A little poll for you.....(If i've done it right!)
Please don't think I'm being awful but I've put 'no'.
The only reason being my band already has a version of 'Over the Rainbow' .
I have Eva Cassidys CD and 'Over the Rainbow' doesn't really sound any different to any other version of the song.
She is however and fantastic singer but 'Fields Of Gold' to me would be a better choice.
Good Luck anyway.

Heather,
Fields of Gold is a great song, but since it's a commision, I don't really have the choice.
However, to be honest, Eva Cassidy's version is completly differant from every other rendition of it.......Perhaps I may do Fields of Gold, but since this will be an arrangement of an arrangement (like Over the Rainbow), I don't think I want to go through the Copyright palava again, but u never know!
Cheers for ur honesty, Heather!
If you do a solo with piano version (using those chords & melodic changes as on the CD) I'll buy it !

Well I said yes, I think that it's a lovely piece, and nothing like the original (some may say worse not me I may add!).
the piano accomp. with solo sounds ace, that'd be cool, I'd definately buy it :D
Ben ;)
Will it be a full band arrangement or a solo? If a solo, for which instrument?

The arrangement is for a Cornet Solo with Brass Band acomp.

Thanks for reminding me of that song. I've just played it to remind myself how good it is - streets ahead of the original.
I must agree it will make a terrific piece and will be a sure fire winner with almost any audience. Just ensure you make a good job of it - its too nice a song to spoil.

Isn't Ray Farr's arrangement for flugel (as on YBS's cd The Big Picture) based on the Eva Cassidy version? I know that Sonar brass have played a quintet version of it as well.
Why does it have to be for cornet????? What's wrong with horn??

It's a commission, which leaves me no choice. It's Ideal as a Soprano solo and much less ideal for Horn. The original was fine on horn, but with Eva Cassidy's version, it's in an odd(ish) key and the guitar is Capo'd to make it even worse. The horns and baritones team up to provide the arpeggio comp, which cannot be written as it sound in the recording as a ny composer and arranger will testify, arranging music that is written for guitar is exactly that of the piano, it simply cannot be transcribed as is, it would sound drastic as hell.
But, to make all cinfucions clear, this is a commission and I cannot change that, but it really does sound lovely on the Cornet!
I too have just listened through the album, Iam completely captivated by Eva. Not just the voice but the way she lends herself to phrasing and so on. I voted YES, and would definately like to play the final arrangment. I imagine that the finished article will sound very impressive.
Best of Luck

Thanks for the support, Blondie!!!! I have tested the first half of the arrangement with Tullis Russell Mills Band and it sound quite delicious indeed, quite gorgeous actually. But the cornet soloist who is commisioning the work from me is asking me to change the key which I don't blame him! However this causes a problem with the accompaniment.....***** typical! :)
You wanna blow my what?

Not on cornet.....no.

Some of you are really against the Cornet, aren't you
Me Too!!! Trumpet is way way better....hehe
But honestly, it sound beautiful on Cornet.......When I've finished and obtained Copyright Approval, you can buy and listen for yourself

Ahh, yer a Flugel Player!, just as moany as horn anyway! hehe
You wanna blow my what?

Hehe no right first time, I'm a horn player. it's just the flugel is more suited for female voice songs.
agreed.. that song would sound better on a flugel.. cornet is much too bright.
The original was fine on horn, but with Eva Cassidy's version, it's in an odd(ish) key
you dont have to do it in the same key do you?!? ;) ;)

any of the horn family would get 'lost' in the ensemble in my arrangement. the horns and baritones team up to build the arrpegio accompaniment. Adding flugel or a horn to that, the soloist will come off bland since the tone colours are the same. It would be like putting the arrpegios on the cornets while haveing the melody of the cornets.
I cant change the arrpegios to any other instruments, they have to stayt on horn and baritone for colouristic and technical reasons.
I have been asked to change the key, which is in Ab, a lovely Brass Band key, very warm......But the soloist part is too high, taking it down the octave is impossile, it will clash with the arrps and be too low, using leager lines and so forth.
What you have to bear in mind with a Female voice, is it actually sounds an octave higher than written, so a cornet, even if played at the same pitch will have the brightness to ring that fact true.
There is nothing to stop you playing my arrangement on flugel, but I have written a nice flugel part already and it really sounds lovely.
It would be interesting if someone would suggest I write it for Bb Bass! Wouldn't that just sound tuneful!
It's not that I'm against cornets it's just I love horn!! :D

it would sound beautiful on any instrument, except troms, and basses.
I doesn't matter what arrangment or composition it is
a] Nothing sounds nice on trombone
(except the solo in Disney Fantasy, but most trobone players can get that frigging top D, split in and ruin the piece - so go back to original statment a)

Listen to Alan Fernie's, Royal Mile Suite!!! 3rd movement is a blast for trombones.
Every instrument is great in the Brass Band, in my experience I have found the Basses to the worst, sometimes producing a hard coarse tone..........However English Bands are of a better quality than Scottish, I so hate admit

i was just wondering how you are going about arranging this piece as alan morrison has done it not that long ago for full brass band, piano and soloist, quintet and it is fairly accurate to the recording, how do you plan on making it different but using the same idea???????
Slight shame James can't answer, being banned an' all...
alan morrison has already arranged it as a cornet solo and it won the fodens richardson award as the best new arrangement. alan has also recorded it on his latest solo album

Indeed Wilky - and this is one of the best arrangements I have heard in a long time and his version of it on his CD, which is entitled Over the Rainbow, is simply stunning. You'll have to go some to do a better arrangement- and in Alan's arrangement it works perfectly for cornet.

Alan Morrison's version is published by Crabtree Music in versions for Soloist with Brass Band, Soloist with Piano and Brass Quintet (Tpt Solo). Soloist parts are included for Eb and Bb soloist and, in my opinion, the arrangement should work with almost any soloist, particularly with Piano.
I agree, Alan Morrison's arrangement is very good. The melody also suits Flugel very well. I've arranged it for Flugel and Band (in Ab) because I just thought Eva Cassidy's version was so atmospheric. The accomp needs to be very sympathetic though!!
Good luck.
Looking at this thread one thing springs to mind. I hope that everyone who has made (or published) arrangements of this melody have gained the appropriate copyright permission. Obviously the melody (Over the Rainbow) is very much still in copyright and the last thing any of us want is for somebody to get sued.

I'm pretty sure the likes of Alan Morrison, or his publisher would be clued up enough to sort out the permission first.

Hi, Of course we have got the license through for the Alan Morrison version of 'OTR', we would not work any other way.
NO - its been done too many times already.

This version was arranged by David Johnson for trombone soloist Gary Halsey. It was performed and recorded by the Royal Marine Band at the Mountbatten Festival of Music held at the Royal Albert Hall a couple of years ago. Obviously a Wind Band version though. Its very good.

I have arranged her version of Fields of Gold for Flugel and band. I have given it to Jagrins for copyright but have heard nothing from it so copyright for it must be a minefield.
Unfortunately that (and most of my arrangements) must therefore stay in-house for the next 60 years or so!
Not much money / incentive in this arranging lark is there?!

Someone mentioned earlier ab out the 'Over the Raibow'. on YBS's recording 'The Big Picture'. i have that recording and it's really very very good, so like Eva's recording.
Does anyone know if the arrangement of Over the Rainbow that Katrina Marzella recorded on her CD is for sale anywhere?
Doubt it, I think it was one that Brenden and Katrina did around the time of the recording, but I could be wrong.

Thanks Aidan, on the CD cover it quotes Cynthia Pules and Pipaa Poutso as arrangers but I have been unable to track it down on qoogle. Hopefully someday though I would probably have to spend the next ten years practicing it anyway.:(

I have had the pleasure of listening to Alan Morrisons arrangement of the same song, played so excellently by Neil Day (cornet) if it beats that one.............well done to you!!
