Sorry Di but you have a couple of wrong dates on there. Section 2 is on Sunday at 10am. I believe section 4 is on the Saturday but I'm not so sure on that one

Di

Ah thanks Michelle, I didn't spot that those had been switched since the original announcement. I'll get the above edited and make sure the prediction dates are changed (will have to wait for hubby to wake up for that though  ) too otherwise we'll have a lot of correct entries for the second section. ;)

Just a reminder to all Championship, First and Second section bands that the clocks go forward on Saturday night. Don't want any mishaps with people turning up late for coaches on such an important day

I'm absolutely gutted that i'm going to miss this competition for the first time since I started playing...tameside contest is on the same day :(.

Really good new area website, and really good to see information being released this far in advance!!

Best of luck to everyone, especially Ellington.

The Yorkshire Area programme has the next 3 dates for their regionals in - wouldn't it be nice to see the same in our area instead of the usual Dolphin Centre bingo of recent years?

A move away from the Dolphin Centre would be even better! I can't believe our area is still so far off. Meh!!

Good luck to Swinton and District in the 4th section.

They've had some tough times with player shortages, lack of a permanent MD - so it'll be interesting to see the results this year.

Ah memories of the Dolphin Centre - an appalling venue for such an important contest.

bigcol
03.03.2008, 16:19
an appalling venue for such an important contest.

Here here, although rather than complain I wonder if we could think of somewhere else that could be put to Alan Hope's committee as a constructive idea?

The only places that comes to mind is the smaller hall at the Sage, or City Hall in Newcastle.

Matt Lawson
03.03.2008, 16:31
With the paltry audiences at the DC in recent years, it'd lose them too much money to hold it at the Sage.

How about the Barbican Centre in York?

Lauradoll
03.03.2008, 16:34
Gala Theatre in Durham?

bigcol
03.03.2008, 16:34
Or Harrogate ;)

Matt Lawson
03.03.2008, 16:37
Wherever it is, it's always going to be a trek for Cumbrian bands.

Perhaps we should build a New Town half way across the A66 and build a concert hall there ;)

On a serious note - somewhere on the A1 corridor is sensible so York/Darlington/Durham/Newcastle.

I honestly think York Barbican Centre is worth looking at.

Ste69
03.03.2008, 17:35
This is more like it - finally some ideas for a new venue - Correct about the Sage though - I'd love to play there but it would be way too expensive. I like the York idea also - Harrogate also more centrally accessible for the Cumbrian bands. There's not a lot else in between before you're dipping into the Yorkshire area at Wetherby!!!

You could all come to Hull - that's not at all out of the way ;)

geordiecolin
03.03.2008, 17:47
Gala Theatre, Durham maybe?

May be some support funding from the County Council as well? I know they have a pot for individual bands within the County, so bands are reasonably high on their agenda.

Steve,

Last bit a fantastic idea. You can rely on our full support.

Most venues in the North East were tried in the olden days and presented problems with 50+ bands' equipment, changing facilities etc. The best venue (IMHO) was the Bede School in Sunderland. Two separate (identical) school halls, with decent acoustics and loads of changing/storage space. It was a shame when that one went for a Burton.
Only the Sage is really big enough, and that's WAY out of our financial league.:frown:

So we'll just have to put up with aerobics classes and roller disco which share our contest hall again.

ekimmort
03.03.2008, 22:31
Very interesting comments. When the change of date was forced upon us I suggested to Mr Hope that we should stick with the original date and change the venue preferebly one with decent accustics, instead of the Dolphin Centre sports hall.
I was informed that NO ONE HAD EVER COMPLAINED about the Dolphin Centre.

geordiecolin
04.03.2008, 14:04
No complaint should be necessary, given that anybody with an amount of musical knowledge can tell that the Dolphin Centre is a poor acoustic for brass, especially for a contest.

My main gripe is that I've been contesting there since I was 9 and I've still not seen a single dolphin!

