http://www.themouthpiece.com/images/tmp_news_icon.gifHiya All

Well, we're back...!! and we managed to get a fair amount of the upgrade stuff completed, but there is a lot more that we need to finish. So, can I ask everyone to pop a post in here if you spot anything you feel is missing from what used to be there, and I can then set about sorting it out for you - in pretty much the same manner as we have during previous upgrades.

Hope you like the new fresh style, it will make things much easier for me to manage going forward.

I appreciate there's a lot still to do, such as banners, adverts, home page layout etc, but we've been at it for 6 hours and we're all done for today. I am away tomorrow and can look to complete any outstanding items during the week. We also thought that we should re-open tMP despite not having everything finished or as ready as I would have liked, the site though is fully functional.

Thanks for your patience, and hope you enjoy the new look. Keep an eye out for new features and functions over the coming days.

John and the Team.

Grand job on the update folks and hope you all had a good day.

My only query is the new brightness of the site.
I used to like the dark blue surrounding of the site.
Perhaps I need to get a pair of sunglasses now!?!?!?!

Well done anyway!!!

Well done, John. It looks like the upgrade was successful. One question ... will there be any options to customize/change the display?

Very sorry folks anyone who came across that.

Nice work - I didn't really like the old front page to tMP - it is after all predominantly a forum and I was confused by some of the 'extra' bits'n'piece on the old front page. This new one is much cleaner and easier and makes it very clear what tMP is. Thanks for the update.

No, it's not intentional, but again I'm afraid time ran away with us and left us. We're aware we're a few tabs missing and should be getting around to adding them in shortly. :)

Hi Matt

The version of the software that we are now on is new to me too and there's loads of stuff here that I am not familiar with myself, however as we discover these new features and functions I'd be more than happy to come up with an 'idiots guide'. If you see something that looks cool though, please let us know yeah...:)

Quite surprised by the new look, but I'll get used to it....

One thing I've noticed is that the "today's posts" when NOT logged on as a user generates a 404 error.

On thing I don't know if you have an option for is what gets displayed when you hover over a thread title. Currently you get the first post in the thread. I've always thought when I've seen it on other BBSs that it would be better to see the last post of the thread!

What does everybody think of the new feature in your user profile ... that of being able to know who has been viewing it recently? (it's on the bottom right side). If you click on someone's user profile it will publicly log you as a visitor to that page for all to see.

John,

As a subscriber already will I have to resubscribe to lose the ads?

Can someone explain the difference between quote and multiquote?

1 - possibly Mike... not too sure. It's a new feature you see, and one that isn't implemented as yet and as such you haven't really paid for it. However, I do understand that you are a regular subscriber and as such, for people such as yourself it is likely to get added to the current list of benefits of subscribing :tup

2 - quote = quote just a single post, whereas multiquote = quote from multiple posts. If you want to try multiquote, click on the multiquote button on say two or three posts, then click the quote button on the final post you want to quote, and all the items you quoted from each of the individual threads get quoted in your new reply. Make sense...?

Looking good!

I haven't found any big glitches or error messages browsing round the site, which is good news. The only anomalies I've noticed is that several avatars aren't showing (presumably will be fixed as the upgrades complete) and the tabs across the top blue bars go weird if you change window size - something to do with the word wrap? eg. at the moment it looks like this:
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm181/alex-vicary/random%20stuff/screenshot.jpg

The new user functions, multiple quotes etc seem to be the same as the other forum I spend way too much time on (!) - if I could figure out how to use them they must be pretty intuitive and user-friendly :)

'Fraid not folks, it's because I need to have just the one style so I can carry out the software updates and upgrades, and not rely on paying a coder to do this for me. When we had several styles, all the amendments I have spent the majority of the last few days applying to the new style - needed to be applied to each of the styles - which was an extraordinary amount of work, and took way too much of my time to complete - and to be honest, I can't continue to manage the site this way in the future. It's just not practical.

Very sorry about this, but for me, having a single style makes life so much easier; it is also cheaper too as I now don't need to pay a coder to carry out any upgrades. There are so many amendments to the code on tMP that simply 'upgrading' according to the vB procedure isn't possible.

Hope that explains why I am proceding with just the one style.

Hope that explains why I am proceeding with just the one style. That makes absolute sense, John, and I don't think anybody would (or should) argue with you on that.

