don't your mod'ly powers allow you to add to the poll?
would also be interesting to see breakdowns by region - does the number of tmpers bear any relation to the number of bands in each area?
don't your mod'ly powers allow you to add to the poll? I tried but I couldn't find how to do it!

Have been playing at the Areas since 1977 4th Section with School Band Shire Oak when my first area test piece was Hungarian Fantasy by Albert Jakeway did not come last either.
Have played in all sections mostly first and the old 2nd section, never played in a 3rd section area but played in a national final in 1977 3rd section and won this was my first major contest with the senior band who i was with at the time Walsall Metropolitan Band (Staffordshire known as today) what a debut with senior band that was will live with me forever:woo
1st time in the Championship Section at the Areas!
this will be my 2nd time with the band
I will be there! First time ever in Yorkshire Championship Section. Have played in all other sections since 1980!

Can't see me playing at Blackpool this time. Not played since my accident in September and I only got my teeth last week (have managed to run off a few scales but feels weird) Know the test piece though as I had it on MP3 in hospital.

I'll be playing at the Midlands area in the 1st section. It's going to be strange because I have only ever played in the NW area's, and now i am going to a foriegn territory ;)

This tMPer will be playing in the first section, along with her daughter. Her husband and son will both be playing in the fourth section. :)

This will be my 4th Areas appearance - 3rd in Championship, my 1st time was in 4th section (I seem to have bypassed the ones inbetween!).
First time at Blackpool and in the 4th section. Played in 2nd section last year with Eagley (Fleetwood and Pontins).
20-oddth appearance, in 3rd Section North West as usual!
Have previously done 4th section and two shots at Championship (sop on Tristan Encounters - I must have been mad!) about 10 years ago.
Glad not to be in Spanish Hall this year, it's like an echo chamber!
This will be my 17th area with Campbeltown Brass, we've been up and down the 2nd/3rd sections over the years, so altogether its 8 years in 2nd section and this now being the 9th 3rd section area that Ive done.

This'll be my 2nd areas...first time in the West :D
I've only ever played with one band in the regionals...Stouport-on-Severn (Midlands)..first was in 1997 in 3rd section (they had just been demoted from 2nd section from 1996)....since then I've been proud that we have still basically the same core of players and have progressed steadily proving (I hope!) that teamwork and a consistent friendly group of players have achieved so much to entering our highest ever status in the 1st section this year (hope it lasts!).
Over these years the results were:
1997 3rd section 11th
1998 3rd section 13th
1999 3rd section 3rd
2000 3rd section 8th
2001 3rd section 6th
2002 2nd section 13th
2003 2nd section 3rd - NatFinals Dundee 17th
2004 2nd section 3rd - NatFinals Dundee 17th
2005 2nd section 8th - promoted 1st section
2006 1st section?
The majority of the basic improvements to the band must go to Dai Maplestone while he was our MD from 1999-2005....We are now in the capable hands of Barry Pope and hope we can continue this for a good few years yet!
Wishing all those in the regionals to produce of their best in this years contests!
regards

Flugel in the 2nd section. This will be my *thinks* 21st Area - have played in 3rd, 2nd and 1st sections (probably unlikely to make it any higher now) and I can now say had the pleasure of qualifying too - last year at only the 20th time of asking.
Not many of us get two bites at the cherry.......
Conducting in 3rd Section. In the band will be my wife and three of my four children (the fourth will probably be playing football!!!!!!) and one of my niece's.
Planing in top section.
Lost count how many I've done in total, but most of the last 30 ish ?!?!?

I am playing 3rd Cornet (too many 2nd Cornets!!) in the 3rd Section WoE areas.... as is Mummy.... except she's playing 2nd Horn (1st is too high for her tummy at present!) This will be my second area contest and I'm not sure about mum  must be summat like 25th maybe??? I'll shut up else I'll get beat up!!
We are hoping for a good result this year.... we are currently 2nd in the 3rd Section WoE but Gillingham are 4 clear points ahead of us, so I think we have to do very well and hope they don't (sorry Lisa!) !! Would be amazing to go up to the 2nd Section!! :D

27.02.2006, 22:53
would also be interesting to see breakdowns by region - does the number of tmpers bear any relation to the number of bands in each area?
I don't think that works for WoE!! We have an absolutely huge entry for the areas this year...
4th Section = 24 bands
3rd Section = 13 bands
2nd Section = 16 bands
1st Section = 13 bands
Championship Section = 12 bands
and there are hardly any tMPers down here!! Theres a few cornish tMPers... me in devon and rapier in somerset and I think thats about it! I'm sorry but your theory is out of the window as far as WoE is concerned!!

grand total of 5 bands in our section... but if anyone wants to watch it should be a laugh watching me playing the timps and trying not to laugh in the 5 bars wheres its only me playing... for some reason i always just want to start bashing really random loud notes!

I think this about my 12th Area, all with Brackley.
Fi, I hear your Mums' Tenor Horn has come back like new!! I hope it goes well for you all. I played Entertainments years ago, tricky piece. (Think it was a 1st or 2nd section piece when I did it!) This will my First (and last) contest on Flugel!!

My 1st areas missed for a good 12ish years. All thanks to not being able to commit to a band because of work and the 75% chance I could have to work on the contest day.

positions ive played rep,2nd, solo cornet, solo horn and flugel. Approx my 12th area's

Here's what I've done:
1995 - 9th in 1st section with Horsham Borough (On 2nd)
1996 - 4th in 2nd Section with Horsham Borough (On 2nd I think?)
1997 - ?th in 2nd Section with Horsham Borough (On Sop?) (not shown on 4br but I'm sure I remember doing it!?
1998 - 10th in 2nd Section with Horsham Borough (On Sop)
1999 2001 - Didn't compete (too busy at uni)
2002 - 8th in 1st Section with Cambridge (on Sop)
2003 - Last  in 1st Section with Cambride (On sop)....drawn 1st
2004 - 9th in 1st Section with Cambridge (on Sop)
2005 - 7th in Champ section with Soham (on sop)
Never been in a qualifying band (yet!!) fingers crossed for this year!! just don't wanna get drawn first again!
Ok here's a good one:
This will be my 19th Regional Contest - four sections (excluding Champ) spread over three areas - North West, North Wales and then (All) Wales - all with the same band!
Results over those 19 years have been mixed to say the least:
7x1st
2x2nd
3x4th
1x5th
1x6th
1x7th
2x9th
1x17th
But it's nice to see more 1st than any other placing! ;)
This year we're competing in the First Section in Swansea.
Wow, excellent record there Dyl. Lets hope you can make that 8 x 1st eh?
First Section Yorks Areas for me this year, have played in all sections at Bradford over the years, qualified twice, once as winners on Tintagel in the third section a few years ago. Here's hoping for a trip to Harrogate this year!

Is that right? I saw that in BB...anything to do with the test piece?
well there are only 8 bands altogether (3 have withdrawn), but as to why those bands have withdrawn, i can only speculate. Difficult piece, lack of players, mass emigration to sweden....
I'll be at the North of England in Darlington playing in the Champ section.
And I'll be at the Yorkshire Areas this weekend just for the watching though and maybe a bit of boozin'
Come and find me at either

Have played in 4th section twice, 3rd section twice, 2nd section once and 1st section once.
P.S. Good luck Chezza, might have to come and listen to you play timps...can't be any worse than your cornet playing ;) (joking), although i'm surprised that someone is actually letting you play one of the noisest instruments in the band