GC from what I remember the Gala is quite small but it certainly has that 'feel' that would make a contest seem special. Very good parking too.

What about Peterlee Leisure Centre ;)

imthemaddude
04.03.2008, 17:15
To be honest most of the contests in the north east are in a sports hall and so I would have thought the consistency in acoustic would be a good thing. It was good enough for the big boys at Spenny for Brass in Concert for many years.

Chunky
04.03.2008, 17:39
Here in the L & SC we play in a sports hall most years.

Surely if you play in the same hall year in year out you can adapt your performances accordingly!

Its when your chair is hanging over a gap in the stage so you dont want to breathe too much incase it wobbles and falls. Or the walk way on to the stage that looks like something from starlight express. I cant wait!!

What about Peterlee Leisure Centre ;)

It's years ago now, but I have it filed away in my memory as being lousy - I remember playing in garish yellow sodium lighting there, and with new glasses on I nearly fell of the makeshift stage coming off after playing as I couldn't see a thing! Constant stink of chlorine too!

I can't wait - I'm looking forward to the 4barsrest predictions, not only are they fun but once they are published you know that you are nearly there. Our section is wide open and should be one of the more interesting NOE sections of the weekend.

Despite the negative publicity I think Four Cities is a good 4th section test piece and it has been fun to work on. No-one has complained too much in band, our sop player even gets the coffees in around movement 2-3 thus making the most of her bars rest.

So - to stave off the boredom of having to wait for springtime to officially arrive before our area, I'm having my own predictions competition.

That is, to predict what 4BR will predict in their previews next week - Yes!!! That's how bored I am this morning.

Bear in mind this has nothing to do with the day itself - and more to do with what 4BR will say is going to happen.

I'll go first.

Champ section: they'll go for the old favourites.

1, Reg Vardy
2, Fishburn
3, EYMS
4, Tavistock CLS
5, Harrogate
6, Greggs

DH - Felling

My band won't win, we've spent the bribe money on booze.

I've heard a rumour that the organisers want to open the geographical eligibility for this area even further next year by admitting bands from the Normandy and Brittany areas. The manager of the Pennyweight is said to be very excited as he has some surplus cases of burgundy and boxes of gitanes in his cellar.

I hate area contests. I know that it's necessary but there's something a bit strange about playing in a cavernous room where half the audience listen to the same piece 10 times and the other half are bandsmen wishing bad luck & mistakes on you.

Too many negative vibes for my taste, give me a park job or decent concert any day.

I love playing in a brass band but not everyone is as enthused with the area as you are. I put up with the ****, the frustration, the extra rehearsals, the bitching, the monotony, the politics, the inclusive snobbery, the geekiness, the (sometimes) questionable results, and the unwanted intrusion into my personal life for the following reasons:

- The area contest means so much to the other people in my band and bandsmen in general, and that to me is more important than my personal feelings.

- It allows me to remain in a band and pursue far more enjoyable & rewarding banding activities for the rest of the time like playing a varied musical programme & entertaining people at concerts & entertainment contests.

- It gives bands the chance to wipe the smiles off the smug faces of those people who have nothing better to do than slag off other bands. For those who do, we only like to get together & make music not plan terrorist activities, take a valium or get a girlfriend or something.

- A pint after you've played tastes so much better than a pint at any other time or place, doesn't it?

Right, that's my rant over. The intense week starts here. Best of luck everyone and I hope that you all have an enjoyable day.

I'm quite impressed this year - perhaps its because every other region has finished that they can spend a bit more time researching but the write ups for each band are positive and a generally good read.

I like the Bearpark summary:

"’The band that makes the North East Rock!’ – according to their website that is, returns this year hoping to improve on the disappointing result of 10th a year ago.

