3 weeks from today it will all be over for another year, but strangely everything is quiet on the discussion front.

So, how are all your preparations going? Any minor (or major for that matter) disasters narrowly averted? what about predictions? and what's the full line up of bands?

here are my predictions for 1st place in each of the sections:

Championship: Polysteel or Lydbrook
1st section: Cinderford or Forest of Dean
2nd Section: Lydney
3rd Section: Pillowell
4th Section: Bream

Any guesses where I am from???

Seriously, good luck to all the forest bands. It will be strange not to be competing this year.

Disasters? Well only been to one rehearsal so far and only going to two more. Oh and the Conductor only accepted the task this week, so not holding out much hope really.

Anybody got the list of entrants

Believe there are 12/13 in the 2nd section

We're going! first time back up in the 2nd Section. New MD is still with us and........ we actually have a full band - in fact we've had to drop some players, which is quite a reverse of fortunes for us.

Looking forward to playing on the day, don't want to tempt fate and say anything else. ;)

We're all going ot plan, only worried about that lovely leisure center acoustic and that the band will be too big for it.:tup
Still interested about Brunel Brass - half of City of Bristol (?)

Glad to hear all is going to plan. Looks like a favourable half of the draw for you too. Perhaps you should hire Lydney Leisure Centre to get a "true sense of the acoustic of the venue" as Mr Hurdley suggested all bands should a few years ago! Hehe!

Hi GingerMaestro
Seems you have been miss informed, the only 2 I can see missing are Kingswood & City of Bristol.

It is of course possible that original posting was wrong, and hopefully if that is the case someone will enlighten us. Either way, it seemed superfluous to have a specific thread on the go when there was already one running covering the West of England Area, which would seem the logical place to continue the discussion.

Anyone know if the current standings are published anywhere - maybe 4br or BB should publish them. It would make it even more interesting if we knew who was in the promotion/relegation battles!!

Seriously, good luck to all the forest bands. It will be strange not to be competing this year.

I only wish your predictions would be somewhere close - it would be a great weekend for Gloucestershire.

Unfortunately I don't share your optimism. I would suggest the following: -

Championship - Mount Charles or Bournemouth
First Section - Cinderford
Second Section - Portishead
Third Section - Heyl Town
Fourth Sction - Bream Silver

For our part, a result good enough to stay up will suffice - Prelude and Jubilate is a great piece of music and much more testing than Anglian Dances was last year in the Fourth Section.

We will however give it our best.

Good luck to all bands competing.

Wouldn't it just! It would be great to have such a strong representation at the Finals, although it would probably make fund raising in the Forest for the contest a contest in itself!

Dave, could you PM me Carol Kear's phone number - need to contact her with regard to her daughter's AB exam in March. Ta.

Thanks K, Dave and Stuart for your vote of confidence.
It will be interesting to see what 4BR come up with, if they go along with you all I'm not sure how I would feel going into a regionals as the fav....

Look forward to seeing you all there.

We had gr8 fun with Prelude and Jubilate a few years ago, beats me why the compound bars weren't marked with the groups of two and three quavers as they are in proper music publications.
The band found it amusing having to use 'triangles and goal posts'. Unfortunately, we didn't score one in Pontins (a goal that is) ;)

Good luck everyone

So who are Brunel Brass then? Is it possible that they are a break away group, especially given they are to be conducted by John Winterflood who has moved on from Swindon and set up Great Western Youth?

Brunel Brass was formed last year to play at the Suspension Bridge in Bristol for IKB 200th birthday. It was a mix of local bands with over a 100 players and conducted by Ian Holmes. It was interesting playing the 1812 in rain and hail!!!!
As far as I'm aware Bendix and Bristol East have merged but I have no idea what the new name is.

I hope this is helpful.

Sounds interesting, and is definitely helpful Keith. Thanks. Maybe a band to listen out for in the 4th section then.

Brunel Brass were formed in late November, 2006. They are based in Swindon and comprise of a mixture of youngsters and tutors from the Great Western Youth Band. With one or two musicians from from other non registered bands in the Swindon Area. The band only meets once a week for fun so that the adult tutors can have a blow and the youngsters can stretch their musical ability sitting next to experienced adults. I hope this clarifies who we are.

That is what I meant about a "breakaway" band from Great Western in my earlier post. Best of luck to you at the regional.
