Well, they said the prize for the best trombone goes to the trombone from Hathern Band. Yay, go Jonny, was the cry. But by the time he got the pot in his hand, they said, "oh sorry, its a mistake, its for the best bass trombone". But it was still with Hathern, so yay, go mouse go.! Though I had little strenght left for cheering, it was the end of the second contest in one day for me (in a non-playing role that is!)

Now home and chilled a bit. Still think we got an absolutely disgraceful result but ....... blah de blah de blah, thats of no interest to people who weren't there, I'm sure people have all had their results that were at the most polite pretty unfair, but the point I would like to raise is how to get results above reproach. A few practical suggestions are:

1) At closed adjudications from the time of the last band playing the adjudicators should be locked in the box on their own and ABSOLUTELY NO LOCAL COMMITTEE MEMBERS should be allowed to have contact with them before the results are announced.

2) Results should be announced by adjudicators not officials and nobody but adjudicators should write on comments sheets.

3) If adjudicators are not in a box they should remain visible to the audience from the time of the last band playing and not go into a back room for a conversation with the organisers.

4) Adjudicators should have a home area that they are not allowed to adjudicate.

5) There should be a liason (not from the area) between the local committee and the adjudicators at a contest, between whom there should be NO CONTACT from when the adjudicator has been booked.

I know this sounds like a rant from someone who feels that they have had a bad result, (and I do, I have had results that were felt to be unfair before like everybody else, but nothing like this) but surely all of the things I have suggested above would only enhance the reputation of contests.

Also do people feel that paper shuffling does go on? Does how well you get on with the organisers affect your position once you get past first and last place?

PS We will certainly be looking carefully at the adjudicators comments from this performance and looking how this can improve our performance at the area contest.

Also I will stress again that I am talking generally as to ways of improving credibility of contests and am certainly not suggesting anything derogatory (sp?) about anybody who organised NEMBBA today.

Best of luck for the area, I wouldn't take a "dodgy" result at NEMBBA to heart!

Ra!

I must admit to being a bit chuffed to have won the second section. From what others have said I think that Hathern played very well, and even one of our own supporters had them winning, but it's down to the men in the box. Just as well for us!

Well done to everyone that went - I really am surprised that more NEMBBA members don't go to this contest, because we've always found it very useful as a testing ground for the area.

I really enjoyed the piece - Philip Sparke really is the modern Brass Band master composer. Kaleidescope is an excellent test piece, and I even had my own (unscripted) solo!

Wahey!
My first ever contest and we came away with 4 trophies plus special long service award for Janet.
You missed all the drama on the way home Dave.
We were on the coach going home and we passed a group of teenagers who had just smashed a bus shelter. As we drove past they threw something at the bus and smashed one of the windows.
Wrong move! - as you know we have four serving police officers in the band. They gave chase and Our Sop player Steve caught the culprit. Two bags in one day! (he also won best sop player)

Celebrations were put on hold for a while, but it was an unforgettable first contest.

BTW we picked up a bag of drum sticks on the way out that may not be ours. Please get in touch via the web site if they are yours.

Congrats to Long Eaton at their first contest in the 3rd section and also to Carlton Brass.

I know the first three in the fourth section were Matlock, Rolls Royce (good on 'em!) and Newhall. I then had to phone our solo cornet player to inform he had won the soloist trophy as he had gone home due to a stinking cold(!) so I have no idea where anyone else came.

As people have stated, it is the area that matters the most, and I wish all bands luck there.

On the other issue raised, I think if people have an issue with the way contests are run, then I suggest they bring it up at a NEMBBA meeting either themselves or via their secretary. They should surely have the relevant contacts to make a complaint about the organisation of the contest if someone feels that strongly about something??

personally I think its always a well run friendly contest!

Sorry about earlier post. Looking at it now I was obviously still a bit narked at the result.

I was certainly not attacking NEMBBA which is a contest I have enjoyed going to for the last 2 years, and which is an excellent run out for the area.

We just have to accept it and move on and aim to play so well at the area that we can't be denied a good place.

