View Full Version : Announcement: TEST THE NATION 2003
Roger Thorne

To all Mouthpiece Members,
I have contacted the BBC regarding their programme 'TEST THE NATION'. They are extremely interested in receiving applications from theMouthpiece.com members to make up a team of 50 musicians. (They currently have 15).
We have got to act very quickly with this to make sure we get our members on the show. So it will be a FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED selection.
If you are interested in taking part then please send me an e-mail (not a private message) and I will send you the relevant application form.
The show is being broadcast live on the evening of Sunday, May 4th
The studio is based in Wembley, London.
Groups are being called for 15:30 – 16:00 hours for registration, briefings and supper.
They offer to cover all travel expenses (and accommodation for the Sunday night if applicable - remember Monday 5th is a Bank Holiday).
So if you wish to represent the Brass Band Movement via theMouthpiece.com send me an e-mail:

Maybe they would if you and Singapore Northern Lass could share a taxi!

Two Points..I wouldn't mind sharing a taxi with the young lady from Singapore, but have you seen the water taxi's in Thailand. They'd never let us up the Thames.. and secondly you get very wet..but in S.E.Asia it's hot so not a problem...unlike London

MR Mute. Prague has affected you in too serious a way.
D'ya have to be 18? I couldn't do it anyway, I'm gonna be Anna carrying the Banner, at a guide AGM.
I can't make it either - our second baby is due a few weeks later - a bit too close (or should that be too far!!!???) for comfort.
Best of luck anyway - I'll be watching.
Hope it's a good'n Dyl! :D And as cute as me (!) not[/deliberate joke!]
Our band was asked to do it, although that was 3 days before, a bit too close our our liking! :D the relationship thang!

Thanks for the message Elin. These people are very keen to get Mouthpiece members on the show.
But we only have a limited amount of time to get our applications in.
So what better place to have the first official Mouthpiece gathering than on Live Television.
We've had 345 views to the topic but I have only received 12 (TWELVE) e-mails asking for applications forms.
I'm sure we can do better than that.
Don't be shy - send your reply

Absolutely - But how much notice do you need?
I appreciate that not everyone can go because of other committments, but 12 out of 500 in my opinion isn't short notice, its apathy.
This this is a golden opportunity to promote the Brass Band Movement and The Mouthpiece.com on National Live Television. (Incidentally the last programme shown was watched by over 10 million viewers)
We don't get chances like this everyday so again I would urge all you Bandsman/women who are not committed on the 4th May to apply for an application form.
There's still time to enter - so hurry.
Heather, of course i fancy it!!!!!!!!!
I've e-mailed Roger about this test the nation thingy too (whatever that is).

well, for such a large group of people, a few months is needed, not to mention the fact that people will register and then lose interest etc. I reckon there must only be about 100 people that check the site regularly.

I spent most of yesterday sending personal e-mails to the majority of people on this site who have not yet posted a message, to remind them that we still exist and to inform them about the BBC TV programme.
Hopefully they will respond soon.

yes, unfortunately, there are only 270 people that have actually posted a message, so how many people of the 270 don't check etc.? it's still lame though.
if we were going to arrange a summer thing for august, we'd have to do it now, or maybe next spring. gives us a year, and maybe we can work around holidays?

I can't speak for all of those who have not responded, but I should imagine many of us have diaries which are very full. For me, with my SA commitments, Sundays can be difficult anyway, but having checked my diary, after this weekend the next free weekend I have is the 21/22 June, and the one after that is 2/3 August so, as Neil says, some of us do need a little bit of notice!

the fact it's in london means at least 6 hours travelling for me too. the same for anyone in the north east or west, but slightly less for yorkshire. it's quite annoying, but please 'those that can, do.' there may be some cheapish train tickets from manchester, ~£20. try http://www.thetrainline.com

