Since we are on the predicting game:

Who do u think will get top place in the midlands regional in all the sections?

If anyone gets this right I will definately buy them a pint!

I reckon

Ch: Thoresby
1st: NCT
2nd: Shirley Band
3rd: Carlton Brass
4th: Bakewell Silver

Boneman

okay then here goes . . .

Ch. Jackfield (well I have to be loyal!)
1. Kibworth (superb band)
2. Shirley (I know someone with this name)
3. Wem (come on Rog!)
4. Wellington (my Dad is playing for them!)

Best of luck to everyone competing at Burton Town Hall!

Who I think will win:-

Ch: Desford
1st: Shirland
2nd: Shirebrook
3rd: Would love to be loyal but I reckon on Carlton
4th: Rushden

Who I would like to win

Ch: Thoresby (local to home)
1st: Hathern (local to uni)
2nd: Harworth (friend's play there)
3rd: Whitwell (my home band)
4th: Hathern B (again, local to uni!)

but as they say, it's not the winning, it's the taking part!

With the exception of the 4th Section, 4BarsRest have now completed their famous 'Dodgy Predictions' for the Midlands Areas.

makes interesting reading . . .

Roger,

I see you are the 'Dark Horses', as for us they seem to be politely saying that we'll be lucky not to come last.

I can't imagine what makes them think that!

Roger Thorne

Hi Simon,

Dark Horses eh! . . .

I should think so with a mixture of young fillies, a few carthorses and one or two young studs.
Oh, and not forgetting the 'Old Grey' who always pulls them along!

I was surprised to read about Chris Lewis. He been brilliant since he took the helm at Jackfield. Its a pity he can't continue into the Championship Section. Have you got anybody in mind for the job yet?

I presumme he's still taking you on Sunday.

See you in Burton.

Bum!

Well, it looks like 4br have Long Eaton in the spotlight for 1st in the fourth section!

Bit miffed we don't even get a mention tho! Then again, with our run outs at the areas in the third section you can see why!!! Funny, as we have a stronger band than ever this year but hopefully we can prove 'em wrong and build on the Association result we achieved! :)

How do 4br come up with their predictions I wonder? Do they base it on area results alone, or do they look at last years contests overall? Do they take into consideration any news they receive or grapevine gossip on the bands that have fell apart/improved significantly?

Does anyone know?!

Cheers

That was my thoughts, but they don't do that all the time or both Dronfield and Matlock would be in the top 6 in the fourth section!!! I assume they look at what section the band was in last year and their last couple of years performance only? I would just find it interesting to find out how the 'calculations' were done.

Oh, and as for the 'eating chocolate' comments... 'twould have been more like a beer training session pre contests! lol!

Carlton Brass - of course!

Oddly, I'm fancying Matlock of the fourth section having heard them in Leicester last year - I thought they were excellent. I'd also like to see Long Eaton do well after last years success.

Bakewell have got to be in the running though.

Aww! Thanks me dear! :D Believe it or not, we have also strengthened the band since that contest too! (If you remember we played there with just 2 from row cornets!)

My personal wish would be for Matlock and Long Eaton to grab 1st and 2nd... but as I play with one and the other was my first ever band it is why I said I am biased! :)

Do hope you are right with your predictions rutty! Good luck to all at Carton too... its been a while since I came to help you out!

Interesting that 4BR issue the following disclaimer regarding their predictions for the fourth section:

"The rest can take heart that if they come in the prize list they can put two good old fingers up at us and have a laugh at our lack of knowledge!"

Hmmm...twenty-five pairs of fingers from Matlock then, we hope!

4Bars Rest predictions have been the kiss of death for us! Iwan admits that they're dodgy - but I'm hoping and praying that he doesn't tip us this year...

What about poor old us??

We did beat Matlock in the 3rd section last year by 4 places and we had a fairly good result in 3rd section at Pontins in the Autumn as well. 4th place at NEMMBA with a below strength band and temporary conductor was a good indicator. I doubt we'll win it but we'll there or there abouts

Not to disappoint or anything but 4br predicted us as dark horses for pontins and we came 20th or something like that, 2nd from last anyway! We did play really badly though, we were just really nervous.

For my money (which ain't much) I think that the 4th section this year is going to be close and should be very enjoyable  , there are 4 bands in the running and it should be a tight contest :P All I can say is "The best of luck to all Bands"

Ahh, well, I predicted who I thought would win, as did everyone else. Why not put your own thoughts down?

For the record, I don't underestimate Dronfield. I don't know the band that well, (although what some do to raise band funds at Pontins weekends scares me!!!) but Ray White is good in my opinion. I'd put you in the top six, yes, but for me, Bakewell and Long Eaton will have strong performances.

At the end of the day, any one of us could come last too! Its a case of what happens on the day that is important.

In total agreement Di!

Anything could happen on that Stage. I know Dronfield well and they have a strong band with a very good band sound. It was unfortunate for them to be relegated this year but they did have some dissapointing results in the last year or so. In the past nerves have often got the better of some players and their performance on stage has not really reflected the quality of the band. BUT these things do happen! The rehearsals are sounding good. A new conductor and a band committed to working well together as a team...lets hope it is a good combination.

I have alot of respect for Long Eaton and Matlock bands they have worked hard and (like all of us) been through good and bad times! They too have committed members and the MD's have worked hard to develop players into the bands they have today.

Good luck and I will cya all on Sunday!

For the book my predictions are:

1. Bakewell
2. Long Eaton
3. Kirkby
4. Matlock/Dronfield
