Alright, so only 4 people have voted, but we still rule! :D

i should stand up 4 the percussion section, i mean without them things like coral and rock out, it just wouldnt make sense, and the snowman would not sound the same without the symbol bit.
And of course good old bohemian rapsody would be dead without the percussion.

Plus i gotta stand up for them cos otherwise my boyfriend will moan as he is a percussionist!!! cos he has more brains then a drummer

I polled as euphonium since I consider this THE BEST instrument in the band but in the past have played:

horn (first instrument and the one I always went back to!), cornet, trombone, Eb bass and am now very hapilly playing Euph so I don't think I'll get a shot at Sop.

Cheers

Oh and I also had a bash on timps in the final piece we played at an entartainments contest.

So "Jack" of all trades etc. etc.

I only ever wanted to play trombone - so this is what I started playing and this is what I still play! Of course this is the best instrument - there are things that Trombones can do that no other instrument can!

Trombones rule!

Listen here people!!!! you are obviously misguided with your views on the best instrument!!!! The Baritone is a SPECIALIST instrument, only to be played by specialist people who have been specially trained in the art of Baritoning. Remember people, respect your Baritone players, you know it makes sense!!

I can't do this poll since there's no option for conductors or composers. When I played regularly I alternated between soprano, cornet and flugel.

I think you need another category for the multitalented...

Andy--sure you meant to say Euph players are failed/rubbish/inept etc BARITONE players that cant cope with the many varied parts we specialise in.
It takes a lot of patience to sit on the same line as you euph "players"and to listen to that all night!!(Im sure many Baritoners will agree)

What about if you can happily play both? :P

Although euph is my first love I admit *s* I say there are different catagories of players....

Baritones.... those failed euph players/can't find anywhere else to put them players or those players that every band in the area wants as they are incredibly good at what they do!

Remind me which one are you??

Someone once said to me there are many good euph players, but there are few good bari players.....

As for euphonium players I admit most have that 'showy offie attitude' which I don't possess so maybe I am just a bari player in disguise?!

I am so confused now I'm off to the bar..... *hic!*

You wanna blow my what?
07.03.2003, 16:16
ick....I don't like baritones.

I have always played tenor horn.....one day my mum took me to a band and they gave me a cornet for about 15 minutes to see if I could make it work. Then 10 minutes later they gave me a horn and that was that.

I have also played Clarinet, Viomolin, Saxamophone, recordererer, and um....trumpet, and ONCE I played baritone in band but I didn't like it and everyone was like "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! BARITONES ARE EVIL!"

from the other topic

Conductors should also note that when a brass player gives up, he/she is given two sticks and becomes a percussionist, when a percussionist gives up/becomes no good/loses the will to live, he/she has a stick taken off them and becomes a conductor!!!!!!

and when you can't conduct, you adjudicate!

I can play baritone! it's quite easy though!

I played baritone once in an eisteddfod with a school band here, and it was horrible, didn't get on with it at all. Love horn though, and currently play cornet. I have to admit, I like playing french horn too...

Whilst reading through this particular thread, it has become very apparent , that people do really have certain hang-ups about the instrument (Baritonus-Baritoni) that whilst it appears to be a mild mannered instrument , I can sympathise with the majority out there and say that in all my years of banding I can't work out its true purpose!!!!!!

On the other hand there may be the few of you out there who ask me what purpose i serve playing the Bass Chainsaw!!!

STOP....... take a step back and then compare me to a baritone!!!!!!!!

Beware of The Blonde.

I moved from flugel to euph, I have never been an official "baritoner".

Don't fear edgey as the criticism of percussionists came from bagpuss who is a 'kitchen department' player himself!

And we do all worship the percussion section particularly in cheesy poppy songs as they allow us lowly solo cornet players to take it easy!

I didn't kno there were so many of us tuba players out there...we really are gonna take over the world! :D
watch out, all your brass bands will be filled with tuba plays dragging behind them their lethal instrument cases (AKA "leg breakers" - people get out of the way but are caught by the bell in the back of the leg heh heh heh  )

Libby
05.04.2003, 22:18
Nice to find out that some of you lowly cornet players secretly want to play horn - very understandable of course with horns being the best!! Can't say I've ever found our Baritones to be particularly menacing but the Euphs are rather big-headed!   But not as bad as Sop Cornets - they can be a truly scary player both in temprament (is that spelt right????  )and sound! :hammer

Assuming the wee people who blow the wee cornet things actually like what they play... -
It should be no surprise that they are the most popular - so many of the blighters sitting opposite me and they wonder why bass trombonist only have two volumes - loud and louder. :?

Salli
15.04.2003, 13:47
I used to play the cornet (for about 11 years), but then had a go on Euph and discovered that it was so much easier. I was then moved to Flugel to fill a gap and then on to Horn and I've stayed there ever since - it's brill! :D

I keep being pestered to go back on cornet, but playing cornet is too much like hard work and it doesn't help when our MD keeps moaning at them (does it Roger?)

Ah the memories of that piece. Anyone who did the 24hr blow at yorkshire Co-op surely remembers the infamous "Tam-Tam ad lib at dynamic fffffffffff" incident that not only drowned the whole band, but also woke up most of north yorkshire and brough the police out!

Definitely an '"ave it!" moment.

How come no split on Eb and BBb basses? Would be interesting to see. Seems like for every 3 Eb players there's one BBb.