Neil / Peter: Just to point out that it's the BBC/Talent TV who have made the request for 'Musicians' - Roger was astute and 'marketing opportunity aware' enough to find out what was on offer from BBC and post the details here. I appreciate this is short notice, but if we don't ask - we'll never know eh! :D Thanks for checking your diaries though, shame you're not available
All:
I know we're a fairly large group of people, but +500 in just coming up to 5 months is a great start!. How many times have you been asked to do a job for a fete, or charity event, or concert - or been asked to 'dep' when someone is ill etc... at the last minute. It seems to me that we bandspeople are used to this type of last minute request.
I agree with what Roger has said. This is simply a fantastic opportunity to promote banding in general, and selfishly from my perspective of course, theMouthPiece.com
Free transport
Free accommodation
Live TV
Potential audience of 10 Million
(and I've already asked for a plug for tMP by Philip 'n Anne  )It's an opportunity for me that I simply couldn't refuse...
They are really very interested in getting as many tMP members on air as possible. I appreciate it's short notice, but if anyone can make it and is yet to respond - please email Roger for an application form and send it off as soon as possible.
Thanks for your support ...

fair point about the notice and rog etc., but maybe it's a point to think of in the future, and any meeting tMP makes  .
the 6 hours was there and back! takes at least 3 hours to london at the moment, it took me something stupid like 4 hours the other day.

There seems to be quite a bit of negativity towards this test the nation thingy from certain people which I think is a shame. :(
If you can't go, then fine. But don't put a dampener on those who are going or who want to go. I for one will be filling in my application tonight (if I can find a piccy) 8) !!
This is an ideal opportunity to get tmp known and to advertise the brass banding movement in general. It's an opportunity that we shouldn't allow to pass.

to bagpuss, just reread the whole thread, and can't find any negativity towards the thing! a few of us said we couldn't make it, and in particular i said that maybe we could bear in mind notice and location for the future. As theMusicMan said, this wasn't something we had any say in, and thankyou to roger for giving anyone who hadn't heard about it the chance to go on telly!
to keppler, there's a thing in london called 'test the nation' or something, and roger gave everyone on here the opportunity to attend, well everyone above a certain age at least. a few of us mentioned we had prior engagements either on that day, or in my case the following week, that hindered us from attending (whitehaven contest, and band is on a sunday for me, and i only get back to uni for rehearsals 2 weeks before the contest). i then suggested that if we ever arranged a tMP band, then notice would have to be takem into acount. I also mentioned the location: 4 hours there, and 4 hours back from the north west at the moment, i also pointed out that you can get cheap tickets from virgin trains to london from manchester if they are booked early enough.
For some reason these comments were taken as 'negative', when the intent was to reason why i couldn't go, learn for the future when we may have a say, and help people.

Not wishing to be a pain in the backside, but these constant posts about being negative or not are not helping my quest to encourage Mouthpiece.com members to apply for applications forms.
Can I suggest that we drop these posts and return to encouraging our members to apply.
If anyone is a member of a band that is free on 4th May, could they please spread the word, get them to join the Mouthpiece and then apply to go on the show.
Much appreciated

Well Done Nigel,
I've just spoken to her too. Three more Mouthpiece members have been accepted aswell.
They are still short of about 20 people to make up the team.
15 members have unfortunately just pulled out, so with one big last effort we could make it all Mouthpiece.com members.
If you are free on the 4th/5th May please send for an application form or telephone Kirsty Gaskell-Sinclair on 0207659 2785 to register your interest. (You'll still have to send in your forms though) Closing date for receiving application forms is Friday 18th April.