We know all about going to contests with no sop and no percussion. (And no bass trombone and no Bb Basses and 2 solo cornets and....)

Shattering Times at Carlton Brass

On Sunday 15th February Carlton Brass celebrated their entry into the second section by winning at the NEMBBA Contest at Rolls Royce Derby. They were awarded 186 points of a number one draw coming in front of Hathern and Blidworth Bands. The bands second horn player Janet Bailey was presented with a certificate from NEMBBA marking her 40 years of service to the Banding Community. Steve Parker picked up the best soprano prize and Gary Glover clinched the best euphonium prize. The Band received the Association Trophy and Tony Wilson also picked up the winning conductors cup.

On their way back to Nottingham on the coach, the bus was involved in an incident involving a youth who was trying to smash a bus shelter, as the coach passed this youth he threw a missile at the coach and shattered one of the large side windows. It was real bad news for this young hooligan as he did not realise that on the coach were 4 off duty members of Nottinghamshire Constabulary. The youth was caught and then handed over to Officers from Derbyshire Constabulary.

Life is just full of fun at Carlton Brass !!!

Yes well done to everyone at the NEMBBA contest yesterday also congratulations to Carlton Brass for winning the second section. Didnt agree on the choice of sop prize though, I personally thought the sop player of Blidworth Band had a much more dynamic, poweful sound, and could be heard. Cant remember hearing Carlton sop or Hathern sop shining.

Not bitter though, Burton is the contest that counts lets hope that all three bands do well there.

And yes the NEMBBA contest should be supported more in the upper sections doesnt really make much of a competition does it.

STEADY ON OLD CHAP !!!!!!!
You may have played well but so did all the other bands too.
I thought the 4th section was very competitive and had a high standard of playing. Rather than ranting about being 7th look for the positives of the day and work on them. There is still 4 weeks to go to the area and NO band can afford to rest on there laurels.
As with regards to your moans about the organisation of the contest, can you be more specific in what you are suggesting ?????

Pythagoras
16.02.2004, 18:59
Am not moaning specifically about NEMBBA, but surely things like locking the adjudicators away between the last band playing and the results or having them in complete view of the audience at this period would stop people like me being able to moan in future. Was certainly not suggesting that anything was done yesterday that was improper, was just suggesting a few ideas to improve the appearance of fairness.

I deeply apologise to memberss of any of the bands competing yesterday if I have offended you in what I now realise was a rather ill-thought out post. Was not attacking any of the other bands.

i think what needs to be emphasised here is that under the current system people can always have personal doubts over results, especially if (on paper at least) they may seem a little ambiguous.

i do believe however, that anything that can be done to remove doubt and ambiguity, should be done and will benefit the entire system of contesting and banding in general. Perhaps there should be a greater degree in clarity in relation to how placings are decided. this would prevent certain issues (that nobody wants or needs) raising their ugly heads from time to time.

i must make it very clear that i am not, in any way suggesting that results are 'fixed' or 'influenced' or anything like that.

Roll on Burton :D

I have always wondered myself why the adjudicator can't walk out of the box and onto the stage and announce the results immediately. Why all the faffing around??!

Di B
18.02.2004, 12:32
I think anything that can be done to improve adjudication on general is a good idea, but we have had numerous topics on that in a general discussion enviroment on here, (ie think about just one man being the decider of if you go up or down a section at the area for example?!)

However, IMHO, the fact the header of this is 'NEMBBA contest' is probably not the best subject line for a general gripe about adjudication and contest regulations etc

If you want to do anything to improve contests though you would need the dedication of getting involved with your local committee to really make a difference - if you choose to do that then I really do wish you the best of luck and hope a difference can be achieved that will benefit all bands.

If it helps, (I don't know if you were there for the results) but one of the adjudicators was very stringent on tempo markings indeed, and our comments do reflect this a little too. The speech made to all conductors about tempos just before the results also made this very clear!!!

Don't know what they will be looking for at the area.... but I'll be looking for the beer and thats all I know :guiness :guiness :guiness :guiness

See you then and best of luck to you
