View Full Version : [FIXED] are there two ways to quote previous posts?
I noticed in some threads that the quotes from previous posts don't always look the same. Is there more then one way to do this?

You don't mean a quote within a quote?
No, I mean like in David's and John's posts in this thread for example: http://www.themouthpiece.com/vb/showthread.php?t=9480

Hmmm... this is a weird one. I have no idea why the quote function performs for you in this way.
I will add it to the list...;)
Yeah, does the same thing for me. I never noticed it in Version 3.03 but since I've gone over to default I've spotted it a few times. It does make the quotes quite difficult to distinguish from the rest of the post.

Can I ask those users who are experiencing these QUOTE issues to let me know what browsers you are using please... I have reported this to the software vendor and they have asked me to find this out.
HBB, BBCBari, Jan et al....
Thanks

(BTW, I had two different types of quotes)

How do you do a 'screen shot?'
TheMusicMan
23.09.2004, 23:14
This is usually done by using the key combination cntrl-alt-PrntScrn
This takes a copy of the current screen and puts it into your PC's temporary memory. You will then need to paste that into say a graphic app or even MS Word, by opening a new document and pressing ctrl-v then save that Word file to a location on your PC - say My Documents - and then start a reply to this thread and use the attach tool to add it to the reply here.
If the file is too big (i.e. greater than 50K) , you can send it to me via email -> john@themouthpiece.com and I will post it for you.

Not working : (
I'll have to take a good old fashioned digital picture tomorrow (it is past my bedtime on a school night) and get back to you tomorrow.

Can I ask a stupid question here folks.... you are actually pressing the QUOTE button are you and not just copying the text...?:-?:-?
Sorry... had to ask....
E-mail with screenshots is on its way....
I use Mozilla 1.0 Preview Release and to quote, I normally use the "quote"-button (I don't use the quick-reply button when I want to quote)
I'm using IE 6 as well...

For some reason, some of the quotes are not picking up the inverted commas around the person's name: ie instead of [quote="peterbale"] you get [quote=peterbale] which, although it shows the name of the original poster, does not close off the post properly, making it hard to tell when the quote finishes and the new post begins. You do, of course, need to ensure the final {/quote} (bracket changed for demonstration purposes) appears at the end of the quoted passage.
It can be easily corrected by using the "Edit" button and inserting the speech marks acordingly, if that makes things clearer, although it is a pain to have to do.

As I showed in the screenshots that I sent you, there are also two types of quotes in the tMP theme. The first type is more fancy, with graphical quotation marks in the headers, and the second type is more simple, similar to the way it is in the "Default" theme.
I think the first type of quotes are from people that use the tMP theme, and the second type from people that use the Default theme....
just some testing here....
this is a quote using the tMP theme (standard=without quotation marks around username)
just typing text, and then applying the "quote" button (tMP theme)
same as the first one, but with quotation marks around my username (manually added in the editor)
all the quotes look the same to me when use the tMP theme...
after switching to the Default theme, they all look bad (no blue box around the quotes)
but after editing this post in the Default theme, all three quotes suddenky look OK????
Now I switcehd back to the tMP theme, and the quotes still look like they were in the Default theme (so with the blue box, not with the fancy quotation mark graphics)
After editing the post in the tMP theme, the quotes are again like they were in the beginning (with the fancy quotation mark graphics)
conclusion: some VERY strange things going on here... As a tMP-theme user it doesn't really bother me, but for the default-theme user, I can imagine that it is quite annoying to have the unclear quotes (without the blue box), which only seems to happen when a quote is made with the tMP theme, but viewed in the default theme.

Having switched from my usual "Default Style" to "tMP 3.03" I see what you mean. In the latter the quotes come out correctly, but not in "Default". Over to the technos I think ;)
just some testing here.... one more test by using the "quick reply" option with the "quote message in reply" button checked
similar results...

Moy - I am intrigued as to what is causing this issue. I have sent a support ticket to vBulletin who are looking into it for me.
All I did to the post above (as Jan_h) correctly says, was to add the " to either side of the person who you are quoting. Doing this makes it work... weird eh

Now that is spooky!...
The first time I looked at Moys post, the quote she did looked like Jan's does just above hers... but when I looked for the 2nd time after John's post ^; Moys looks like it does now
Now, I know it's getting late, I've had a couple of pints, I'm blonde, female and a drummer.... but I know what I saw!!
mmm, and if you scroll down when you're replying to a thread, the quotes look the same...
Either way, it doesnt bother me too much.... it's quoted, it's clear.... all happy :)  ;)

Hey John that's weird............when I left the post the " quote " marks were there and now they have gone.
The "quotes" are defo on this as well....................well at the moment.

No, they are not on there Moy. The quotes need to be around the name of the person you are quoting.
If you edit your post, you should see no quotes around my name... if you add them, then the quote box will display correctly.
This should be done automatically, I am still not sure why this isn't working properly.
Hey no prob we all know what it means anyway......................I am not bothered.:)

I have now had a reply from vBulletin technical support about this.
They are very helpful, but in this case have asked me to do a few things I am not too sure about. It might be that we have to live with this for a little while longer sorry...:(
Further testing ensues....:)

... and at long last, after speaking to the original developer of the tMP303 style, he managed to sort it for me so that all the quote functions work in each of the styles...:tup
Hopefully we can now consider this matter closed.

Hello there!
I've noticed that some people seem to be able to partially quote from previous posts whereas I only seem to be able to quote the entire post!
Is there a way to just quote the relevant part of the post in question without having to show the whole lot?
Advice would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Simon (Rupert)

You mean like this...?
I do believe you need to type or copy/paste the additional text...:tup
if you use the "quote"button in a post, you can edit the text you want to quote as much as you want. (this does not work when you use the "quick reply" button instead of the "quote" button)
As John says, you can also copy-paste the txt that you want to quote into an empty message, and then "wrap"this text in quote-tags. This is done by selecting the text and pressing the litlle icon with the yellow text balloon

Once you've clicked on the "Quote" button and have the text displayed, you can then highlight and delete any sections that you do not want to show. Alternatively, if you want the whole text to show, but to draw attention to a particular section, you can mark it as "bold" etc.
Winner!
Cheers Chaps!
