Good to see the sections evened out a bit better this year.

Hopefully more bands will enter the second section this year. Shame to see that there were only 5 last year
I just want to wish in advance my baritone buddy and mate, Helen, and her band Dunston Silver all the best for the 4th Section contest. You will play great i am sure:biggrin:
Lol while i am at it i want to wish another baritone buddy and mate Laura and her band Reg Vardy all the best for their contest:biggrin: Possibly another win on the cards??? hehe

Have Barnard Castle band packed in again?
After the nationals last year I left Barney for other things then soon after other members started going too.
It's a great shame that they're not contesting this year especially after fighting so hard for the promotion to the 3rd section.
Brass Banding is a dying breed in the north east and getting bums on seats it proving difficult as you're probably well aware.
Good Luck Barney, hope to see you up on the stage soon!
Whats happened to BHK then?
Whats happened to BHK then?
Horden in their current guise folded around the start of this year. The jungle drums are full of talk of them reforming at a lower section or amalgamating with another band, but officially they are no more.

All the best for the contest to everyone, especially Ellington  , I hear its going well John.
I might be up for the contest but i'm not sure, but if not i'll be a boc and glued to my computer waiting for the results
As for Col talking rubbish, what do you expect he's from Wylam out in the sticks with the sheep :p
Hi Andy,
its going OK. I think that everyone will play The Wayfarer so its going to be down to interpretation and the conductor bringing out the music from the piece. I think that Alan fernie is doing that with us so here's hoping for a good result on the 18th.

Shut it Newbiggin boy. Prudhoe-by-the-Sea more like.... ;)
Yeah best of luck all, I'll see you all in the bar (trying to avoid a repeat of last year's sticker fight!).
Does anyone know if they've finished "doing up" the Dolphin Centre yet? Its bad enough being subjected to the place on an annual basis anyway but it being a building site makes it even worse!

Why do people persist in spreading this kind of rubbish about, probably best to ignore idle gossip me thinks. BHK Horden has folded (making a few people happy!) The band will not be reforming or amalgamating with anyone. End of story

I'm sure I'm not the only one who finds your posts difficult to read.

I was surprised at the points given in the Championship section. 4barsrest have argued that they are pointless but in this instance the adjudicator was Alan Morrison i.e. the chap who proposed points banding/ grading for the various sections. The same adjudicator gave the winning first section band the same points as third place in the Championship section! Will we have another 4barsrest slating the standard of bands in the top section a in the West of England?
It'll be interesting to see the comments on this section.

Well done Felling Band on winning the first section for the second consecutive year (first time it's happened in the North). The band put in weeks of hard work and gave the best performance they possibly could on stage.
Also congratulations to Lockwood who will be joining us in Harrogate to repesent the North at the National Finals, well done lads and lasses
Only just got back from "up north" after being a dirty stopout for the night so I'm just going to say well done to everyone at EYMS - a solid effort in the end and a well deserved return to form:clap:
See you all in London

****** is all I'll say. Well done the winners and 2nd on what was a proper test piece.
By my reckoning this is the 3rd section table now. Not sure if the top 3 are going to go up, and it looks like we've been saved relegation by a technicality (Spenny are already demoted due to non-contesting for 2 years). :(
Barton Town 11.5
Billingham Silver 13
Hetton Silver 13
Stape Silver 14
Barrow Concert 15.5
Carlisle St.Stephens 17
Ripon City 17
Barnard Castle 18.5
Spennymoor Town 18.5
Five Rivers Brass 19.5
Flimby Saxhorn 21.5
According to the tables Billingham were already on 13 so they are now on 16 points. so it should be Barton and Hetton who go up. I agree with you on all the other points though

Yes we'd have been last in Wales hahahahaha -and we probably wouldn't have even made the championship section in London and Southern Counties -BUT we still won and ta Laura the champagne was FAB!!!! Well played everyone!!!!!!!!!     And we actually played quite well you know...
I'm not having a go. You won. Well done for that - I'm sure you're delighted. It was just the points comparison between first and top section. As for comparison to other regions, those were different adjudicators and that wasn't the point I was making.

I didn't think you were having a go. I agree about the points comparison - and "look at the differences between the areas" was my point. My husband thinks we should have one adjudicator, or team of adjudicators who do one section each in all the areas, then the points would be standardised. That's another can of worms, of course, because then you'd have one person's idea of what a brass band should sound like as the "norm" for a set number of years, etc. But I can see his point, and yours.

Well done Mrs Fruity and all at Reg Vardy......it must have been the battering you got off us "trainees" a few months back on Isaiah.
Look forward to seeing you all again next Sunday....brace yourselves for another battering on St. Magnus.

PS. Great effort all me old muckas at EYMS....back where you belong.

Anyone know how many bands get promoted/relegated from each section? Is it two up/two down?
michellegarbutt
19.03.2007, 22:52
if theres 10 bands or less registered in a section 1 goes up and 1 goes down. More than 10, 2 go up and 2 go down. This is all subject to appeal and n the case of ties when 2 are tied the extra one goes up but I don't know about demotion

By my reckoning, Felling and Westoe go up from the 1st.
Houghton, Barrow and Langbaurgh go down.
Think Kirkbymoorside go down from Champs?

Anyway back on topic... What did everyone think of the new look Dolphin Centre? Certainly an improvement, but I thought the new (old) bar was a bit sterile.

dont seem to remember the bar, had been to the hole in the wall before that!
I didnt like the fact there was only one toilet downstairs. other then that it was alreet. an improvement on last year anyway!!
Lauradoll
21.03.2007, 08:54
There were 2 loos downstairs, one just outside the bar and one in the bar towards the back.
I thought the venue (bar) was a massive improvement but still think it's ridiculous we have to play in a sports hall.
Thats what I got....
(I know, I'm sad, but I CAN'T WALK AND I'M BORED!!!!)
Wow sixy you really do have a lot of time on your hands don't you?
Thanks for publishing your work - makes life a lot clearer now, although I suspect the final version may change due to appeals etc.

Agreed - its a shame they put all the effort into everything else on the outside of it but then left that Hall just as it is. But then I guess we're only there for a weekend and the rest of the time it serves its purpose perfectly. I mean they're not going to make it more acoustically appealealing just for us when its usually full of 5-a-siders and badminton types.
But yes - loved the bar - especially after the results!!!!
The official gradings tables have been posted at http://www.er.band.btinternet.co.uk/nebbc/gradings2007.htm by the looks of things. Dunno how final this is.

Spoke to Alan Hope.
They have been taken off as they were put on by accident. Someone pressed the button a little too early!
The tables are not official until June. There is a meeting in May, and appeals will be held in June when the final gradings will be published.
