No Score or Music Available

Good opening bars and a well rounded sound. Horn and bari not together before C. More rythmn need to make the music flow at C. Good dynamic levels observed with a solid tambourine and horn section at E. Cornets - tuning at F. Band seems to be overblowing! farr too loud for ff. Tuning to end of movement distracts.

Good solo trom to open the music, although enesmble don't always play together. J Tempo is too slow for music to flow, although cornet soloist copes admirably. K. Good overall ensemble sounds (well done sop). L Dynamic levels a little overcooked. nice accel with good rythmic percussion into M. Euph and Baris, have tuning problems but the music flows well, with a good cornet accompaniment. P Well done Glock. Q accented quavers too short. R. Nice cornet sounds again with some good balanced ensemble playing. Good meno moso into Allegro.

Good rythmical playing from cornets and percussion. Horns and Bari a bit to 'heavy' but generaly some good playing throughout. Good muted cornets - in tune! well done. V Good cornet solo again with sympathetic accompaniment.

DS. Band are anticipating the ending and have lost a little control with tempos and dynamics. Coda good bass and excellent last bar. A good performance well done.

We have offered our opinion of the bands performance based on the music, and on what we hear; and not on the technicalities of notes and other musical markings in the score etc.

Please don't be offended if you don't agree with what we write. This will simply be a combination of a report of our opinions on how we felt the performance went on the day, and of what's happening at the contest.

Please feel free to add your comments and your scores based on what you heard but please remember to keep these constructive and within the spirit of tMP and our guidelines. :)

I don't think that's a nice comment at all, Jamie. How do you know what the band's objectives for the day was? If they're happy and have had a good day out, who are you to critise? I'd suggest you think a little before making comments like that - and perhaps imagine how you'd feel if a similar thing was said towards you?

I don't think that a contest is all about the playing! You go there to have fun win or lose or draw!! And personally myself I think that was an unfair comment to make!

I have to agree with Jamie in principal on this one, just because you have had a good day out DOESN'T mean that you have played well, BUT
the band may have met their expectations for the day ie play to the best of their ability and have a good day out.

However, if band members make comments like " still should have got top three definatly" then surely it's okay for someone else to comment to the contrary as this is a forum for opinions.

Perhaps Jamie could have worded it better but he is entitled to his opinion. Sorry.

Yes reading back i could of worded it a lot better, probs to do with the bottle of rose wine i just drank, anyway what i ment to say was:
just becoz uve had a good day out doesnt mean that you've played well, but, i didn't hear the band so i cant base judgement! Hope thats a little nicer!

Thanks for saying that Jamie, but I have to say despite the tone you use in your comments... they actually don't make much sense anyway! There is not necessarily an absolute correlation between 'playing well' and 'having a good day', so you may as well make statements such as... "just because you have cool new uniforms doesn't mean you played well", or... "just because the sun was shining doesn't mean you played well". That argument doesn't stack up and makes no sense at all.

Conversely, a band could play well but for whatever reasons have a dreadful day out.

To those who commented earlier in the thread that this is a forum and such opinions should be allowed... yes of course this is a forum and we do allow such opinions to be voiced. What goes totally against our policies and what we stand for are unfounded/unjustified criticisms, and any points made that are totally invalid and somewhat offensive. In my opinion, Jamie's point is (1) invalid, (2) makes no sense at all, and (3) could easily be perceived by many (especially those in Newport band) as was somewhat offensive.
