Thanks all! It really has been quite a wait finding out who is through.

I think to get down to the final 23 is great and even if I don't make it the final 10, then hey at least we've come this far!

Well done to everyone who entered, even if you didn't get through to the final 23, well it's actually the final 21 (someone didn't observe the rules! ) I think, regardless who wins the prizes, we all gave Fodens really good backing and it's absolutely fabulous that so many entries were recieved, even if it does mean higher competition

ok Stupid ;-)...

This "Fodens Richardson Award" was announced many months back... Basically a competition, run by Fodens, to compose or arrange a piece of music... The winner gets (and theres 2 winners, one comp, one arr) each £1000, the work published, recorded, etc etc... Quite some prize...
The first shortlist has just been announced a few days ago... this is, to cut 112 entries, down to 21 now... (the band played through ALL the entries)

If you check out Fodens website (www.fodensband.co.uk) you'll find the press releases about it etc...

and for 00.20am thats quite well explained!

Here's some more information about the competion. Congratulations to Roger, Naomi and Simon on getting through to the final eleven!!!!

Concert planned for Richardson Award finalists

The Foden's Richardson Band have announced the final stage of its Richardson Award competition. The band is to perform the final 11 pieces at a concert to be held at the Royal Northern College of Music sometime in April, under the baton of the band's principal conductor Bramwell Tovey.

Project coordinator Alan Wycherley said: "After the overwhelming interest in the competition the band feel very strongly that time should be taken to co-ordinate the availability of the college facility, Bramwell Tovey, the adjudicators and the band themselves, so as to finish off the project with as much thought that went into each and every one of the 122 entries."

The final 11 entries are: E N (paradoxically) (Sachi Uchida), Gambit (Simon Kerwin), Hey Hey (Frode Ryland), Modal Sketches (Naomi Cornish), Remember (Leigh Baker), Stagebury Hill (Richard Taylor), Suite Number 1 (Philip Harper), Clash of the Titans (Roger Thorne), Don Pasquale (Peter Roberts), God Bless the Child (A G Bartelds) and Somewhere Over the Rainbow (Alan Morrison).

N.B. Could all the above composer/arrangers please contact Alan Wycherley at prufung2@aol.com or in writing to give their permission for their entries to be performed at the Final Gala Concert, details of which will be announced as soon as possible.

Copied off BBW!!

Does anyone know what the latest situation is regarding this competition? The latest Press Release (dated 1st February 2004) mentioned a concert that was to take place in April consisting of performances of all the entries on the final short-list. Did this concert take place? If so, when do we expect to hear the winner's name announced?

Naomi McFadyen
06.05.2004, 12:26
No the concert hasn't taken place.

I know someone in the band and asked 2 weeks ago what was happening and was told that they weren't going to have the concert anymore, but just annouce the winners. I was told it was going to be annouced last week- so far, nothing... hopefully we won't be waiting too long...

Maybe someone in the band who's on here can clarify this

Naomi McFadyen
06.05.2004, 17:57
Right, my mum got fed up of waiting ( ) so she emailed the band and they said it'll be announced within the next 3 days... they apologised for the delay

Press Announcement just out!

Richardson Award for Composition

The Foden's Richardson band are pleased to announce the winners of the inaugural Richardson Award for Competition.

After receiving overwhelming support from composer and arrangers from all over Europe, the band's original competition timetable was extended to ensure each entry was given full time and consideration.

The objective of the Richardson Award was to encourage new and established composers and arrangers to arrange new concert repertoire that would be accessible to all listeners.

We are delighted to announce that following a thorough review by the organising committee and members of the Foden's Richardson band, that two winners have been selected in the categories of best original composition and best arrangement. These two pieces will be featured in Foden's concerts over the next 12 months.

Winners of both sections will receive £1,000.00.

The first prize for composition has been awarded to Frode Rydland from Norway for his energetic and exciting concert opener, "Hey Hey".

The first prize for arrangement has been awarded to Alan Morrison for a simply breathtaking arrangement of "Somewhere over the Rainbow".

Congratulations to both Frode and Alan on two very fine submissions.

Finally, the Foden's Richardson Band would like to thank all entrants, finalist and the two eventual prize winners in this inaugural Foden's Richarson Award for Composition. We encourage all those who entered pieces to check for the launch of the next competition and would also invite other composers and arrangers to submit entries. Please check the band's website for further details.

Congratulations to Alan and Frode. I look forward to hearing the pieces. :D

While we're on the subject of Winning Compositions - Don't forget to submit your scores to our very own tMP Composers Competition:
