Some very nice Eb Bass parts Pete, and the trombones might have a little fun as well.

I've just checked www.kapitol.co.uk (http://www.kapitol.co.uk) and they have listed all the test pieces so must be legit.

IMHO Victorian Snapshots - On Ratcliff Highway is a wonderful piece of music.

Written for the centenary of Salvation Army bands in 1978, On Ratcliff Highway was premiered by The International Staff Band (and simultaneously by Melbourne Staff Band in another venue).
It was inspired by a sketch on the front page of a copy of The War Cry from 1886 which depicted the Whitechapel Salvation Army band marching through the notorious highway, surrounded by crowds, with the masts of ships seen beyond the East London slums.

I am sure conductors and players will have great fun with this music, picking out all the folk tunes of the day which are included. There's also a touch of the 'Charles Ives' when the Salvation Army Band 'collides' with the Skeleton Army!

I've never heard of the first section piece. Of all of the rumours I heard this was never one of them (for a change, lol). I've just ordered my copy of essays, I can't Wait!!!!

Don't know any of the others but I agree that the 1st section piece is fantastic and an inspired choice.

We didn't qualify, so I am now totally gutted. If there are any 1st section bands out there who are in need of a conductor either for the contest or for some preparation work...! ;)

I love the first section piece. So clever when the two groups are fighting it out near the end! Wow, what a choice. I was contemplating going to London this year, but now I'd rather go to Harrogate!!!

Come on - any opinions on the 2nd Section piece? Someone must have played it / heard t. Maybe Mr Barry himself would like to let us know all about it?!?

Take it it's in three movements?
Any good 'tunes' in it?
Solo work?

Cheers

That's cos he is a very well connected man! After all, 2 of his friends are probably as powerful in the BB world as Ronnie and Reggie Kray were in the underworld!!

Solos right across the band - including BBb ;) - and needing players who can hold their nerve! It will be interesting to see how the conductors approach it, as I've heard various interpretations since the premiere in 1978: Stephen Cobb's most recent rendition was very convincing, balancing the various sections and producing something very Ivesian.

Looking forward to first run through "Imperium" on Sunday evening - a question before then from our percussionists - a lot to do, and how many of them will the piece require?

Looking forward to first run through "Imperium" on Sunday evening - a question before then from our percussionists - a lot to do, and how many of them will the piece require?

Percussion requirements:-
Timpani:- Three timpani.
Percussion 1:- Suspended Cymbal, Large Tom, Snare Drum.
Percussion 2:- Bass Drum, Suspended Cymbal, Tam, Tam, Glockenspiel, Tambourine.

Ours don't know yet.

Did a bit of digging on "Imperium" - apparently it's based on the Thomas Harris book of the same name, about Cicero's rise to power in Rome from obscurity.

Like the 1st section piece, looking forward to listening to a few of those.

I've actually heard it's based on the 4 part book series Emperor by Con Iggulden. Someone I know spoke to the composer and he told him that. Ran through it Monday night, great piece but is going to be a challenge to a lot of bands. Same pressure on the tenor horn player like the area piece as the 2nd movement starts four bars in 6/4 on their own!!!!