Just one clarification though if you wouldn't mind. You said:

The current Black_Text style will be going shortly, and will be replaced by a black_text version of the current styleDoes this mean the ONLY style available will be the 'tmp_2008 Black Text'? Or will there be 'tmp_2008' AND 'tmp_2008 Black Text'?

I don't often get as confused as this?

Hey Matt

No probs... there will be two styles;

tMP_2008 and tMP_2008_text_black

... they will both look the same i.e. with colours and images and banners etc, but the text within threads will be black instead of blue...

John, in the original thread (http://www.themouthpiece.com/vb/showpost.php?p=608493&postcount=1)announcing these changes you mentioned that the meeting on Saturday would discuss, among other things, ways to move tMP forward. We can all see and appreciate how much work has gone into the techy side of that process , but I'm interested to know if there were any discussions about the more "touchy feely" aspects of the discussions that took place on this thread (http://www.themouthpiece.com/vb/showthread.php?t=32000) - stuff like moderating style, content of threads and posts, the family friendly policy, how to approach some of the more "contentious" discussions, what to do about what some people see as the increase in trolling, etc. ? And if there were, what conclusions did you reach, if any? :D

John are you going to change the way search results are listed when you click on "New Posts" to exclude totally random, thread games and sports etc (or whatever was excluded before) like on the previous version?

Hi Andy - what we planned on getting accomplished on Saturday was mostly completed - but I have to say the upgrade was not without its complications and errors. We ran in to several failure notices, and were at one point totally stumped as to how we recover - panic mode was verging on starting!! Together with my mate Chris, Steve and Di we managed to get things recovered - though not fully, hence making significant effort over the previous few days to catch up and complete all we wanted to complete. I did have to contact the coder I have used previously (in Switzerland) to help, thank goodness he was at an airport - which is where he managed to sort out many of our issues. Believe it or not we're still not completed on the technical aspects even now, just now enough hours in the day to fully complete all tasks.

As for the more 'touch feely' aspects - we are still having discussions backstage regarding moderating style et al; and to be totally honest - although we have quite a comprehensive set of Rules and Giudelines - there is no way we can implement these on tMP in a hard and fast manner - to a certain extent, each circumstance warrants its own method and process. The rules and guielines are there in an attempt to maintain control and pragmatism, but where there are contentious issues we do have to look at these individually and deal with them accordingly.

Having said that, we acknowledged a little while back that there was room for improvement - I guess there always is, and we are constantly discussing how best to deal with issues. We will be releasing a sumamrised version of the rules and guidelines, and will be reiterating our stance regarding trolls, spam and infractions. One thing is for certain, that we will certainly be maintaining our family friendly forum policy - so there's no change re any items related to that!

It's a difficult one, but we will continue to do our best to manage the site in the most pragmatic manner. We can never please everyone all the time, but we will strive to please most people most of the time :)

Fully concur with that! A much better all round design. I think it's clearer as well.

One thing, though, I see that the National Areas are not inlcuded now, or am I seeing things?

You should still be able to see this area under the Adjudicators comments.

Also, will the hover facility to view playing history be returning?

It should Gaz, as long as I can stay off the wine and figure out how to code it for the new templates... :)

If I did, that'll have to go

I think its just on the black txt version, all the recent posts come up when I click on "New Posts" button at the top.

Also on the home page snippets of some recent posts are displaced even tho I click the tab every time to make them smaller, tho when I come back theyre there again. Dont know if that makes sense!

I think (reading this quote from John), that he'll be doing away with that version shortly and a black text version of the main style, tMP-2008 will be implemented.

I know what you mean, you're clicking on the arrow to close the box so it doesn't show the contents?
We're currently in discussions as to the content of the front page. It does look like we have some duplication at the moment.

What does everybody think of the new feature in your user profile ... that of being able to know who has been viewing it recently? (it's on the bottom right side). If you click on someone's user profile it will publicly log you as a visitor to that page for all to see.

Has this changed now as although I can see I've had visits to my profile, I can't see who. Or am I missing something ?

Di
18.07.2008, 18:19
I don't think anything has been changed. It says "recent" visitors. I'm not sure what the timescale is on that. Yours shows "7 views" but only two recent visitors. I'll have to ask the boss on this one what the timescale is .;)

Hi Guys, John in partic.

I'm using firefox for a bit and I've noticed something strange. I prefer the black text style, as I said previously, and what I'm noticing is that every time I access a new page, it reverts to the ghastly orange with ads. In fact it happens every time I move pages - even if I move back to an already visited page. This does not happen in IE.

Just thought you ought to know.
