Ex member of NYYBGB. Made great friends and really enjoyed working under some great conductors: Major Peter Parkes, Elgar Howarth, David King, James Watson and or course Dr Newsome.
I'm sure many other people will agree with me that it is a really worthwhile experience being in the band and I would strongly advise young players to audition as it has helped me and many others go "further up" the banding ladder and meet people from all over the country. Long may it continue.

NYBB vs NYBBW ...hmmm...think thats a tough call. When I was in both I was impressed by loads of players in each, a few playing for both, i.e David Childs and the ever impressive Mr Pippen God bless his cotton socks!! lol... Got to play loads of great music and the anniversary concert with the NYBBW was fantastic...especially the 1812 with old and new members, wow, showin my age there. Although playing with NYBB at the barbican and Kenwood bowl with NYBB was an excellent experience, not to mention going to the States as well. I have to say that my life would not be the way it is if I hadn't been introduced to the Green monster drink by Mr Chris Turner, nor will I get the image of Mr Turner doing his drinking routine with the music from the Guiness advert!!
Ah those were the days, wont mention one night when Mr Pippen was rather ill!!
Richard
NYBB, many years ago....remember great concerts with bram tovey, richard evans, howard snell at the helm...sadly due to amout of beer consumed both on the courses and in the following years, dont remember much else! (although there were some very dodgy ballerinas....)

I remember the night Mr Pippen was very ill and the trek to the pub in Denbigh where we saw Mr Turner downing his Green Monsters to the Guiness Advert. A very entertaining party trick. People were trying to do that for years after but it was not the same!

the ever impressive Mr Pippen
It surprised me that he was as low as top 2nd (i.e. 4th down) in the Troms when I was in the NYBB; he seemed a very sound player. Isn't he a pro now?
Perhaps he was thought too young to lead the section. He certainly had the technical ability to do it, not to mention the musical exhibitionism - I remember doing Dances and Arias, where there's a whole section pedal F#, marked 'mfp', if I remember correctly. John Maines made each member of the section do it one after the other in rehearsal; the Basses were fine of course, but none of the Tenors could do it, apart from Mr Pippen, who disregarded the dynamic, and blatted it, fff all through with bell pointing out, every time. I was a bit annoyed at the time, but it would have been pointlessly inaudible without it, so perhaps it was the right thing to do...

I was on the NYBBW last year. It was being a good laugh despite being twenty and having to be in bed at about 10:30 (I think) and then having a row off the house staff even if you left your room to go in the toilet.
Got on the course this year but can't afford to pay £220 to represent my country!!!

It is true to say that around 3 years ago the NYBBW was the best youth band in the world, without question. People who had attended the British Youth Band , the scotish youth band and even the Danish Youth band (lol had to get that one in) had said the welsh band was no comparison, and with statements from both Jim Watson AND Elgar Howarth, Im not goin to argue lol
I dont know what the worlds coming to when Fron mouthpieces are used on the tenor horn.... wrong wrong wrong!!!!!

I remember the night Mr Pippen was very ill and the trek to the pub in Denbigh where we saw Mr Turner downing his Green Monsters to the Guiness Advert. A very entertaining party trick. People were trying to do that for years after but it was not the same!
Mmmmm Mr Pippen was in a right mess that night , also was a young Mr Gavin Saynor , who as I remember rightly suffered from some illness which resulted in some " Projectile Vomiting " in the Black Bull Pub in Denbigh..which narrowly avoided myself and James Gourley , picture the scene...Gav stumbling out of the pub.."RAGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" all over the glass tiles in the pub...a shocked Mr Gourley " are you ok gavin ? was it something you ate"...
cue Gav " yes Mr Gourley 14 pints of stella and a blue bols cocktail" amazing......
NYBBW great times and players...
Ronnie the Lizard - brilliant playing Ladaute Dominum , of Men and Mountains and Coventry Variations spring to mind ( there are loads more )
Glyn Williams - 2nd Movement Festival Music Llandaff Catherdral.......Magic
Gav Saynor - Matto Grosso - James Gourley brilliant
My Brother Mike - Tournament for Brass , Rhapsody in Brass
Loads of great memories both socially and playing...
playing with NYBB at the barbican and Kenwood bowl with NYBB was an excellent experience, not to mention going to the States as well.

Now then Mr Jones, me old long suffering room mate...hows tricks. You getting nostalgic in your old age?
Great thread, makes you wonder what story's will come out that have been buried for years...
As for for both NYBB's mentioned. Long may then continue and of course not forgetting the NYBBS...bound to be a few jocks out there wanting in on the action...(always is ;) )

Definately NYBBW!
I was on Jim's courses for anyone that knows me. Its mad cos I work for them now. Have had to go on courses as house staff-arghhhh............... it's not very nice being on the other side of the fence because I know what goes on.
Those courses we a right laugh though weren't they, all memories now.

and of course not forgetting the NYBBS...bound to be a few jocks out there wanting in on the action...(always is ;) )Exactly, what, no space left to vote for NYBBS on poll?!! ;)
Attended NYBBS courses from 1990-2000, on EEb and BBb Bass, (at one point with 8 or 9 EEbs and just little old me on BBb for 2 years, could nearly balence them up tho!) met some great people, learned how to drink loads & loads of vodka, climbed a few flag poles, had a hoora laugh, oh & played some cracking music!! Those were the days!
For the last 6 years, ive been trying to persuade Neil Cross that im still only 20, and just want to do 1 more course...!
What about somebody organising a CLUB 18-30 NYBBS/NYBBW/NYBBGB course!! now that would be good fun....

Well, my friends you do make me feel an old F***.
I did 14 courses with NYBBGB, 6 on principal cornet.
I tutored the cornets of both NYBBGB and NYBBW for ten years, and have very fond memories of both.
I would thoroughly recommend to all young players to apply to join; it's where you can get inspired. My inspiration was a young Maurice Murphy, I just couldn't believe what he did with the instrument was possible, which encouraged me to have a reasonable career in music and a wonderful life, many thanks Maurice.

I really wished I'd applied earlier.. I only get 4 courses :(

I have very fond memories of my time in the NYBBW.
Bets course was under Howard Snell but the best tutors were by far David James and Jim Shepherd.
Remember having my thumb burned by a fag dimp off Mr Resurgam because i used to have my left thumb sticking out over the bell pipe. I never did it again so use that tip kids!
God so many times we were nicked by tutors for staying out, having one or two many social shandies or going out for curries in the middle of nowhere. Mind you we still got up at the 7am for brekkie and played like a top band!
Brilliant times and fantastic character building!

NYBBW Through and Through - top band at the time - so many players have gone on to greater things. There are too many to name.
My first course was 2nd Horn at the age of 16 playing under James Watson (scary bloke) in 1989 I think - Seascapes - Cardiff and remember playing Epic Symphony (First Movement) in Ammanford ????
My Second course with Edward Gregson - involved a great trip to Norway and spent my 18th birthday with some good friends - expensive though.
My Third and final Course - Bangor with Bram Tovey playing Coventry Variations - How loud did we play the National Anthem at the end of the night !!!!!!!
It's great to read some of the previous posts
Ronnie - Bearded bloke who could circular breath for ages - r u a vet now ?????
WelshMike - haven't seen you for years mate. Hope everything is fine
NYBB all the way!!! 5 courses down, 3 to go-it never gets dull. everyone should apply, it's ace. obviously i couldn't possibly say what really goes on...

Ex-NYBBGB and on the course that I made principal, I unfortunately joined an elite group of few that I hope the present members avoid. Demoted and uninvited.
My old dear brought round a car-load of certificates and trophies from my youth the other day and I found the letter that was sent to my parents.....really brought the memories back.
Often read the backs of course photos. They're like a mnemonic link to everything that happened on the course and the people there, such a window to the past is priceless.
Hope everyone is keeping well.

oh Al I remember that awful night and the even worse morning after, bless you!
So many memories, especially the one where we walked to the furthest pub in the town to make sure no one caught us, only to down one drink and rush back in time for lights out! Oh the fun... haha!
Lots of Love,
Lou

Thats good Lou, because I surprisingly remember very little.
At least we both took something positive from that course!

NYBBW in 1987 with Edward Gregson.
What an experience that was.... We played Contest Music and some squeeky gate thing....great stuff
Only got to do the one course though because I joined the army the following year :(
I've still got the video of the TV programme we recorded. The squeaky gate piece was 'Refrains & Cadenzas' by Thomas Wilson.
The video is great; a very babyish Ian Roberts is on third cornet. Adrian Morton had dark hair, Adrian Evans had hair (a beautiful mullet!).
Ahh... memories!

Me too - along with the last 5 minutes of the programme that preceded it - a rather interesting one about a man who .....errrr.........collects combs.
I guess youre right about R&Cs - Chromascope must have been a year or two later.

Had the privilige to play on the NYBBW under Mr Snell (1996). I still remember the floor of Blackwood Minor's Institue shaking from the power of the basses during Pines of Rome. A truly memorable experience.

Nick, its Andy Baker here. Top idea about a fundraising band - I'll happily come along and split a few on 3rd cornet. I played in the 91 and 92 bands including the 10th anniversary concert. I seem to remember about 7 of us sneaking out in Ronnie's car for a curry in Cardiff after closing time - am I right in thinking that you and Mike were there?
By the way I've got the 92 concert recording on tape - if you send me a pm with your address I'll lend it to you.

HI Andy
Along time since I last saw you at the Midlands' contest when you were at Nottingham City transport.
How are you doing?
Do you have a FULL recording of the 1992 NYBBW concert inc Men and Mountains? I've got the official one/ Just wondered!!
Natalie ( ex Rhos / NYBBW Baritone player in case you wondered!!!)
PS Yes I'd be up for a reunion of the NYBBW. Some great times and memories there from 1991 and 1992. God it seems such a long time ago!!!

Hi Natalie
Yes, it's a scarily long time, I'm starting to feel oooold  .
How are you doing?
Oh you know, wife, kids, ridiculous mortgage, estate car, impending mid-life crisis, blah, blah...;) - enjoying it really, though. You?

No, unfortunately I've only got the official one. I would love to hear Of Men and Mountains again but it would seem that Amadeus Recordings (part of Doyen) have lost the master tapes so not much hope unless anyone's got a bootleg. Not that we condone that sort of thing, obviously. Didn't Gregson write an organ part for the big razz at the end? Or did I imagine that?
Wasn't it you I nearly killed driving back from Cardiff one year nodding off at the wheel? Sorry about that, If only they'd invented Red Bull back in our day.

I didn't think they ever made an "official" recording of the concert. I'd be interested in a copy if there's one spare!!
Oh Hi Nat!!!! Remember me?

I didn't think they made an "official" recording of that concert. Was it the course one or the anniversary reunion concert?