The Esh Band was originally formed in 1950 and joined forces with Bearpark in 1979, but its not clear from which date they started the rock and roll. Hopefully on Saturday night we may find out if they can really live up to their proud boast! "

I was under the impression that the regional boundaries were set and not a 'choice'.

Mrs Fruity
28.03.2008, 18:58
There was some controversy when the boundaries were changed aroung 12 (?) years ago. I think they're set now, but at the time several bands applied to be part of the Northern Area instead of Yorkshire. I may be wrong, and I'm sure someone will let me know...

The changes to the regional boundaries were agreed by the NCC and Ann-Marie Sizer.

Bands could not apply to compete in the region of their choice - they didn't have a choice - they had to compete in the new regions.

Consequently some bands that had previously competed in Yorkshire region found themselves competing in the North region. Incurring much longer travel times and expense.

So, it has absolutely nothing to do with the Northern Area being just a 'tad' easier to qualify for the National Finals than the Yorkshire Area....Good..

So, it has absolutely nothing to do with the Northern Area being just a 'tad' easier to qualify for the National Finals than the Yorkshire Area....Good..

I think it may have had more to do with bolstering the number of bands in the North area.

At the time some bands may have agreed with the changes thinking it easier to qualify in the North area than Yorkshire but I think that may be a misconception. The proof would be in the subsequent results.

How many of the bands who previously competed in the Yorkshire area and now compete in the North have qualified since the changes ?

I don't know - does anyone else ?

Richard Wilton is a really good friend of mine and I wouldn't think for one minute that he would want the band portrayed in this image you think amusing. Your comments undoubtedly will/are taking the shine off your no doubt worthy victory which is a real shame. If you think that you are been clever/funny with your comments then you are not, trust me.

Being a poor winner says nothing for all the hard work put in by all the other competing bands.

Ps... well done Richard on the victory, will give you a call in next few days matey!

Too true. I missed their performance unfortunately but I know of at least 2 people who went in hoping to see them fall flat on their faces after reading the arrogant comments in this thread. The person who posted them has done nothing to win friends for the band. I'm sure though that the comments of this one person do not reflect the opinions of the rest of the band. Congratulations on what I hear was a worthy victory.

Oh yes South Millford, yet another band that chooses to travel 62 miles to Darlington instead of 30 miles to Bradford for a contest...I wonder why?

South Milford can't decide which area they play in, andeven if they did they would have cleared the table like they did in Darlington yesterday. They kick ass really well. So watch them, they are truly up and coming.

Can I just say that I really enjoyed the South Milford performance yesterday, they really were worthy winners of the section and should do well in several sections higher. The standard in the section was much higher than I thought it would have been and I really enjoyed the piece too. I had a lovely afternoon yesterday!

Getting ready to head off to Darlo again now, hope I've remembered everything this time.........

I don't think I've quite ever read anything quite like the gloating on this thread!

Once you've come off your South Milford coloured soapbox, perhaps a little word of congratulations to the other twelve bands in the section who bust their b******s to get to Darlington and put a performance on.

Yes, you won by 3 points, and I wasn't there so presume it was justified, but think about the other bandsmen on here who are reading comments like "If we hadn't turned up, we'd still have come 2nd".

My ex band Swinton for example, I'm incredibly proud of them. They've got a very very young band and came back to Darlington this year after a year off, and to come 8th out of 13 is a great result for them.

So before whisking away on the South Milford honeymoon after your Darlington love-in, I suggest a brief moment to remember that some bands can go home proud even if they don't have a trophy or any prize money in tow.

I can't comment on SMB is I didn't hear them play (they were on before us), but what I will say is that the comments we recieved from the adjudicator were in my opinion beyond belief. Yes he's entitled to his opinion in that we didn't play well etc, and that's fair enough (I think we did play quite well but that doesn't matter). What I expected from the adjuducators comments was constructive critisism (as he said he'd given) well, what contructive critisism? There was none, the band was completely slated. It's not sour grapes talking here but how are bands supposed to get better if that's what happens?

