Bzzt... Incorrect incorrect bzzt alert. In English, "y" is a semi-vowel, meaning that it is sometimes a vowel and sometimes a consonant. So it's a vowel in 'baby', but a consonant (albeit a slightly vowelly consonant) in 'yam'.

My definition of "semivowel" is slightly up the spout. According to t'internet, it's more in the way of a modifier to a vowel sound. So I think it's more correct to say that "y" in English is at various different times, each of a vowel (as in "rhythm"), a semivowel (as in "way"), and a consonant (as in "yarrow").

Sufficiently so, I suggest, for it to be accepted, for the purposes of this game, as a non-vowel. So, unless anyone has strong views to the contrary, I recommend that 'vowel' in this context be taken to mean a, e, i, o and u.
