the only other one i know off was Wellington comming last, they made a really bad mistake at the start of the 3rd movement but apart from that it was a good performance. i had them a lot higher up than last, and i got 3 out of the first 4 spot on!!

hey well done to pheonix west midlands, i used to play for the band they sort of merged with and played for them once, before they used to compete. Good look in Dundee - who knows my band might be joining you. :) well done to Long Eaton too :) the hard work paid off. :)

Kirby came 5th.
Well done Shaz....another good result. I didn't hear you infact I only heard 3 bands! It was a long day I was up at 6 *cries*. I did manage to hear Phoenix and I thought they were pretty good but the others I heard were quite dire  7th for us was a fair result and i agreed with the comments. There was lots of good playing but also too many stupid mistakes!!!! May Long Eaton go on to represent the Midlands in fine style in Dundee! P.S If you need any help on Cornet then give me a ring (as long as I haven't got another concert on that date :D )

Well done to all at the Mouthpiece you got the results published before BBW and 4barsrest :P I get the feeling that the Midlands 4th section was treated VERY badly by these two so called professional websites. Long live the Mouthpiece :D
Now lets hit the Area committies by publishing the Tables

I can confirm that Dronfield were 7th. A fair result in my view. It may seem harsh, but i felt that certain players in certain seats sort of well, err, bottled it. But as they say its a team game, and the whole blame doesnt lie with them.
I had a good day and as Ray our conductor said, "the stake is in the ground", the mark has been set, the only way now is forward.
I personally thought i played ok and actually really enjoyed performing. which i haven't done at an area for a while now.
Well Done to all participating bands, especially Phoenix, Long Eaton and Bakewell.
Can we please have a bar at Burton? please please please??

No Problems Sharon, as long as you can assure me it will be at least 28oC, any lower than this and even here I need a couple of top coats, which I don't have now :D just looked up the weather forecast for Dundee yesterday, only 33oF brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

There's a guy in town, who makes them and exports them to Europe, he's got a sweat shop, about 30 illegal Cambodian Immigrants work there. And it is a sweat shop, He made me some silk shirts, and when i went to collect them inside the work room it must have been at least 45oC..But the shirts are beautiful, and only cost about 3 pounds sterling each..

Hey Geordiecolin WHY do you need a bar ?
i think is some sort of student related disease called Alcoholism. I just have this urge to drink copious amounts of beer at brass band competitions.

7th place says it all....maybe thinking toooooooo much about how much beer you can consume on the day instead of 100% concentration on the music you played ? It was just the same when I conducted Dronfield, and others..

Bestwood years ago had a Secretary named James Daley, who whilst not being the best of players he was an excellent Sec, his favourite saying was "On the job, on the job, Off the job, it's nobodies business"and the proof is in the Band Archives, (wherever they are now)..1959 - 1967 at contests in the first 3 bands every time, and they used to average between 10 and 15 contests a year.Until you finished the job it was at least 100% commitment.... In my defence and as Rachel has stated, my mind was totally on the quality of our performance prior to and during our performance and the subject of beer did not enter my mind until we had left the stage. I believe that i played my part to the best of my ability, which, unfortuatley wasn't enough to boost our position. Our result was not in any way due to people thinking about beer or anything else, it was more down to a case of nerves.
Having said that though, I feel that socialising is a big a part of brass banding as the music and i find it disappointing that at the Midland Area there is no place for bandsmen/women to gather in one place and socialise.
There is time and a place for playing and a time and a place for socialising. I am sure in my mind where the times and places for each are.

Can I butt in on this one.... as Chairman at Dronfield I feel i'm as good a position as any to comment on the commitment of the band. Since before the Derby contest in fact since the new year when we started our drive to get a new MD we have had at most 2 or 3 players missing from each rehearsal, all players turning up on time and ready to rehearse. Something I know many bands would love to acheive. I know of a number of higher section bands who struggle to get half a band for many rehearsals.
Also the drinking or more importantly socialising part is why we do it. If the music was the most important thing, we'd all be professionals. We do it to socialise, contest day is when we can see many old friends from other local bands and compare gossip on which cornet player has been snogging which Conductor http://members.lycos.co.uk/matlockband/gal12b.htm!!!
I would like to defend my band and freinds on this one, the commitment is our strongest point. What we lack is experience, being a young band, many of our players (myself included) have been contesting for a relatively short time, my first being last years area.
Our bass section, and without wanting to blow my own trombone, our trombone section were outstanding on the day. Few bass sections got the start of the second movement together with a quality sound and quiet enough. Ours did.
Although I appreciate that you probably didn't mean any offence, the band has put in an awful lot of commitment over the last few weeks and months. It has been a hard physically (and emotionally) draining time. So congratulations to the band, and have a few more beers!! (maybe even some on me) ;)

I would like to apologise to Brian for my post re: dronfields commitment. on reflection i feel that i have read too much into your post and my response was a bit harsh.
I have decided not to edit the post i originally made because i stand by what i said, but i feel that this was not (to quote my post!) the time or the place to make those points.
Hope i didn't offend anyone

Hey Colin, no problems, no appology needed...I'm out of it these days, but as a Conductor I used to despair at the amount of beer some bands people consume before and / or after their performances. I'm not familiar with the Burton Contest venue, but remember for years their were complaints from audience and performers (on stage) at the De Montfort Hall Leicester, about the noise coming from the bar. That was one of the reasons the bar was moved outside, and the venue changed..also to Tim in his digression, do be careful about "who's been snogging " with whom, could be dangerous....Walls have ears,as they say..Best regards to all my friends at Dronfield..If I still have any....Brian

the noise from the bar at de montford hall Leister was sometimes louder than the bands!, but a nice bar venue would be nice too, where people can relax have a meal and a few drinks! after playing of course

Thanks Brian. I'll ask around if there's anyone who remembers you. Keith Oldman and Keith Arrowsmith still play for us and they've been with Dronfield since forever!
From what i can tell from your experiences you'd be greatly surprised and happy with Dronfield at the minute. After losing our MD and several key players to ASDA Stocksbridge after our (dubious in my opinion) relegation from the 3rd section, we have all knuckled down, appointed a new MD (Ray White) whose focus and direction has started a new era. Our result at the area was the start and hopefully in a year's time we'll be better equipped to push for a higher postion. The band is pulling together well now and i am sure that you would be proud of us all!!

the words " belvoir Castle" :) :) come to mind!!
Remind me to go on the coach to Dundee, not drive myself.
Mind you, I managed to find Preston alright. And Crich, Burton, Leamington Spa, Leicester (and I'd like to point out that I didn't get lost going to Leicester and half of the band did :smug:) etc etc etc.
It's not my fault that they moved Belvoir Castle to the other end of the A38

Remember both Keiths and also Andrew Silman, who I hear has just left..Did Ray White used to be with Shirland, as Conductor for a while ?When I was there most of the Milners were playing, and Trev Benson, can recall lots of faces on the photo I have but not the names, and of course at that time the band was Stagecoach

Ray White did indeed conduct Shirland for a while. Andrew Silman recently left to move across the pennines. Although i'm not sure if he has actually moved yet. i understand he played 2nd trom for Darley Dale at the area

Just reading back to the Baldeagle's comments - I thought it was terrible that they did not provide a review of the 4th section results. It was a very good day and the top four had every one guessing who would go to Dundee. Well done to Sharon and Long Eaton - its great two bands from Nottngham going to Dundee.
Talking of Dundee, Rutty my dear I worry about you - did you do geography at school?
