What do you think the attendances will be like in the audience this year?
In years gone by they have been dissapointing especially for the lower section bands, theres a few reasons for this:
ticket prices
selection of pieces
quality of bands
thats just 3 of them, I'd say that the fact that the players have to pay full price is pretty disgusting considering we are the people providing the entertainment, surely there could be a special price for the players and MD's, I know they have to make money at these jobs but its a scam really that the people providing the entertainment have to pay full price to hear everyone else.
selection of pieces I can't comment on as I havn't heard any of the others besides prelude and jubilate, which i'll be honest isn't massivly enspiring for me, some nice bits in it but overall Iv'e heard better 3rd section pieces in the past, What does everyone think of the pieces?, are they good enough or nice enough pieces to attract the big supporting audiences for the bands who have worked so hard in january and february?
quality of bands isn't usually an issue in the yorkshire area, the champ has some of the best bands in the uk, in recent years the 1st section has much improved, the 2nd section seem to have struggled a little bit on recent pieces, the 3rd section has slowly improved but again the pieces in recent years have proved to be strong tests for them, and in the 4th section there have been some very promising bands coming through, including some who have gone right up the sections, and a couple who look as if they could be capable of doing the same, I think the 4th section could be very closely contested this year though, I dont think theres any band who sticks out this year.
Looking forward to having a go with the prediction this year, hope you guys are doing OK with getting it up and running, couldn't we do an unofficial 1 where we can predict the top 6 insted of the top 3 just while we wait for the official 1?
Good luck to everyone competing, although I'm hoping that it won't be down to luck that gives the band the win, it should be down to who performs the best on the day!

I'm really looking forward to it, 1st section is going to be great, anyone could win! Though saying that if all bands play to form I think Pennine will be the band to beat. Good luck all.

Watch out for Skelmanthorpe - a band full of confidence at the moment, and a nice bunch of folk to boot! Think they will be up there or roundabouts when the results are read out...

I thought that if you competed on Saturday, you could stay and listen to the other section as a bandsman for free and that you got a reduced fee for the contest on following day? Sure this was announced last year, unless things have changed this year?
Played the testpieces for fourth, third and first sections and can honestly say that I think they're some of the best pieces chosen in recent years. Phil Wilby's piece The Seasons is a wonderful piece to rehearse and should provide a good test for the fourth section bands. Third section, Prelude and Jubilate, again fun to rehearse but has some technical parts that wil challenge the bands competing. First section, Eric Ball, Sinfonetta - The Wayfarer, wonderful music, so much fun to rehearse. Has it's technical aspects but it should really test the musicality of the bands involved. Some wonderful solo passages, think every soloist in the band gets the opportunity to shine, lovely sectional work too, trombone trio's, horn and baritone in unison, euph with sop etc. great! Will be tight, very good quality bands in first section as there should be. Any band could win in my opinion. Good luck to all competing bands in all sections

That's not right clive - You're bandsmans ticket gets you into the lower sections on the day, 3/1, 4/2 and then you get discount on the top section tickets. it's a good effort on behalf of yorkshire, when many national comps are charging the entertainers to watch!!

Looks like a very good weekend in store, particularly in the top two sections.
First section looks very strong indeed and the top section has so many good bands...listeners in for a treat I suspect.

1st section is well tough!
Too right, in some ways I'm glad I'm not competing this year. Of the 12 bands competing, there is the current Pontins Champions (Champ Section), the Butlins First Section 1st and 3rd and Pontins 1st Section 2nd and 4th. 6 have competed in the champ section within the last 2 years, whilst 2 more were in the top 4 of the 1st section in Bradford last year. 9 are in the 4br top 200 and 4 within the top 100.
I think this is potentially the closest section for a long time. It is definitely the one to watch at the weekend (pity I'm not there), picking a winner will be a very difficult task. Best of luck to you all, in particular Stannington

Last few years you definately get to watch the other section on your day for free and get a discount on championship section (in fact, last year I lost my bandsman's ticket and still got the discount, it was pretty obvious I was a bandsman tho!).
And attendance is pretty good relatively speaking, and top section can get very crowded.