Hello All,
I'm a newly founded memeber of tmp but I'm attending TEST THE NATION and am extremely looking forward to it. For those of you that are undecided, allow me to point out the benefits. Firstly it is taking place on a bank holiday weekend so for the majority of people it doesn't interfere with any work committments. Secondly the BBC will reimburse all expenses and from previous experience this is usually in cash prior to filming. For those of you that have always wanted to be on TV - this is your chance to get your 15 minutes of fame! Those that are passionate about brass banding can be there to represent what excellent intellect we elite lot have! It's a great opportunity to meet up with fellow musicians and who knows what could come of it, many joint concerts etc. It's excellent publicity for the brass banding movement, all of whaich can only have positive effects. Lastly for those of you that are a little concerned about achieveing a low IQ, do not worry it is all in the name of fun and it's a team effort so no soloists required in this venture!
It will be great to see you there, so get applying and quick![/b]

Hi Everyone,
I've had an influx of requests for application forms over the last 48 hours - thank you all for your support - but you must get them filled in and sent off before the end of this week.
Just to keep you informed we have 12 members accepted onto the show as at 4.00 p.m. today.
But they are still looking for more volunteers.

Hi Folks, I getting lots of e-mails asking what Test the Nation is all about - heres a bit of literature supplied by the Beeb that might explain a little bit about the programme . . .
TEST THE NATION – “THE NATIONAL IQ TEST 2003”
Following on from the hugely successful “National 2002 Test”, the BBC1 programme "Test the Nation" is back…
THE TIME IS NOW . . .
. . . whether you missed it first time around, had one glass too many or were simply too scared to try, we’re offering you a second chance to discover your IQ.
Once again Anne Robinson  and Phillip Schofield  will host this completely interactive programme, which promises to be an enlightening and entertaining evening packed full of fun, celebrities and surprises. (and Mouthpiece.com members - I added that bit!)
The 300 strong, studio audience play an integral part in the programme. They are split into six groups of 50 people, by occupation, hobby or other characteristic and will complete the multiple-choice test.
With viewers also playing along at home "Test the Nation: The National IQ Test - 2003", will hopefully take its place alongside the original IQ Test as one of the biggest live television events of the year. Once again proving to be an interesting and stimulating night for the entire nation.
Whether you were conquered by colleagues, beaten by your brother or simply searching for self improvement there are plenty of reasons to give it another try.

Just to be extremely boring and shed some light as to the relevence of your birth weight Elin. There are many existing theories and continued research into birth weight being linked to an individuals IQ, so by discovering your birth weight they will be able to corrolate this to your IQ. Oh, the joys of doing a psychology degree! I'm suprised they haven't asked if people were breastfed as that is a huge area of research, as that's supposedly linked to IQ. The longer a child is fed exclusively on breastmilk, the higher their IQ (so present research suggests). In that case my two children should both be a genuis!
Oh and as for the Buttermarket thing Rog, is all a case of trust. If you trust Becky then you should let her go, knowing that she'll respect your decision to allow her to go and will not take advantage. Loads of theories related to this area too but won't bore you any longer!
I must admit I don't remember ever having a record of how much I weighed at birth! (I just picked the middle range so as to answer the question on the form!).
Likewise, I've got no memories of how I was fed :) (though I do remember there being a glass(!) bottle in the cupboard when I was a kid).
I'm surprised they didn't ask how old our parents were - because that could have an effect too...
Neil.

Has everyone got their itineraries/tickets etc. yet? After Kirsty phoned to "book" me she said they'd send all the info last week. I know Easter will have got in the way, but I'm still waiting!
Sud.
Hiya Nigel,
My train tickets came Tuesday and I got the itinery on Wednesday. I'll bring it to band tonight so you can have a look.

Hi Nigel,
I have talked to Kirsty today and all the information packs have now been sent out to our members.
We currently have 16 members on the show.
She still wants more Mouthpiece.com members to apply.
So once again if you are free on 4th/5th May send me an e-mail and I'll return an application form.

I would really have enjoyed this but our can band only get jobs on bank holiday weekends cos all the other bands turn them down.
Everyone enjoy themselves and make sure there is free beer in the hotels, its par for the course for tele producers :D

Originally decided to stay in leeds and be very studious, then realised that i wanted to come and play, but there were no places left :( .But I have decided to go to London anyway, stay with my big sister and we're going to sit in a pub watching and being proud sisters of El and the rest of you! ...then maybe we'll meet you for a lemonade!
