View Full Version : Steve Freckleton, Bass Trombone and Chairman of Langley Band

Is with great sadness that Langley Band announces the loss of a greatly respected and well loved bandsman.

Steve perfromed on bass trombone at the area contest for Langley Band today (06 March 2004).

After a fantastic performance, Steve then went on to assist Enderby Band whose Bass Trombone was unable to perform.

In the pub afterwards, Steve collapsed and was rushed to hospital following paramedic attention.

Very sadly, the medical staff were unable to help and Steve did not recover.

This has been a very emotional day for the band and Steve's many friends.

The Langley Band would like to dedicate their win at the Midlands area to Steve and our thoughts and best wishes are with his wife at this very sad time.

The Essence of Time
“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die…” (Ecclesiastes 3:1-2)

How could we ever contemplate the day of a band contest as being the time to die? Yet those of us who believe in God accept we cannot know God’s mind. But we may, however, take comfort in the thought that Steve has now won something far greater -- and eternal.

Loved-ones, friends and bands people will surely be shocked and saddened at this tragic loss. I didn't know Steve, but I offer my deepest sympathy to all who mourn.

As I write I happen to be listening to Elgar’s Prelude to The Dream of Gerontius which is playing on the BBC (from Liverpool Cathedral); it's influence is very affecting.

It was a sad moment when I heard from my brother (Gary, back row of Langley) to hear of Steve's untimely departure. From what I have read this morning Steve was a true asset to the brass band community and will be sadly missed. My family's thoughts and the thoughts of our own band are with Steve's family and with the members of Langley Band.

It must in some way be a tribute to Steve's talents that Langley won the Midlands Area. Anybody who knows the Coventry Variations test piece will realise that the bass trombone part significantly contributed towards a winning performance. Congratulations to you all and good luck at the finals.

To all the banding fraternity.

As the MD of Langley Band, may I thank you all for all your kind words. They may seem inconsequential to you and maybe of little significance, but to us they have been of comfort.

Steve's wife, Jude, has asked for no flowers except from immediate family. Jude has also indicated her desire that any donations should go to the band in order to purchase an instrument that we can have engraved and dedicated to Steve's memory.

To those of you that didn't know him, what a guy he was! Every band has got one - the guy that does everything. Gives people lifts, shifts percussion etc... He was the definitive bandsman's bandsman.

He was always supportive of me in everything I did, suggested or requested.

We've got a hard time ahead of us, but knowing we have your thoughts with us helps.

Once again, thank you to you all for your support in this sad time.