Attendance in the Vic last year was up on the year before too I noticed.
This year should be a cracking beer fest oops brass fest. :guiness Good luck to all competing bands especially in the 2nd section.
There will be a ceremonial burning of the shed part to Carnival in the Vic after the contest, followed by the annual bash the soprano player for intonation problems arguement. :hammer
My personal favourite is the hour long whine about how (it seemed) you were the only one playing in a certain passage when in rehearsel there were 4 of you.

Certainly looks like it will be a really good competition in the 1st section this year by all accounts. Should be a great day - although I will be glad when Saturday 6pm(ish) comes around and i can stock up on some well earned Bass fuel.................. :guiness

Best of luck to all who know me, especially my old friends at Barnsley Building Soc. It will be a cracking contest this year in the 1st section with any number of bands capable of good results!
I would say I'm glad I'm not competing but the Northern area 1st section is similarly poised.

I am not a driver, but hopefully this will help..
Come off the M62 at J26 and follow the route from this link to the hall..
http://tinyurl.com/2m9gtq (Steps 20 - 26)
St Georges is pretty much unmissable as it is a huge building on the corner surrounded by coaches and people wearing band uniforms ;) !
Parking is always at a premium round there so you might be best budgeting for one of the many multi-stories in the immediate area.. If you get really lost follow the street signs for the Bradford Interchange Bus and Train station as it is within spitting distance of the Hall.

Details about how to get to St. Georges by car (including car park details), bus, train and plane along with downloadable maps of Bradford city centre are all available via the Yorkshire website
http://www.regional-contest.org.uk/yorkshire/travel.html
The best way to plan your route by car is to enter the St. Georges Hall postcode (BD1 1JT) as your destination into the AA route planner

Hope this helps

Well couple of days to go, Can't wait. I love area weekend in Yorshire. A chance to catch up with loads of freinds, Watch many of the top bands in the country (5 qualifiers this year in champ, come on!!!!) and sharing a beer or three with my excellent team at Emley.
Good luck to everyone I know - that's more bands than I can list, but always hoping for a good result for Wetherby (brothers band).
I know it'll be a good day my gang have worked really hard this year on the test piece, up a level an all. We'll give a good show on the day i'm sure i'll be proud of all the team, no matter where the men in the box place us - You'll see us in the bar, in our new (ish) walking out gear, we'll be the cheerful ones, come say hello.
Garry
Best wishes to John and the Innovate Skelmanthorpe team in the First Section on Saturday and to Phil and the Innovate Skelmanthorpe B team in the fourth section on Sunday from their sponsors Innovate.
We hope that they and all the other Bands have an enjoyable weekend.

What follows is a quote from our quality local publication, the Halifax Evening Courier.
----------------------------------------
"THERE'S a clash of brass this weekend as 58 bands compete to be crowned Yorkshire champions.
Calderdale groups will take to the stage at the St George's Hall, Bridge Street, Bradford, on Saturday and Sunday.
The are up against the best of brass from across the region, including last year's winners, the Grimethorpe Colliery band.
More than 1,700 musicians will play to sell-out crowds at the two-day event. There are five categories, with the top two in each section going on to the national finals.
Each section has to learn a taxing test piece, which all the bands play. Then they get to belt out a tune of their choice to wow the judges."

Not sure now which piece we should "belt out"? Bands shouldn't have to find out about these rule changes in the local paper. Could give the Spring Festival piece a run I suppose or perhaps a nice rousing march? Decisions, decisions!

For 2nd section bands, wouldn't it be a laugh to to turn up and be handed parts to images of the millenium and go for it un-rehearsed. And you thought last years performances sounded like a musical car crash!!

I think you could well be disappointed. That seems a pretty poorly written article all round with a few typo errors too. And the term "belt out" that they've used - twice! Surely we "perform" not just "belt out" our test pieces.

At least they managed to get the bit about the Pennine Brass Festival about right, although they missed the bit about Roy Newsome commenting on the 2nd section instead of David Horsfield as David's adjudicating that section next weekend. Too complicated for them maybe? Still, I suppose we have to be grateful for any publicity for the banding movement these days.
Nice pic of Hebden Bridge Band went with the article though so I'll forgive them!

Perhaps the writer went to the concert and felt the bands were 'belting them out'. Anyway, why not make sound a bit like Brassed Off? You're hardly going to attract the general public if you tell them the truth are you?

