Are you doing a contest before next March, would be hard to give you a price with no form to go on. Simon Dobson conducting??

Graded 1st section usually means that you're Champ standard but I know they're not allowed to put new bands straight in there so I can only assume you'll be in with a shout.

Good Luck with the new venture, when was the last time Devon had a Champ Section band?

Our first public outing will be the Wessex Contest in November (Simon is otherwise occupied that day, but the band will be in very capable hands)

Simon will be taking the band at the areas next year, he is a major part of this new set-up, and hopefully will grow old and grey around STORM Brass over the coming years.

As far as I know Devon has NEVER had a Championship standard band, so that is our 3 year plan to achieve

I'm going to leave a full update until after this weekend's round of contests (which includes the Wessex Assoc Champs). It was a decent result, yes, but you won't shorten that much because I base form on my own ratings NOT 4br. It might suprise you to know that I have you and Strata much closer in form than 4br do, so it wasn't a suprise to me

If the bad result came BEFORE the good one then your odds would probably have been the same as before, I guess you're only as good as your last outing.

For me there's no stand-out favorite at Torquay so one could spring from the pack, Verwood? Why not...

With out sounding disrespectful, how does winning the GBBA contest make you more likely to win the areas!?

Paddy Flower

With out sounding disrespectful, how does winning the GBBA contest make you more likely to win the areas!?

If you mean Lydbrook in Champ Section then you'll notice that most of the field has been shortened due to Flowers' poor result at Brass in Concert. Even money out to 15/8 is the same as saying their chances have gone from 50% to about 35% which obviously boosted everyone else (your Dad may disagree of course ).

Or do you mean City of Bristol? They won at GBBA but also won at SWBBA Torquay. Coupled with a mediocre result from Brunel at the Wessex BBA gives good reason to shorten them.

To address the point about sounding disrespectful to the GBBA, I view contests in TWO catagories and adjust ratings accordingly. The two catagories are based on how seriously (i believe) bands approach a contest. The higher catagory would be anything to do with the Nationals (Areas & Finals) and also anything to do with The British Open (Spring Festival etc..), as well as Europeans and English National. The lower catagory would be anything else, although I don't put a huge difference on the two, bands afterall would prefer to win no matter what they're entering.

Of course you cannot forget the old adage 'You can only beat what's put in front of you' i think that's how it goes anyway

Chris Hicks
04.12.2009, 18:20
I was referring to the top section yes, just with there only being two bands in the field, but i see where it would have come from though with flowers' result at BIC (which i would possibly argue isn't neccesarily poor when you consider the outfits there, but thats another topic ;))

Thanks for the explanation though

If rumours are true that StormBrass has pulled out of the Areas then I am right that this makes no difference to the odds?

Verwood B is a new Band and is made up from some experienced players (4th to 2nd section) and some complete novice adults who have recently started playing. Ratio is about 75/25 experienced/novice. Does that help Paddy? Conductor is young but has had a higher section band before.

Storm Brass are a bit of mystery to me, they've pulled out of 2 contests (SWBBA Torquay & Weymouth) to my knowledge and now the area? I know The Rebel Tuba is always lurking, any comments Rebel?

Verwood 'B'. There's a number of experienced outfits in this section but as the senior band has been so succesful in the last couple of years I'm guessing a few former Verwood players may have come out of retirement?. I'll unofficially say 25/1 for now. Thanks for the info and best of luck to them on their debut

Maybe the rumours about Storm are not true as they have made a couple of new signings now...?
Good luck to them anyway.

Yeah i've just read the 4br article as well. It's difficult to offer a price without any contesting form to go on.

I've a similar situation with Catterick Brass @ the NOE area, 2nd section but (apparently) full of Army musos so word is they'll walk it.

Newly graded bands do tend to well in their section as regional committees are relunctant to just put them where they think they belong, I think they put them a section lower and make them earn the promotion, which is fair enough I suppose as it would (rightly) test the loyalty of the players in the new band.

I've heard from a reliable source that rehearsals on A Moorside Suite are going well at Storm and they are confident of a good result. :)

I reckon the WoE 1st section is going to be a tough one this year; any one of the bands entering could do very well! It's a shame that Soundhouse and Woodfalls Concert have withdrawn though, hope to see them back next year!

Think the WoE contest is going to be an interesting one in all sections this year. Second section looks like a really good battle too - good luck to Cinderford and Forest of Dean Brass from Gloucestershire and the Bristol based bands too.

Not playing for the area :((work commitments) but I sat in with portishead for a blow and any band that thinks moorside is easy is a numpty!
I think it will stretch all of the bands as there is now where to hide. The piece demands players to be on top form. I think all of the bands will play the piece however only a few will play it well!

Agree with you wholeheartedly Keith. Its hard to do those simple things well sometimes like playing together, in tune, dynamics and to play musically without sounding like a dysfunctional robot. Not looking forward to this one at all. So much easier to hide behind lots of semi-quavers. Some parts of it we do play beautifully but others...oh dear oh dear oh dear.

I think the First Section is going to be a cracking contest, 14 bands possibly all capable of claiming the places if they play well. Having said that - there are some very strong bands who will obviously start as favourites although I believe the real winner on the day will be a certain Mr Holst.....

All of us wished each other well and genuinely meant it. So I`m rooting for Woodfalls, Poole and Aldbourne. (And of course Yeovil and Hyde and Otterbourne because the people are so lovely in those bands)

We will do our best and if it doesn`t come off so be it, (we are not a nervous Band on stage) so see you in the bar at Torquay. Feel free to buy me a red wine if I know you or even if you don`t. Got shockingly drunk last year. Forgot to eat and kept getting handed alchohol while talking to anyone and everyone. Whatever the result in the 1st section - there are 14 damn fine Bands in it anyone of which could take the title. Good luck to all. XXX

Hi all, on the eve of the contests (well actually its 02:51 and I just finished work - can't wait to get a proper job).

As Sam (looking to win the 2nd Baritone Solo award at Torquay, this year) has stated STORM Brass will be present and in what seems to be a tough section and a close call between all the bands with obvious contenders St. Austell, Aldbourne, Bournemouth, and Portishead to name but a group of about 9 good bands looking for honours.

As for STORM, no-one knows how they will perform on the day, including the players, I only know from experience how half a dozen players perform on the contest stage, the rest of the band are all unknown quantities.

Rehearsals have gone very well, but I expect that from all bands in this section and , as per usual, whoever produces the performances that the ADJUDICATORS feel give the music the most justice. The middle movement will be the gaining and losing of a place in the finals.

Any how, good luck to all bands on the day, let battle commence..........

Mesmerist

You are correct Bill. Depends on the number of Bands competing on how many represent their Area. Usually its the 1st two. (Always seems unfair that a Section with under 10 bands sends 2 but ones with nearly 20 competing are also only allocated 2 places).

Chris Hicks

Unless of course you're competing in the Championship section in which case you qualify to play at the Royal Albert Hall

My apologies to those that answered me before. I thought I understood the system, but I am not sure I do.

For the Regional Contests a test piece is selected for each of the five sections - Championship, 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th - and that is the only music played by the bands. The winning bands in each section (usually 2, but sometimes more if there are a lot of bands taking part) go on to take part in the National Finals, when they will play a different piece, again, one set for each section.