I don't know which band Karen1977 is referring to, and obviously haven't seen their remarks, but I feel I need to defend Mr Hardy a bit.

The band I was conducting came 8th and were, justifiably, happy with their performance on stage. (We were 3 brass players and one shed short of a full load, so weren't realistically expecting prizes.)

The remarks were the type of thing I've been used to in the top section as a player, in that, they pointed out the players/sections throughout the performance where we had lost points; and I had to agree with everything that he said (including the bits aimed at me).

Taken in the wrong context they can read like a slating, but, read as I believe they were meant, they highlight all areas of that particular performance that could/should be improved upon and are, therefore constructive.

Adjudicating will (I hope) never become an exact science (there are too many wonderfully subtle nuances in music for it ever to be pinned down in such a way) and no adjudicator has the time to write a detailed critique and give helpful suggestions on how to improve. That's why I like this style of remark - to the point - "these are the reasons I deducted points" - and now it's up to the MD and the band to acknowledge these particular weaknesses and work forward to improve.

another two pennorth.

Sud.

BTW...congrats to my good mate Richard Wilton and his crew on an excellent win.

Matt, I will forgive you just about anything for calling me young;) Seriously though I'm incredibly proud of all our players and grateful to Nigel for the amount of work he has put in to enable us actually to geet to Darlington this year - there were times when I thought it just wouldn't happen!

In my opinion Colin Hardy's remarks were not a true reflection of my band's performance. This has made a lot of people upset and disillusioned with attending contests.

I don't wish take away the shine from any other band in the 4th section, I hope that you feel that you were treated fairly. In future I do not intend to waste my time by taking part in this charade again.

I thought our remarks (Marske) reflected our performance fairly. Mr Hardy pointed out where we went wrong - nothing we didn't already know when we came off stage - but also gave some praise for what we got right.

I'd just like to say a massive thanks to our MD, Alun Prest, for all the hard work he put in with the band - it's just a shame a few nerves and too much hanging around got in the way a little of us showing what we really can do.

Well done to all the bands who took part, especially the top 3. To all those who didn't, there's always next year. Good luck to SMB and Kirby Lonsdale at Harrogate.

I'm pleased with our 6th, we were never going to win but we did ourselves proud and before the contest were probably most people's last placed band, so to beat 2 bands was satisfying and not mention the band's best contest result possibly since those British Open winning days of the early 1900s!!

This is just a quick post to say well done to all who competed in the contest over the weekend, and a special word for Barrow Concert Band in the Third Section, who came 4th despite 4barsrest having us down as 7th or 8th in their predictions. (One word guys - Hah! ;-)

I've been with Barrow for nearly 21 years, and we've seen some serious ups and downs, we've seen bands come and go, and through out it all we've stuck with it! We've been up and down the sections, and hopefully on the up again! We've got a brilliant bunch of players, and a junior band who impressed me with their musical ability one rehearsal a week or so ago.

So this is just to say well done to Barrow in particular for all the work we did over the last few weeks on a really good piece of music, and thanks for putting up with me, my noise and violently yellow drum kit!

Also to say well done to Barton Town Band for their result in the Second Section. It's great that we have two really good bands close together geographically in an area where bands are a little scarce.

Ha I am loving the pic Notebook- total treat!

What a great weekend, banding in the North East really is alive and kicking!

So many highlights for me-
1) South Milford's performance- the first time I'd heard the piece and the first performance I heard at the contest. Good luck at Harrogate!

2) The band after South Milford- Chester le Street, watching the kids from my school (and a few older bodies!!) taking to the stage and giving it their all made me so proud.

3) Catching up with people from home/ Mancs/ here all in the one place- too many people and not enough time.

4) Winning. Yey. It's always good!!

But the highlight of the weekend for me was when they announced Felling third. It honestly was a fantastic result for such a hardworking, friendly bunch of people. Pure class.