Good luck to all the competing bands, for most of us our annual opportunity to play in this wonderful concert hall. Really looking forward to my first contest with my new band in the very closely contested first section. Very much enjoyed rehearsing The Wayfarer, such wonderful music.
Whatever the results, I'm certain that the Yorkshire region will set a marvellous standard for the rest of the country to follow!
Getting a wee bit excited now, of all the pieces to make your Yorkshire debut on I dont think I could have got a better / worse one!!!!!

Hi Alex . l I didn't know Adam had made a comeback ! If had had have known I would have looked out for him today , but delighted to hear that a player of such talent has picked up an instrument again.
For those of you who dont know , Alex is talking about Adam Foy , ex Grimethorpe Bass Trombone who 'retired ' at the tender age of 25 /26 ?
Hope the comeback is permanent !

Cheers Them, Steve et al, nice to be part of a really confident performance after last year's debacle! I was quite disappointed there was no cup for the sideboard, but not half as disappointed as you lot will be when you discover they gave me £50 to spend on dodgy sop solos for you to suffer this summer!

I'm happy with Kippax Ken - but as you know from the "Carnival" thread, the old yellow score will be placed back carefully in the library full of fusty music, and I'll so miss it... not a jot!
I know you have a rebuilding already underway at Dinnington Ken - and I wish you every success - if you do what you've always done before - we will all get to hear the benefits. The best of luck to all at Dinnington.

You and I both know sometimes it comes off, sometimes it's a damage limitation (My best adjudicators remark ever - Roy Roe - Sop - "well negotiated"). It's nice to have a band and conductor that let you just get on with whichever is appropriate. Let's just hope the finals isn't something like "Millenium"! Mind you I was playing that perfectly on "karaoke" until we tried to rehearse it!!

Thanks for all the good wishes expressed to the Wakey Met Band.
Congratulations to our freinds at Kippax, looking forward to Harrogate, lets make it a 1-2 for Yorkshire.
Well, I may be breaking some ancient brass band protocol and get a slap - but this is how it will look from 4th to top:
.... tried to post up to date tables but they came out mangled -
Best I can do is attach Excel file.. trying to keep up with 5 minute editing facility.. haagghhh....

I think Silkstone & Drig are down but don't quote me etc.
Congratulations to Hepworth.
Better result than finishing last at Blackpool the last time I played for you. Coincidence? I'm not so sure.

What a top section, I'm exhausted after hearing all the bands (and my feet were dead, darned St. Georges Hall seats!).
Black Dyke were immense, as were to be honest, everyone! I had Sellers down for a top finish but that's banding! I think the adjudicators produced a good table (even if it's one that'll raise some eyebrows).
Could this be the beginning of something special from Alan and Briggus?

Oh, and that mobile phone during Imps performance was shocking!
So is it Marsden and Sellers going down then? (From the Excel sheet posted earlier?)
Just like to say well done to all the bands! I thought Sellers did great, as always and thought they may have got a higher ranking, but thats banding for you. I also thought Morgan Griffiths (YBS) played absolutly awesome!!! Glad to see him back playing again!!! Brighouse were great too (Specially Melvyn, woop woop!!!) as was Yorkshire Imps!!! Black Dyke was the performance which sent the shiver down my spine the most tho, it was great to listen to them and a fantastic opener to the Championship contest! I thought that YBS did better and would have also come higher up! But suppose it doesnt matter that much as they were qualified already!
Once again, well done and can't wait for Harrogate! Should be very exciting!
Fi x
Ps, that phone which went off in the Imps performance was discusting and then for the dude to answer the bloomin' thing in the hall was even worse! As i was sat near him i could even hear the caller on the other end of the line! Grrrrr.......apparantly even the band had heard the man on the phone too so how they mangaged to keep up the performance was unbelievable!

