Just had a calculation for the nearest tMP predictions (since I am stuck in sick and not out celebrating with all the rest of you! )
This is how the results were calculated- a max of 6 points for each place making a total of 36 availiable points.
i.e YBS came 1st so you would have got the following points for YBS
6th place= 1 point
5th place= 2 points
4th Place = 3 points
3rd Place = 4 points
2nd Place = 5 points
1st Place = 6 points
and Dyke came 3rd so you would have got the following points for dyke
6th Place = 3 points
5th Place = 4 points
4th Place = 5 points
3rd Place = 6 points
2nd Place = 5 points
1st Place = 4 points
The results are:
Leisa 26
4BarsRest 24

Had a great day and a nightmare journey home, but hey...
YBS were terrific - I had Brighouse, Cory and Dyke next, in that order.
Planets turned out to be quite a test for some bands but I'm looking forward to hearing some 'proper band music' again.
Good to meet up with so many from tMP. Hope Roger's car was not clamped!
D
wahey!! flixton-ites will be happy!!!
Well done to ybs! and dyke! does any1 know if C.Wood was playin perc with dyke? whio came in the middle? well done to them too!!!!
I had YBS and Cory as my top two, for me YBS had something magic which other bands got nowhere near! Just like 'Les Preludes' they didn't stick to an Orchestral interp but what they did really worked for brass band. Faireys Jupiter was amazing, such a shame Venus didn't come off!! I thought Whitburn were v good, but what did them good was their consistancy, no real slip ups and a v nice band sound.
Great performers on the day for me were, Dyke & Cory Euph, Cory & Ever Ready Flugel, Sop Cory, Dyke(so controlled) and Cornet CWS.

14.09.2003, 13:31
yes deave, you're putting me to shame!
Seriously though, a good day, but for me the piece didn't quite come off. Hope the organisers bring back the policy on commissioning new works next year, for me the contest seemed to lack the buzz of previous opens, maybe because the music was so familiar. Venus did sort the bands out, infact almost too much as almost every band had accidents and this became a bit of a leveller! Didn't hear Whitburn, but congratulations to them.
Can't disagree with the result too much, although I'm sure Cory will feel more than a little unlucky with their placing. YBS gave a very classy performance though.
Touche deave-the BOC title is mine again!

Well done to YBS. They had all the right soloists in all the right places for this one! They seem to keep winning it every other year too! :D
As regards our result, 14th was pefectly fair. Venus went very awry on stage and we never recovered, no matter how good Jupiter was going to be :( The mobile phone was a tad annoying, but I'm sure we weren't the only band who had this happen? How hard is it for people to switch the ****** things off!
Roger Thorne
14.09.2003, 14:24
To be fare I heard 14 bands and only heard one mobile phone ring. I know this is one too many, and I agree it is damn annoying that this happens. But I think the audience yesterday did make a big effort.
What did annoy me though was the amount of people who had coughing fits at the beginning of the performances and the constant noise of sweets packets being opened.
Ban Mobile Phones, Sweets, and issue cough drops with every programme!
Hi everyone,
Excellent day yesterday, I agree the test whilst enjoyable lacked that something special because it was so well known. Still definitely sorted the bands out.
For me YBS were outstanding and whilst points are a bit of a waste of time would have been interested to see how far ahead they were. For the other top 5 things were about right, but I was amazed at the different tempo's adopted by the MD's.
I too thought B&R put up a top show, but it was tempo wise different to the others and maybe that cost still it worked for me.
Agree maybe Cory can feel a little hard done by.
How nice to see two differing adjudicators for a change with an experienced head. I'm all for that and a result that you couldn't really argue with that much.
Just one minor complaint, surely it isn't too much to ask to get the band representatives there waiting at 19.00pm to come on to the stage is it for the awards ceremony? everyone must know this is required, it took nearly 25 minutes to get started!

I can't beleive how much of a Boc I have become! Yesterday was the first time in my life I've listened to two bands on the trot and been sober!!
I did enjoy it tho, was a good day!!
Something completely off topic but if just discovered a band called 'deave' on www.deave.com and also a dictionary definition of it...here goes:
Deave
\Deave\, v. t. [See Deafen.]
To stun or stupefy with noise; to deafen. [Scot.]

