Is there any info about Leicester contest in Nov yet? I know the date and place, but that's about it. Either the association doesn't have a web site or I'm too blonde to find it....

Does anyone out there know how many bands are in each section (Open and 1-4 I think), who they are and who's in the box?

cheers :?

We'll be making the trip for this one, 2nd Section, looking forward to it since we have had a "lean" year for contests and haven't had one since the areas.

Is the rumours about no bar true?, if so wheres the nearest pub :D

Ah yes guthlaxton - I remember that place when I played in leicestershire school of music many moons ago!!

They have the facility to have a bar (no pumps though if I remember correctly) whether it is used or not is a different matter!!

By the way seedhouse last time I checked the legal age limit for drinking was 18    and if I remember corectly you were in my year 11 chemistry class last year!!!!

I on the other hand will be drinking :guiness :bounce

Good good :P

Are you playing there then??

Am now

Anyway, if you wanted to say hello to me you could have done when I came down to pick up the drum on Wednesday! I was the big blonde gobby one!

Should be there but not getting drunk  I have a band practice that evening!

Seedhouse
14.11.2003, 10:11
I had to dash off though on Wednesday, although George jumped on me meaning that I stayed longer! :?
Hope to catch you at the contest then, are you playing for Matlock then?

Di B
14.11.2003, 11:45
Ummmm........

I am registered with Matlock and run their training band, although they are going to Leamington rather than Leicester.

I will be playing with a different band at Leicester (anyone saying I get around a bit will win themselves a punch!  )

Practices seem to be taking over my life at the moment, but can still make time (somehow) for close friends and family. I am currently thinking I must be mad to attempt to attend two lots of band practices and organise the training band when I have just taken on more work at work too.....

Think Sharon must run on duracell 'cos I haven't the energy she has! :D

Thanks for letting me rant, just I am stressed at work and this is my only outlet of insanity!

Hi Di, hope the tatty bass drum and music were ok!, yeah Duracell (aka beer ) is great int it!

Who you playing for at the contest Di???
Or is it a secret

Di B
14.11.2003, 15:57
Well, it's not a secret when I am on stage! lol!

I don't feel its my place to state things like that on public forums..... its just the way I am! Its the bands decision wether they wish to inform people generally or not, not mine.

Saying that, my friends and fellow Matlockers do indeed know! If you are at the contest you will probably see me in a non-Matlock jacket too!

Di B

SammyT
17.11.2003, 18:00
There could possibly be a bar there! If not there is a pub not far away - 1812 is out of the gates and turn left, plough? is right!!!! Both on other side the road max 5 mins walk!
I recommended the Plough (if that is its name) cause from what I can remember the 1812 is a bit grotty!!

I am pretty sure there is a bar though if not I will see you in the plough!!!

Still haven't found any more info about who's entered - I know there's 7 in our section (1st) but not who they are. Adjudicators are Malcolm Brownbill and Michael Fowles.

What time does it all start? I have a rehearsal that night but wouldnt mind coming down as its only a couple of miles. Open adjudication always confused me....how do they go wee wee???

Di B
18.11.2003, 12:32
Ummm.......... by going to the toilet???!

I don't think they usually do it in the box you know....

Then again, the male ones may not be house-trained - tis a common problem!

Steve
18.11.2003, 15:15
Di, I have heard many tales of the things that have happen in the box, and going toilet has featured on the list many times.

Di B
18.11.2003, 16:00
Eugh! Gross!

Guess thats why there are few and far between female adjusicators then?

The smell would be horrendous! :x

What else do they get up to in there then?!! Hang on, its a family friendly forum isn't it!

The pub is closer this year if the bar at the college is not open. For reference, the nearest pub is the 1852 - turn left out of the college, cross the road and it is 2 mins walk away.

Are the results announced after each section or en masse at the end of all sections. If the latter anybody know roughly what time that is likely to be.

Could do with knowing this so we can plan refreshment stops on return to Land of the Canary!

You obviuosly missed my post at the top of the page - pay attention alex!!! (eerrrr scary remenisions of last year!!! :? )

As said previously I am very happy to buy you a coke!!!

Anyway back to topic - 1852 is ok, I think the plough is better, I have it only fairly (ok vaguely) good authority that the bar should be open though, not sure about the results though, soz! I'll phone me bro and let you know! :D

:D CONGRATULATIONS KIBWORTH! :D

Open Section
1. Kibworth
2. Ratby
Best Instrumentalist: Kibworth EEb bass, Best trom. section Kibworth

First Section
1. Kibworth
2. Friary Guildford 8)
3. I really can't remember....sorry!
Best Instrumentalist: Kibworth cornet

Does anyone have a full list of results? There's nothing on 4br yet

Di B
24.11.2003, 09:29
I know some of the results.....

3rd/4th Section;

1st Carlton Brass
2nd Shirland Training
3rd Hitchin

Am also aware Snibston and Desford won the 2nd section and Blidworth came 2nd (well done guys!)

Non Contesting - Thorseby Youth came 1st

One thing I would like to say about this contest is *shock* how good in my opinion the adjudicator of the lower sections was.

The contest had requested all the scores of the test pieces early so that the adjudicator could actually study the scores before the day (which in my opinion should be essential!!) and so they knew what he was looking for with each band.

Also, he complimented all of the young players from the non-contesting section on the stage, and I hope his remarks reflected this positive nature as it can be so disheartening for children to be slated (well it is for all of us but we adults just get drunk!)

I personally would like to see more own choice contests use the same format and give the adjudicators the scores early. Seems it can only benefit we bandsmen!