Thats terrible when a band is playing and im sure the contest announcer said to TURN OFF mobile phonesbefore the section got started.
But some clown did not and to have the nerve to anwer the phone as well.
Does anyone know who it is?
If so name them on here or send a letter to the British Bandsman about it so they can see how much of a disruption it caused to the audience who wanted to listen to the bands performance and also how unsettleing it was for the band.
This sort of action is just not on at all

It was shocking on many fronts...
1. He hadn't turned it off - BAD
2. He swore at it - VERY BAD
3. He answered it and laughed - UNBELIEVABLE
4. Not only this but he didn't even turn it off after the first time and it rang again - UNFORGIVABLE

Really wish I'd gone yesterday but kind of glad I didn't, would have probably got lynched out of the hall for constantly coughing! Well done to the qualifiers and Pete at Hatfield, hope there's not too many sore heads this morning!
From the points tables it looks like Silkstone and Driglington down.
For what everyone has posted before yes we did hear the mobile go off twice during our performance. Thats the worst thing the guy didnt even switch it off after he'd answered it the first time. Great day overall and a really nice result at the end of it to go back and celebrate.
Congrats to everyone that played over the weekend, what a fantastic weekend it was, and thanks to all the bands that got me points in the prediction competition.

I think the Imps need to be credited on two fronts;
Firstly for the hard work and excellent sixth place finish:clap:, I hope it's silenced a few critics!
Secondly for keeping your composure during the farcical telephone call, that bloke should have been thrown out of St George's Hall for the incident. The audience were reminded to switch all mobiles off (as if you'd leave one on anyway!) it's bad manners and very disrespectful not only to the band but the event as well, especially as he laughed on answering!
Well done to all the other bands who participated, it's the first time I have sat in the audience and not on stage and I can say I was amazed by some of the performances and readings of the piece, thrilling and very entertaining. A joy to listen to....not like some of the more recent testpieces!

Really? Everyone?! Dyke were good but not without their moments (no band got through unscathed), and the stuff that Nigel Boddice said before results went a long way to explaining why the results came out as they did. People I spoke to before results had very different ideas about who would take it. But there you go, we all know how unpredictable this business is.
A great contest anyway. Quality piece, awesome atmosphere in the hall. Loved every second!

Congratulations to all who took part over the weekend and in particular both Innovate Skelmanthorpe Bands. It was a near run thing for the A band in the first section just missing out in a three way tangle with Pennine and Stocksbridge but the B band in only their third ever Area qualified for Harrogate in second place behind the worthy winners of Crofton.
Just two years ago they were last at Bradford and with fundamentally the same band members they have done exceptionally well.

Thanks Kieth, we are looking forward to the Third Section next year, with Ken at the helm the band will progress even further. We took a very young band to Bradford- that will pay off in future years. We enjoyed our 2 years in Section 2 and are a better band because of it.

Congrats to Pennine - heard recording and then through the back of the stage! Stocksbridge must have been good to beat their performance!
Bit disappointed with Barnsley's result, especially after the good result at Pontins :(
Certain parts sounded good from the stage, only to be slated by the remarks. The beginning of the 3rd Mvt sounded perfectly together, only to be written down as not together...
Anyway that's the way it goes, and hopefully they don't go down this year if that table is anything to go by!
The only thing I was cheesed off with is the bar in the hall. "We don't do Cider&black". Surely it's just cider with blackcurrant in it?!?
Then...when I asked for a cider later on...they said they had ran out of Woodpecker...but they had a fridge full behind the bar!!!!!
But congrats to everyone who played & won etc.

I think i can speak for the whole band and say - excellent result, could have played better (as it was in rehersals), but we still came 4th at the hardest area in the world! and shows huge improvement of the band in recent times! slightly disapointed that we didnt make it through to the nationals. Any other day in Bradford and i think 4th would have got us to london! The band are starting to get better results at every contest we go to and i think it shows the direction in which the band is moving!

Congratulations to Brighouse and Hepworth, well deserved (but I have to say that everyone in the hall except the adjudicators had Black Dyke for the winners)
You never asked me then cause i certainly didnt have dyke in first place. The performance was definately not without its moments and the trombones were absolutely swamped at the end with the "soaring" tune.
Brighouse gave the most unblemished performance of the piece and got the tune through at the end which according to the adjudicator is what they were looking for.

The order I had the Champ Section in was:-
1) Brighouse
2) Black Dyke
3) Hepworth
4) Imps
5) Carlton
...so I nearly agreed with the adjudicators! It was a great contest; despite the idiot with the phone. From where I was sat at the back of the circle behind the dignitaries, it sounded like a xylophone part in the wrong place. I hope the adjudicators didn't think the same thing!
I feel sorry for YBS. I had them ahead of Grimethorpe by a couple of places. It certainly wasn't a performance of an 11th placed band compared with some of the others.
Congrats to the Wardles and everyone at Kippax, and to all of the winners and qualifiers.
Just as research for next weekend, what were Steve Pritchard-Jones' remarks like for the 4th Section? As he's one of the men in the box at Burton, it'll be useful to see what he'll be listening for in our performances.