My wife and I went to a Prom concert a few weeks ago, Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Sir Simon Rattle. They had to start 'The Rite of Spring' again as a mobile phone went off in the opening bars of solo bassoon and this was live on Radio 3!
I hadn't been to the Open for a few years and was quite disappointed in audience reaction to a slip/clip/split etc. It's really bad manners when there is a reaction from the audience but I hope those on stage don't hear them.
Mark Bousie
14.09.2003, 16:38
I agree! The reaction of some of the audience was surprising to say the least. Venus was very taxing and I think I'd be right in saying alot of those in the audience who couldn't help themself have no idea what its like to play under that kind of pressure. No matter who you are slips do happen occasionally, its the quality of what you do right that makes you a great player. Thats why the players sat on the end chairs in the top bands are there.

I personally couldn't hear any of this from on stage, and I had plenty of time sat there listening with that bass part! It is terrible to hear the sharp intakes of breath etc. as a soloist makes and error or splits. Not so much for that soloist, but it isn't the best thing to hear if you are the next one to play a solo!

Had a great day and a nightmare journey home, but hey...
Me too, stuck in a train with a load of paraletic Peterborough fans, was a little bit annoying to say the least!
Regarding Mobiles, I only heard one from where I was sat in the lower circle. I think the staff at the doors should tell people to turn the wretched things off before they enter the audotorium, particularly at big contests where people are constantly coming and going between performances.
Illinois, the American Band I think did very well, all things considered, but for me they didn't have a typical full brass band sound like Dyke, YBS, B&R etc, and it showed at times, particulary in Jupiter.
For me, I had YBS top, then either Cory or Brighouse, then Dyke, Ever Ready and Fairey completing the top 6.
I did try and do some tMP people spotting around the bar, but, it was a little bit crowded, plus when you don't really know who you are looking for!!!!
Just as a little aside, does anyone know why were Every Ready wearing black bands on their left arm?

Yes, I'm fairly sure that the relegated bands from this year will be Leyland and Travelsphere.
I think the real aim is to whittle the open down to 14-16 bands over time and it will cetainly get rid of some otherwise very good bands. Very much like the premiership now isn't it with only 6-7 guaranteed survival. I think it will catch them unawares soon though if one of the real big boys is up for relegation.
Cynical I know but probably correct. Interesting to see what would have happened this year with Grimethorpe carrying a 14th place. 11th would have seen them go out instead of Leyland. Bets on them ever being in the Grand Shield please.

I couldn't either but apparently the whole hall took a sharp intake on one of our big yoedling incidents which I think is just well out of order. Its a sad fact that at least half of the audience is there to hear you mess up, just a shame those people have to make it so obvious that thats the reason they're there.

I heard 12 of the 18 bands on saturday and thought that the results were about right save Cory who I had down to win it. I actually preferred YBS's performance but I thought that Cory were closest to what was on my short score.
I heard the gasps etc and there were plenty of them with many 'big names' having a bad day at the office but that's part and parcel of contesting.
As for the mobile phone it sounded more like a watch alarm to me- in fact someone suggested to me it was one of the players on stage- perhaps the Leyland boys can confirm whether this is true. Nevertheless, the 'announcement' made by the compere afterwards was out of order in my book. He spoke to the audience like a bunch of idiots. All but possibly one of them were innocent. Further, just as B & R were about to play there was loads of talking which could be heard on stage from where the compere had just headed off.

I heard all but 2 of the bands on Saturday, and agreed (more or less) with the prize - winners. Some bands who I thought played well came a bit too far down the list in my opinion, e.g. Besses, and I thought that Illinois Brass should have come higher than 16. (the 2 bands I missed were Ever Ready and Leyland, so I can't make a comment on either of them).Part of the fun of contesting, I suppose! :D
What puzzles me is that (naming no names) certain bands played extremely well the week before at the Bridgewater Hall but not so well at Birmingham, while others did not seem to be on top form at Bridgewater Hall but were firing on all cylinders at Birmingham. :?

just like to say that although the result for us was awful :cry:its the taking part that matters .yes everytime we go to a contest we all want to win but we didn't play too well and the rest is history.but if you look at us this time last year we were dead and buried but with determination we came back and altough we came last how many bands would swap places with us.i personally am gutted but we have to move on just like the other bands who have been relegated to the shield.there is no shame at playing in the shield yes we all want to play in the open but the shield is a fantastic competition, well run ,a great weekend awayand a great trophy to win.two years ago if somebody had said to me play in the open then go in shield and win and go back to open but you might come last ,i would have snapped their hand off.
p.s on sat heard that desford are in shield next year.remeber keep smiling!!!!!!!!!!!

