Just to get things going nice and early. Mind you it's only 4 and a half weeks off. So, let's have some random guesses at the top six for London. Remember, no YBS or Grimey!
My guess:
1) Cory
2) B&R
3) Fairey
4) Fodens
5) Dyke
6) Scottish Co-op

Are you on commission or something? You would have Dyke to win the Grand National if you could have your way.
Having read your posts about Dyke before I thought I would pay particular attention to their sound at the Open as you kept raving on about it. I have to say that, whilst they have an excellent sound, it was nowhere near the quality that YBS were pumping out. Mind you I thought Dyke's bass section were quality.
As for my guesses, here goes......
1) Faireys
2) Dyke
3) Cory
4) Flowers
5) B & R
6) Fodens
Time for the west of england to make a mark back at the big contests. Flowers could be the ones to do it even though their percussion section is mightily dodgy. Still not too much percussion in this piece for them to worry about.

Mutsuj (Justum backwards, check out Dyke motto) plays for Dyke methinks... and it always pays to be confident! :) The two bands that beat them at the Open aren't there either.

How could I not put you in my top six luce  I'm not putting us in mine 'cause I didn't want to jynx it (again!) hehe. There's no major solos as such (none as hairy as the ones in Venus anyway), it's all just general band sound, quiet playing in Nimrod etc, musical style and one heck of a blow in the finale!

Igg,
It matters not to me your thoughts on my previous posts....The sound of a band is only really recognised where the accustic does not support....any band would sound good at symphony hall.......however RAH is a different matter...IMHO the only true hall because of size and unsupporting accustic where you know if a band has a sound to project......as far as your comparing the Dyke sound to YBS, history speaks for itself as far as the nationals is concerened...... The hall needs to be filled by a band thatcan fill it....

Sorry. Any band does not sound good at Symphony Hall. I heard a few on the weekend to prove that. As for the RAH some bands get away with razzing their proverbials off only for the adjudicators to say 'what a full sound'. That is part and parcel of the RAH acoustic- it can take loud noises but smaller bands dont quite come off if they dont have the power.
I have lost interest in the 'who has the biggest band sound' competition. I like to hear warm, sonorous balanced sounds whether at pp or ff. Some bands on the weekend went overboard and tried to blow their instruments straight and, ineveitably, it sounded hard. In my honest opinion, at the moment, YBS have the best sound based on their performance at the Open last weekend. That is not to say that I will never change my mind.
As I said previously, I enjoyed your performance at the Open, (especially the last note which was a cracker), and you are welcome to ignore what me or any other person thinks about your band and it's sound if you like. Good luck at the Nationals.

People have referred to the RAH as helping those bands with a big sound, but it is also good for those who have the nerve and ability to play really quietly. One of my lasting memories of the National Finals was Dyke playing "Between the Moon and Mexico", with some beautiful pianissimos that still travelled right up to my seat on the front row of the balcony. I had to leave before the results and could not believe the adjudicators had placed them so far down!

After your somewhat scathing resume of the Best of British concert on sunday for 4barsrest......, perhaps this is where you should reside..... Or at best following your comments, be able to sit on stage and be on a par with any of the players in the bands that once again delighted the audience with their capabilities.... no disrespect ..but I think not...

Please be assured that I had not intended my comments on the band's performance on Sunday to be read as "somewhat scathing". I can only comment on my personal reaction, which was that, for me, the performance fell slightly short of my expectations. As I said in the report, we have come to expect great things whenever Dyke come to the stage, and when we feel it is "only" very good, then the feeling of disappointment can be heightened, as our expectations have not quite been met.
To some extent, as I said, the choice of repertoire was a factor: there are always problems when taking music from an earlier era and putting it in the hands of any modern instrument group, and I didn't think the Mozart quite worked, despite some first class playing - if it is any comfort I felt the same thing when hearing Fodens play the Magic Flute overture.
I could have simply put in an account of who played what, with no personal reactions, but I do not think that would have been the right or honest thing to do. I wish my bass-playing was of sufficient standard to be able to sit alongside you on the stage, but alas I am all too aware that it isn't. In writing as I did I am aware that I am opening myself to criticism, but such is the way of the world.
I did enjoy the performances of all the bands on Sunday, but just felt it did not quite meet the standards set in previous years.

I didnt enjoy Dykes version of Prague... but although I'm sure they'll get top 6 for the Finals, I doubt they'll win... however, saying that, the test piece is a completly different style to Prague so may suit them better...

