I hope Keegan does well at Newcastle, they deserve it, but is he the right man for the job (again?) Plus, will they give the man time to build a team worthy of what Newcastle deserve.........we'll wait and see!
What an excellent appointment!! I couldn't be more happy

Is he still there? Must be at least 12 hrs since he was appointed... ;)
That'll end in tears (again)
My thoughts exactly. I hope he does well and he is a bit of character, but what was he thinking. He should have just accepted the position 'till the end of the season and seen how it went. A championiship promotion manager is about the limit of his expertise (which might be handy). Can't see Newcastle getting into the European competition qualification places in the premiership. Can we add a poll to this thread as to how long we expect him to last, selections would be end of 2008 season, christmas 2008, end of 2009 season, that should do it. It's going to be the football equivalent of car crash TV.

Why do they deserve it? The team with the most over-inflated opinion of themselves in the country.
The team with the most over-inflated opinion of themselves in the country.............apart from Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool - you forgot to add! ;)

I'd love it, absolutely love it, if he got sacked before the end of the season.
I know, we can't find a manager so we'll go back in time and get a legend from a few years ago to take over. What can go wrong? Well, if the Manchester United model is anything to go by, relegation to the Championship (it was the second division then for all you history buffs) and a depressingly long time in the football wilderness. Since Newcastle have already achieved this, what have they got to lose?

I get the feeling though that any mackem who mocks this appointment does it whilst feeling a little uneasily, cos for all they can mock, we were pretty damn good last time round under KK (unlike the comparable scumderland team of that era) and I can't believe there's not the tiniest concern that this, once again, might just turn out to be an inspired appointment!

Oh be quiet Daniel.
If nothing else, we deserve something good to watch, not many teams would have taken 4000 - 5000 away to Blackburn or Wigan to watch the garbage churned out under Allardyce.

As an outsider I think it's great and am looking forward to seeing some exciting football from Newcastle again.
as long as he wins the next three games, he'll make it to the end of the season!!
Reckon we need a few Columbian strikers, a Belgian centre back and a Rob Lee type midfielder and we'll be sorted!
Not too much to ask then!!!

What do Newcastle fans think of the appointment of Dennis Wise as Director of Football? Seems a bit strange to me - he's a good coach/manager yes, but Director of Football?? Is he possibly being put in place as the next manager?

Personally i would have quite liked to have seen Chris Coleman come in as assistant manager then take over in a few years time. That said Wise is for me an odd choice. Not sure why he wanted the job either (apart from the MASSIVE pay rise).
Isnt it also amazing that had Newcastle lost consecutive games 3 nil to the Arsenal under Allardyce he would have been booed out of the ground yet Keegan is still cheered as the saviour - Football fans eh!
Unlucky to have to play Arsenal twice in 4 days, not the best start for Keegans revolution. As long as we dont get relegated this season (!) i think we can target next season for Uefa cup etc then go from there.

Home games against Reading, Fulham and the mackems to come... win 2 of those and we're safe.

I personally don't think Newcastle will go down, but they would be daft to think it cannot happen. I personally have no axe to grind with Newcastle but they do strike me as a club which feels they have a right to success....you have to earn it. In my experience, Newcastle Utd fans are great when it's going well, but the 'loyalist football supporters the world has ever had' (as they humbly call themselves) are quick to get on their backs when it's not.
I heard quite a funny comment the other day about Kevin Keegan "Geordies call him Messiah. I get what they mean: he giveth premiership football and now he taketh away". Again, I don't think it will happen, but with trips to Anfield and Birmingham in the next few games...they could be in the bottom three soon and then anything can happen.

I've consulted Mystic Mog, and I can reveal that.....
the top 4 will be United, Arsenal, Chelsea (within 4 points of each other) and Liverpool (about 10 points back)
Spurs and Everton will qualify for the UEFA Cup
Aston Villa will be in the Intertoto Cup
Derby will have their relegation confirmed on the weekend commencing 5th April
The other two relegation spots will go down to the wire and will be......
....
Fulham and Newcastle after Reading win away at Derby on the last day of the season.

I've said it before and it's worth saying again. If you look at the team we can put on the pitch, we're too good to go down....
...but nobody is EVER too good to go down.
Ironically, if we do stay up, it'll be the points Allardyce got us that'll keep us up.

You say that it strikes you that we feel we have a right to success....
On what basis are you so struck?? Have you been to St James' recently or is this view on the basis of the largely southern based gutter press??
As you say, we have no right to success, but I would defy any supporters to put up with the way the club was run under Fat Freddy and the way we played under Sam Allardyce, Graeme Souness and Ruud Gullit without voicing an opinion...
As for the old "loyalist football supporters thing", I would have thought the loyalty would be to the club as opposed to the current occupiers of the shirts... Surely attending a game and making your feelings known vocally is more loyal than not attending at all a la Middlesbrough..??

Sorry, yawn wasn't directed at yourself, more at the press once again trying to make a story out of nothing.

Here's the "story" (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/sport/football.html?in_article_id=533592&in_page_id=1779)
Absolutely nothing concrete in it, just seems to be s**t stirring. In fact the only direct quotes of those of Chris Mort, in support of Keegan.
Just illustrates my earlier point about the southern based gutter press!
So in answer to the original question, no, I don't think Keegan will go if we lose the next 2 games. Don't get me wrong we need to the win these games and they may well have a decisive outcome upon our Premier League status, but Keegan's immediate future won't be decided by them and don't believe there's any evidence to suggest they will.

Of course you're allowed to discuss it. The problem is that scarecely a week goes by without a 'crisis' headline of some sort floating around at St Jim's.
Us magpie fans have become used to the jeremiahs at the sports department predicting doom for us. It's become a recurrent theme becuase of our yo-yo form over recent years and the crazy management merry-go-round we've endured.
Generally, the press are the LAST people to know what's going to happen at st jim's. Whenever a black and white striped bombshell drops, it's as much of a surprise to them as it is to the rest of us, and most of the time, they know no more than we do!!
It just seems to be the way things happen at newcastle. The rumour mill very rarely throws up anything that turns out to be concrete. It might be true in this case, who knows? But where the geordies are concerned, my advice would be to believe what you see, not what you read.

Its the press stirring things up. But, I think, underneath it all, it doesnt look very promising for Keegan at the moment. Especially if we loose the next two matches. Then I think, his position at the club, will be rather unstable.

I think you're right. I mean, if we do lose the next two matches, championship football next year is a very real danger.
It simply HAS to be three points against Birmingham tonight. Anything else isn't acceptable. But I don't think Keegan will be canned if we go down.

Simon Presham, yes i think your right on that one. Keegan has always been a very good motivator.
When you look at the whole team, they are not really all that bad on paper. they just need someone to poin t them in the right direction, and \i think Keegan is still the man for it, but he has got to be pretty sharp about the situation.

S'alright Dyl. With no domestic trophy since 1955 and no trophy at all since 1976, we're kinda used to not winning them by now. ;)
Whole of Tyneside breathes massive sigh of relief. (And a few of us in various other parts of the country too) Hopefully now the curse is broken, like the london hoodoo that stopped us winning there for 40-odd games. Once that'd gone, everyone forgot it and it ceased to be an issue.
