Euphonium John - I think possibly you should wear a bow tie or simialr neckwear, then we are in no doubt as to who you are!

PS: I'll be the one in the pub down the road from the theatre (if you could call it that) with a pint glass in hand - should stand out from the crowd!

From all the recent comments about the theatre it is beginning to sound as though this may be my first open air contest. Still anything they do to it, can only be an improvement!

I do remember when our band first started doing St Helens, the theatre belonged to a company whose owners were Jehovahs Witnesses or another non-drinking religion, and the bar had been taken out. We just did not know what to do, there were some very emotional scenes from the basses especially. We eventually gathered our resolve and located the Swan which is nearly as salubrious an establishment as the Theatre Royal!

Is anyone on here actually involved with the contest organisation??

If so, is it true that the Championship section starts at 4pm, with 17 bands taking part?

Nobody told me i might need to be available to play Monday (incase we draw last!!!)

But seriously, what time are they expecting to finish??????

Regarding the state of the theatre - one of our members drove past last week, and according to reports, there is not front on the building and it looks as though dress code may be hard hats and steel toe caps as it looks like a building site.

So.......who knows what the acoustic is going to be like, prepare for the worst, rehearse outside!!!!

I've just spent a little while looking through this thread. I thought it was time to register and have an input.

It's an interesting discussion.

I now know who's competing and that John Maines is one of the adjudicators. However, surely, the poor guy can't judge all the competitors.

Do any of you 'TMPers' know who else is in the privilidged position of adjudicating?

Not that it will affect what my band does. But it's good to know.

Or is it all shrouded in mystery??

Thankyou,

Hi Paul, yes I heard Skelly and I thaught you gave a better performance than what we did to be honest. (I'm sure you wont think I'm being patronising!)
I only heard Glossop from backstage when they played the last movement, and again to be honest it did have the odd loose moment. I didn't hear the first two movements but Helen from our band said they played very well in those two movements.
I think we lost it in the first movement were there were too many slips as David Read said.
What did your remarks say?

Mark - good to meet you on Sunday and congratulations on the sop prize. I only heard one band owing to our rehearsal and draw but managed to catch the winners - well done Strongbow!!!

I thought that Glossop sounded very classy in the first two movements but the finale seemed to lack momentum and just got a little loose at times, but it was otherwise all very well shaped and full of detail.

We came off stage slightly disappointed - we were beset by illnesses all around the band and lost a percussionist to 'the band bug' on the Sunday morning - so our result didn't come as much of a surprise. Commiserations to those below us, and we hope that we've not spread nasty diseases all around your bands...

Thanks Straightmute.

I can't disagree with your comments as it was as I thought. I haven't read the remarks as I came home straight after the contest.

Dont mean to be derogatory but could the venue have been any more scabbier???? The waiting room before you went on stage was appalling, there was a strange smell and i honestly think im better off not knowing what it was!!! :?

Congrats to all the prizewinners, i didnt get to hear anyone due to drawing number 1 (our skill at this still remains more consistent than our performances!!!) and we decided on a quick exit back to Scotland.

yeah, I thought they were doing it up, but it seems to be worse than ever now. Shame that was your only viewing of st helens, there are better parts to it!

Now it's all over, anyone going to let us know what you played :?:

Did any of the bands choose anything unexpected :?:

We played "Tournament for Brass", as did Wire Brass.

South Yorkshire Police Band played "The Undaunted"

Hoover Band (Bolton) played "Four Preludes"

Oakley Silver played "The Kingdom Triumphant"

GT Group Peterlee played "Resurgam"

I didn't hear Golbourne, Old Silkstone, or Greenalls.

I am afraid I can't remember what Silk Brass Astra Zeneca Macclesfield played - must be old age coming on  ! I think it may have been "Resurgam", but I wouldn't swear to it....

Anyway, belated congratulations to the wining bands in all sections.

Yes of course there is a nice part of St Helens: the road to Wigan!

Keep on setting them up Neil...