Indeed. Have just read the review, and don't believe it to be "scathing". When a class band like Dyke gets reviewed, the reviewers will be critical because of the high standards expected. If you want to see unbiased reviews that say your concerts were perfect in every way read the bandsman instead!
Brian Kelly
23.09.2003, 00:26
Well said, Rutty and Darth Tuba! I am a second generation and lifelong pondasher, but I have heard Dyke have the occasional off day, and sometimes not play quite up to the standard normally expected of them.
I did not hear the "Best of British " concert the day after the Open, but I know Peter, having played alongside him in Bolton Citadel SA Band in the 1980's, and I am sure that his extremely mild comments were his honest opinion. He was too modest to say this in his reply, but he is a former bandsman in the Grenadier Guards, and he knows good playing when he hears it (and when he doesn't).
Black Dyke is a great band, but it is a great band because it is a great band, not because it is Black Dyke. I have encountered bands that have come to expect uncritical adoration just because of who they are rather than because of how they play, and that way lies the road to ruin.
agreed...
they are not the only top british band out there, they are not always the best on the day, and they are as entitled to an off day as much as the rest of us.

Oh, hang on, he's a SA player and a bass trom player. That explains it all!

I think a bottom six competition would be an interesting one aswell, it's a lot harder going for the bottom of the pile that the top. It's always the same few bands that get in the prizes, so a bottom six prediction should give more contrast to the prediction.

Can someone make this into a sticky so we don't lose sight of it?
Anyway, to date 23 entries (sorry not inc Moira as she only entered 5 bands & Cory twice!).
Using 6 for 1st place, 5 for 2nd etc, Cory & Dyke are neck and neck for 1st place, whilst B&R and Faireys are tied for 3rd. After that it's Fodens followed by Flowers Tredegar and Scottish CWS.
Keep the predictions rolling in.

Come on, let's have some more guesses. Just because we're not offering a cornet as a prize!
32 entries to date - Cory & Dyke lead the way with Faireys, B&R Fodens and Flowers following behind.

Well, I'm sure mine is now a kind of yellow with a hint of brown after the years of sweaty bass players who have inhabited it, but cheers!

Why should an orchestral piece suit Redbridge?
Is it because they wear Dinner Jackets or do they have a string section?
Surely you are not suggesting that their cornets sound like trumpets!

I said it 'might'

Don't know about the dinner jackets, particularly where the females in the band are concerned. Should they wear dinner jackets too?
Surely you are not suggesting that their cornets sound like trumpets!
You surely are right. I'm not. Not specifically Redbridge, anyway. However, there are plenty of bands' cornet sections from all over the country who seem to put a premium on sounding like trumpets. There are even some euphonium players who try to imitate the sound of the trombone.

I could have sworn I left a posting giving my predictions but I cant find it anywhere!!
If I have and this posting needs to be deleted I'm very sorry to the tMP mods, I know they do put a lot of their time into making sure everything is above board.
Anyway my guess would be:-
Faireys
Fodens
Black Dyke
Cory
Leyland
Flowers
Good luck to all Bands. Even if you come last (which someone has to) I'm sure you will still enjoy a fantastic time.

Two out of three aint bad... the competition on 4br will be won by somebody. I think they twigged to the rediculous odds of anyone getting the exact results right and are doing it by a points system, much like when we did the Open predictions.

Hehehe you never know!
I'm gunning for Kirkie to win....c'mon the Kirkie crew!!! Not even gonna have a go at predicting the results. Plus I'm supposed to be teaching young children at the moment. Ah the joys of having an IT suite in class!!!!

1) B&R
2) Cory
3) Dyke
4) Tredegar
5) Faireys
6) Fodens
I can get my prediction to work perfectly if i use a Rubics Cube, one move at a time, manipulation.
Swap Fodens with Faireys, then Tredegar & Dyke, Tredegar & Cory and last of all, B&R & Faireys. Easy.
Does this mean I win?

My random number generator came up with the following very interesting results: 17, 4, 6, 12, 13, 9 which alphabetically translates into:
1 Faireys
2 Leyland
3 Haydock
4 Black Dyke
5 BAYV Cory
6 Scottish Co-op
I got the winners right (by chance procedure) but inadvertantly put a curse on Leyland and Haydock. Sorry guys.

Having just had a look through the entires for our fun competition - no prizes I'm afraid :!: - 40 people posted their choices in all. Working on the system in use for the Pontins competition, ie 1 point per band in the places, and an additional one for each band in the right position we find the following:
3 points: jafe (who only posted 3 bands)
4 points: BassBoneShep; Hilary Mateer
5 points: Darth Tuba; PeterBale; beard_4b; Stephen2001; Maestro; Brian Kelly; Helen V; Heather; Straightmute; dyl; Markyboy
6 points: Mutsuj; Cantonian; Roger Thorne; Flugelatbr; johnflugel; Euph-Bari; P C; Shommusic; Kenny C; Moy; Cornet blower; imthemaddude; floral_dance; Dave Payn; Revel8ion; Mark Bousie
7 points: Leisa; iggmeister; flashbarry; big_benthomson; wewizrobber; Ginge; Kerwintootle; bassinthebathrom; Sudcornet
8 points: -
9 points: bcbeugh
A clear winner then, in bcbeugh, but a special menton for the three tMPers who predicted all six prize-winners - but not necessarily in the right order: Dave Payn; Sudcornet; Revel8ion
