M.D. on the day: Kerry Bowden
Piece: St Austell Suite,Kenneth Downie

Please remember we don't have any scores!!

Oops.. a slight blip at start but recovers well. Nice dynamic effects at start, with lovely horn section.

A few tuning issues heard on Horns though as we move forward here...ct quavers are together and well played. Kit quavers a tad loud? Eb Bass more more more.... well done...

Flug solo great - ct solo good too. lovely change of mood here into short ct solo which again is good. 5/8 good but tuning issues heard through the back row cts.

Messy quavers on cts here, but the basses bring this back into control, well done! Very loud and sometimes overblown in this section. Nice Eb bass again...

Flugel you do a good job, overblown this time on ct solo though, duet not quite in tune with each other. Nice cresc here through lower band to pause.

Quaver section resumes, better this time. Nice soprano, good balance and sound 'on the top'. Band cresc is good into end of section.

Please don't blow water out of your instruments between sections...!!!!

2nd Movement: Nice start - ooh yes, lovely horns (remember I dont have a score), top ct - you have a nice sound, but was this a tad loud??? You are capturing the mood here, with some interesting effects and balances. Horn long note out of tune and detracts, causes jarring. Shame flug... dont worry, you have a good sound so please be confident, you can do it.

Slow section is flowing well, smooth and considered in approach, some tuning on cornets again though. Perhaps stamina going?

Loud few bars are very much out of tune here sorry. Flugel / horn duet is very nice and a good cresc from the whole band is heard through here. Well done.

Cts tuning again though... shame.

Horn - don't be nervous :)

This sounds a little 'bitty' into high Euph solo which was nicely played. A few tuning issues on unison basses after euph solo.

Ct colo: nice, well played, super sound, just right for the piece. To us, you achieve the right effect.

Sop tuning in slow section on high note. Use ears??!!

Lovely tierce de picardie to end the section.

3rd Movement: Good opening few bars, but loses a little clarity 10+ bars in. is this a dance? (remember i dont have a score and dont know the piece)... moving well now and sounds 'jovial' and fete/fair/park like. Is that the mood?

Nice glock - first heard all morning, well done!

A few minor blemishes are heard as we move forward through this section - I am sure you know where. Seems rushed and a little out of control before timpani comes in loudly and is a little jagged here. Balance is not so good as the section is repeated... some slips and tuning issues - but overall this is moving along quite steadily.

Overall: Maybe more dynamic contrast could be heard throughout the piece, and some additional clarity would have significantly enhanced what I heard. Solid and clear though the piece, and I am sure you enjoyed it.

We have offered our opinion of the bands performance based on the music, and on what we hear; and not on the technicalities of notes and other musical markings in the score etc.

Please don't be offended if you don't agree with what we write. This will simply be a combination of a report of our opinions on how we felt the performance went on the day, and of what's happening at the contest.

Please feel free to add your comments and your scores based on what you heard but please remember to keep these constructive and within the spirit of tMP and our guidelines. :)

Thanks, this review is more or less as accurate as they come. Dunno what happened to me in the second movement - it's never happened in rehearsals and it's been the solos in the first movement i'd been having problems with. Thanks for your kind comments it has given me confidence to go on from my poor performance yesterday  . But this review is a really good thing, keep it up ;)

Glad that you:

(1) appreciate the comments and that they help you to regain confidence Dave and
(2) that you feel the new tMP reviews are a good thing. I am sure we will be doing more and more of these.

Fairly sure Ammanford will come before Pontins John!!! Anyway, I very much doubt Rogerstone will be going to Pontins this year so if you need a hand with the reviews over the weekend shout this way!! Or if any band may need a cornet player, First Section or above let me know!!:) Sorry, back to Cross-Keys, what should be my local band. Dave, sorry I couldn't do the Milennium Centre gig, I hope it went well. Busy this Sunday in Bargoed Park but if you need help on 11th June (is that a Sunday) I should be able to do that.
Cheers all.:tup