And then, although in a louder bit - it rang again! Couldn't manage to put it on silent obviously
Its a good job he left as everyone started clapping cos I was ready for a bit of a set too.
Hmmm
you should have grabbed the phone off him;)
Well, I may be breaking some ancient brass band protocol and get a slap - but this is how it will look from 4th to top:
.... tried to post up to date tables but they came out mangled -
Best I can do is attach Excel file.. trying to keep up with 5 minute editing facility.. haagghhh....
The Fourth Section looked like it picked up 2005 instead of 2006 I think the tables for next year will look more like this.
Jan-08 Barnsley Metropolitan 8
Innovate Skelmanthorpe 'B' 9
Lofthouse 2000 12
Friendly Band (Sowerby Bridge)12
Linthwaite 12
Armthorpe Elmfield 14
Maltby Miners 14
Tingley 15.5
Haworth 18
Thurcroft 19
Markham Main 22
Dearne Valley 24
Golcar 25
The idiot with the phone was sat next to me.
Yes he did answer, and have a conversation

Hmmm
It was good job he left before he was thrown out the stewards should be a bit more full on and through idiots like him out.

I would love to know who the idiot was with the phone! Yes we could hear it on stage and him answering it. Well done Cornets to keep going and not let it bother you. Cant say I heard the 2nd time it went off - playing too loud!!!

Well done to Horbury great result for us as we had just been promoted and the rather average performance we gave on stage also the fact we followed the winning band who produced a fantastic performance well it sounded good from back stage atleast.

The second time it went off was when there is a really big cresc towards the end, then sub p (I think) and the euphs and barries do a big accel - one of my favourite bits. Obviously you couldn't hear it till the subito p, and very annoying. I was all jumpy at that bit on further performances expecting it to happen again!!

Surely someone on here must know who the mystery mobile offender was or who they were with? as I can't see many random members of the public with no links to banding just walking into St Georges Hall to listen to a band contest! (unfortunately).

He was sat on his own, about 40 yrs old - dark hair!. Sat a little bit too close to us for my liking - I was worried people might think it was one of us. He left as soon as band had finished - he probably realised he was going to get lynched!

Heard some fine playing in the championship and thought Rothwell AND sELLERS WOULD HAVE BEEN hIGHER but THE TOP THREE GOT THE MUSIC OUT OF THE PIECE AND THIS was CONFIRMED IN THE REMARKS bRIGHOUSE sUPERB, hEPWORTH ecxellent and Dyke THERE usuall Selves.AS for the idiot with his mibile Phone ITS A SHAME SOMEONE DID NOT GRAB IT AND THROWIT THROUGH A WINDOW.How IGNORANT.sHOULD BE A GRAT fINAL IN loNDON fIVE top QUALITY bANDS from Yorkshire
Well done to both Brighouse and Hepworth on qualifying at the toughest area contest there is. Good to see Hepworth continuing to progress and really compete - gives us other "little" bands hope that we, with hard work, dedication and a good man in the middle can get there too.
It is starting to grate that the above user, obviously linked with the band, comes on and, in an attempt to seem anything but the person who writes such fantastic reviews for 4BarsRest, posts anonymously, like a blithering idiot, about their acheivements.
There's no need, really, there isn't!

Posts from members of a band that do well make good reading and we all share in their delight - posts from sycophants cheapen the success of any victory or performance.
Please Hepworth Lads and Lassies, tell this person to stop.
Just my thoughts.....

I feel at this point I must make a confession.
My phone went off on Sunday too :( (though only for a few seconds during a loud bit of Grimethorpe's). At first I couldn't understand why or how, as I had turned the phone completely off, but I have now been informed that the 'Alarm' function overrides the off switch on Nokia phones.
And the reason the alarm was set in the first place .......... to remind me to turn the phone off so it wouldn't ring when we were on stage ...... Doh !
Perhaps the phone entry in our performance was just bad karma (what goes around, comes around & all that).

Number 13's reflections:
Our result - fairly pleased. Can't disagree with it. I think that's about where we deserved to
