I thought this was going to be the subject of DavePayn's strange names thread, so I'll ask instead!
I had a friend who called her euph Esmerelda, and I had a Bartholemew baritone whern I was at school - it seemed like a good idea at the time!!! (Oh, and I called my french horn "that f*******ing thing", but I don't think that counts!)

So am I the only nutter?

I had a friend who called her euph Esmerelda,

OMG! Am I your friend? Thats the name of my euph! I have Archibald the trombone.

My old valve trombone was Weebl, and my very first euph was Wesley. :D

Oh, and how come you lot are admitting to naming your instrument, but only 1 person has answered yes in the poll? Be a proud nutter!

I've not named my horn but I do think of her as a slightly raddled, gin-soaked old tart, you know the one that sits on a bar stool in the pub wearing fishnets and leather mini and calls all the young men "handsome", where the value of young is <45. Croaky voice from years of cheap whisky and fags and tends to get maudlin at closing time.
No, wait, that's me.

most of the names that my trom gets called are unprintable. You know, the names you use when for no apparent reason it splits a note, gets the slide in the wrong position or fluffs a tricky run. :)

LEmme see.....

My EEb Is Bessie (Besson Sovereign)
My BBb was Bertha (BIG BERTHA to you!!)
My Trumpet is Dougall (the Bugel)
My Clarinet is Squeaky (obviously)
and I used to say that when I bought a bass trombone, I'd name it after my music teacher, Mr Bach-Er (his name was Barker, but at the time I thought Bach Trombones were the ant's pants)

Never named the eupho when I had it, but when the bands new Sov cornet was acting up while it was brand new, I had it testing it @ work, and my students (who all knew I named my stuff) asked what it was called.....

Mr Costs-ME-a-lot-of-Money!!!!!!!

I'm sure this topics been done before.... oh well....

My Schilke doesn't have a name (though perhaps it should after all its been through this year) but my spare is called "Old Bob" cause it was destined for the factory bin but got saved and rebuilt with od bits'n'bobs (It's an old style sovereign with the tuning slide on the bell pipe).

I think the new one should be called "Lucky" cause it's lucky it's still around! (especially after having extensive repair work after this years regionals).

Hadn't really given this much thought...

I have been referring to it since I've had it as 'El Cheapo' though. I think after I finally cave in and send it off to the repair shop to have the valve bores reamed I'll start calling it 'The Money Pit.'

Beats me - I don't think I'll call it anything unless it just comes to me sometime. I'll probably have to come up with a name fit for a super-model... since all it does is sit there and look pretty at the moment.

Can't say that I have named my instrument. I haven't stayed with any one instrument for long enough to begin an intense relationship with it like that!

In my band we have two old Imperial basses, one called Bertie and one called Bertha. My wife played Bertha for many a year, and Bertie was sadly sat in his case. Amazingly though, every time they are brought out to play, they need very little grease/ oil to get up and running!

If only we could say the same for 1990s sovreigns (sp?)!!

I've always found that if I name an instrument it plays better - I named the first flute I had but not the next one, and I just didn't seem to get on with it as well :( .

I don't name any percussion though - as it's shared I've never been able to build up a good enough relationship with any particular instrument to justify naming it as my own.

When I was at school a 1000 years ago I named my battered junior Eb Bass Sylvia after a poor girl who was currently having to suffer my unwanted attentions.
Eyebrows would be raised in conversations when I would refer to "Polishing Sylvia" or "Practicing with Sylvia" - you can imagine some of my other references !!
I thought it was funny - she did not.
I never made any progress with Sylvia whatsoever !!!

akwarose

sylvia the instrument or sylvia the person?

sylvia the instrument or sylvia the person?

At least I progressed some way with Sylvia the instrument, but with Sylvia the person my efforts gained no reward whatsoever - and I tried harder with her, but at least I ended up with something to cuddle and practice on for the next 43 years (As well as Mrs Wilx !!)

 I've had my horn for about 14 years & so "he" has to have a name. Used to have an imperial called "Henry" & now I've got a sov, its "Horatio" cos he's posh!! Or "H" for short, & now "HC" for reasons I cannot disclose!! ;)

Sad thing is, my case has a name....."Shell" given to it by a couple of friends

Was it???

Oh dear.

I've been calling it Barry for so long I'd better keep it as Barry now, otherwise it'll just get confused and suffer severe psychological trauma and start messing up in contests.

ha! i'm sure kids called number 1 and number 2 wouldn't be picked on lol!

i think it's even harder for kids, i mean they are shaped somewhat by their name... imagine being called theodore, you'd grow up a bit odd i think. but with instruments, we get them fully formed, and we should be able to match the name to them as they are :)

speaking of which, neil glynn just told me off for thinking my euph is female (Betsy)... what about Esmerelda?!
