Hi Guys - just in case anyone is interested, Aunt Bessies East Yorkshire Brass ceased to exist last night after the sponsorship was withdrawn by there parent company Tryton Foods - no reason was given for the withdrawl. The band will continue to function under its previous name of East Yorkshire Brass and will fund itself until such a time (if it comes) that further sponsorship is secured.

At least i aint a puddin no more... i am an EX PUDDIN!!!!!!!

Cheers

Sorry about your loss of sponsorship. Just a quick message to wish you good luck without it. After relying on sponsors for so long, we at leyland have been without for about 3 years now (I think) and are still going strong. Like I said, good luck and keep on bandin'!

Dave

Sorry to hear your news but I'm sure that you will feel much more comfortable under your new/old name.

I shall stop buying Aunt Bessies products with immediate effect and suggest that others do the same!

But the important thing is that the band continues, unlike so many that throw in the towel when the money disappears. All power to EYB.

Of course there is - who do you think has to make the puddings?

Seriously, though, sorry to hear of the loss of sponsorship, and hope things turn out alright in due course.

good luck with keeping the band afloat, I'll avoid Aunt bessie's enemy puddings from this day forth!!! (sorry to all yorkie bars, but I'm a lancashire lass and have always affectionatley known yorkshire puddings as this!!! You know I'm only messing not penkin!!!)

That's the trouble with sponsorship....when you lose your sponsor or leave a band your diet changes!!!!!

I now avoid a certain bakery chain and now I'll have to make me own puddings.....

Hope you find a sensibly-named sponsor soon!

I'm not too good at making my own Yorkshire Puds as they always stick to the tin but no more Aunt Bessies for me either!

Best of luck to your band.
I'm sure you'll survive without the sponsorship. In some ways losing it makes your band stronger.
Maybe something else is on the horizon. All the best.

At least you have had the sense to drop your sponsors name. I can never understand why some bands continue 'wearing' ex-sponsors names for years after they have stopped receiving the benefits of sponsorship. Why give free advertising?

Aidan

we've never had a proper sponsorship so have never had anything to lose really... :D so there are good points to being un-sponsored ;)
at least no-one has an excuse for gettin us and EYB mixed up now! There's still Besses Boys to get rid of though... hmm... They will all fall in the end.. mwhahahhahaha

Am I mistaken in thinking Besses were sponsored by JW Lees Aidan? Before your time I realise, but I'm sure they have had sponsorship. Even if it was rubbish.

Comedy moment though...

Before Aunt Bessies, we were sponsored by Lada Cars... (although never used there name with the band title...

Aidan, having your beer paid for is a huge sponsorship for a band!!!!

Aidan
21.03.2003, 12:16
haha.. Lada Brass... quality :D

trouble was.. no-one like JW Lees bitter ;) and it was only discounted anyway.. still had to buy it.. i think Ron ended up giving a load away cos no-one would drink it!

JW Lees is awful, all of it, think the only reason they survive is the stranglehold they have over pubs in my parents area... :( not good when you are a real ale drinker like my family all are! Did you have to use their stuff at your gigs then? oh dear!
We have had some brilliant support from the Federation Breweries in Dunston...and their beer is quite tasty!!!!

Aidan

we did have special Jw Lees Besses banners for the stands but thats about it... Apart from selling their booze in the bandroom.
Luckily now though, we manage to get cheap stella, carlsberg, carling and worthingtons to keep everyone happy.. along with all the usual spirits :D

Sorry to hear about the upheaval Dave. I'm sure everything will continue as is, and you won't have to play any of those awful sponsors events will you? I've played for two sponsored bands in my time and they were the only two who didn't offer expenses---you had to beg for them!! Even had to buy my own uniform for one of them! Are you still needing cornets? Wouldn't mind a blow sometime if you are; I live up the road in Malton.

Sponsors events aint all bad.... the free beer tent after beverley races is always a highlight of the year...

Suppose at the end of the day, losing a sponsor just means the band has to work harder (or perhaps work as hard as they did before the sponsor turned up)

Driffield Silver are unsponsored and i have to conduct em at a gig on friday night - 500 invited mayors and important people... Our chairman thought it would be a good idea to do a programs of "show" pieces - the organiser asked "can you play a buddy holly selection" to which i nearly replied "no" - our chairman beat me to it and said "how much is it worth"...

Buddy Holly selection is finishing the first half... £100 going to the charity we are playing for. - idea snow balled and we are raising money for the band through similar "choose the program" events....

Anyone used that sort of thing for band funds???

Having just read through this thread, I would like to state that the facts behind the loss of Sponsorship from Aunt Bessies for the East Yorkshire Brass Band are different from those quoted. Tryton Foods did finally end the Sponsorship but were very generous in providing further funding to rebadge, purchase new banners and pay for lots of other items to smooth out the transitional period from March to September.
2003. Not all Members jumped ship, some stayed with the band which is alive and well playing as East Riding of Yorkshire Band.

Jumped Ship!!

From my understanding of it all, some people diverted the ship, made it dock, and then lowered the b*****y gang plank before getting off. Only problem was they were drilling holes in the hull as it went along. Next time you get an uppity drummer, just drown the ******!!

We used to be sponsored by J W lees, they let us rehearse in an old club, till they demolished it. Oh and they gave us a load of ties. Now we pay a kings ransome to rent a church hall. So It can be done without sponsorship, so chinup and keep on going, loads of bands are going strong these days without sponsorship!
Although I do miss the engagements at the brewery somewhat........

OK, the fallout when bands lose sponsorship deals is always an emotive issue so we'll all do well to leave personal references out of this thread. Comments on the issue at hand are fine, but personal ones not fine - you can take those elsewhere.

End.

Just a comment from me wrt the Besses / Lees time.

The details of this particular association are quite complex, and I'm not going into detail in a public forum. The agreement was made in my period of absence from Band, and before I was appointed as one of the Directors of Besses o' th' Barn Band Limited.

My comment is just to reinforce that you make sure your understanding of the financial consequences of the deal is secure. Some potential partners will look attractive in terms of giving you up front cash, but the terms of the agreement if scrutinised closely may turn out to be that the 'sponsorship' is effectively a loan which could be secured on your Band's equipment or premises and may even involve some individual liability.
