews" might be interesting :?: ? As long as the title of the post in that category clearly states what is being reviewed (Specific Instrument/Music/Recording/Mouthpiece/WWW Site ???!!! etc), I think this might work.

Opinions please.....? Some other interesting categories have been suggested recently & I don't really want to 'overdo' the number of categories on the front page - but if you like this particular idea & think it will add value, then I will add this one.

I'm with you on the 'overloading' - while it's good to sort stuff into their proper categories, it can easily distract the users imo if there are too many 'pidgeon holes'

However, having said that, a 'User Reviews' category might be useful! ;)

If you look at the map, youll see that the England/Scotlnad border is approximatley 50 miles north of most of Hadrian's Wall.

It is always funny watchng Americans jump from one side of the wall to the other shouting "England, Scotland, England, Scotland" when in fact they're still in deepest darkest Northumberland!!

Not seen much of an Oxfordshire presence on here yet, although Tim Hayton (TubaMan) has been noted... (Hi Tim! How's the beard?).

Current banding position: Bass Trom for "http://www.kidlingtonconcertbrass.org.uk"

There you are Dave (u need to use the buttons under the subject bar for adding links etc) Rachel

I also do Tenor/Alto/Contra Trom as desired, or indeed Euph, Bari, Tuba, or Piano - see me in sight-reading accompanying action at the Oxfordshire and District BBA Solos and Quartets on the 6th of April...

Taken as meant! MSN is empty, clunky, and deluges you with spam by passing on your email address to others. That was what deterred a lot of the Delphi posters/lurkers from joining it in the first place. It's odd how these things go round - before Delphi, Nigel Horne's mailing list was very active, and I'm told that before that started up, there was a general brass list run by a chap called Ted Zateslo which attracted much of the brass band traffic, although there are far more interested people online now than there were then.

Yes, Roger does conduct us. He rules over the band with an iron fist and few teeth!!!

Whilst on the subject of Roger, you REALLY need to change that little picky of you at the side of your posts mate. It just says CHEEZZYYYY. I have a better picture you could use mate, it was taken at a band social some time ago and was to the tune of 'You can leave your hat on' by Tom Jones.

If you want it mate, just let me know. If anyone else wants it, I'll start taking bids!!!!