It was indeed a mobile phone, but was not a ringtone, just a very loud text message alert. It wasn't a member of the band, it was an audience member on the front few rows, as they could clearly be seen by us diving for their handbag. Not blaming this in any way, shape or form for our poor performance. However, we made a complaint straight after coming off stage hence the announcement. Announcements about mobiles should be made before every performance in my opinion... not just at the start of the day. People come in and out of the hall all day and some people will forget to check!
Thanks guys.
The heads are still hurting and will probably still be this time next week. One of the best things about Saturday was the genuine warmth of the congratulations we received from the other Scottish bands, also from Cory and Illinois who were unfortunate enough to be in our hotel on Saturday night. I pity and apologise to the poor American soprano player who was stuck in the lift at 3 am with the Bradleys, Andy Shaw and myself. What a party!

You certainly don't expect a band like Leyland to have to qualify for the Open but I suppose its a sign of the times and it is nice to see some new up and coming Bands being noticed now.
It just shows how standards are evening out.

Travelsphere are definately down. Ourselves and besses are tied on aggregate points for the last two years, but If they take this years result as the tie break we will be down. They may relegate 3 bands though. It's pretty certain we'll be down. I think it's just Besses who aren't sure. I was enjoying going to the Shield just for the beers too!

I agree. A reminder perhaps every 2 bands would be sensible. I can assure you that it wasn't my phone which got nicked by somebody who has caused me a great deal of hassle having to cancel SIM cards etc etc.
There was quite a lot of noise about. Some old geezers in front of me decided to take out their packed lunches right in the middle of the quiet stuff. Even worse we were in the choir seats and you cant get away with making too much noise there. I thhink part of the problem is that the acoustic in the Hall is so good that all noises carry.
I have to say though that the choir seats are the best- you really get to see what goes on. Weird noises from the conductors, glock players with nerves which looked like they had the DTs!

No real quibble over the results, although I thought Cory would have been higher, despite odd untidiness - they got a tremendous reception when they took the stage on Sunday. I also would have placed Leyland higher for their fine "Jupiter".
One general comment: very few bands took the quiet sections at the right level, particularly in "Venus", and most didn't make enough of the grading between f < ff < fff - very notable in Cory and YBS, and really brought their performances to life.
In general, I am in favour of Open Adjudication, which could have picked up quite a bit of part-switching - particularly covering back row cornet parts with the front row, but it is interesting to note that I was put off the Whitburn performance visually, rather than musically, and had tended to discount it! I should like the chance to listen to it again, without the distracting "hand-vibrato" effect, to see if it changes my view.
It was certainly a day for the sops and flugels to shine - as well as the horns - and most rose to the challenge well.
Hi there - I've just found the forum and it looks great.
I enjoyed Saturday but was disappointed with the test piece - thought it was a bit of a cop out and would have much rather listen to average performances of something like Maunsell Forts than this.
One thing I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned was the use of mutes by YBS, particularly the cornets who seemed to have four or five different varieties, when they weren't marked on the score. The performance was brilliant but this is something they often do and seem to get away with!
Also, what happened to Fodens? They were one of my favourites to win at the outset but the performance was very poor and I think they were lucky to get seventh. I know they had an early draw but that's not a good excuse when the contest starts at midday.
Finally, well done to Whitburn - much deserved!

i have to disagree about the choice of test piece being dissapointing, I thought it proved to be an impressive choice. It wasn't technically difficult, compared to the likes of Masquerade, but found it to be extremely mentally demanding on the band especially on the soloists - sop & Flug. I do agree with the top two spots but feel the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th were in the wrong order. For me YBS, Whitburn, B&R, Cory, Dyke and Fairies - But thats contesting as they say....... :hammer

I think it was an excellent choice test! How many bands played it perfectly?
PeterBale
17.09.2003, 12:57
I also felt it worked as a test piece, but also felt that the most satisfying performances were those where the conductor made it clear he wanted to link the two movements together - even if he then waited, we didn't get the coughing and disturbance in the same way, so maybe they should have marked a "segue" in between them.

I was initially dubious about using an arrangement this year, but it is a superb arrangement and made the MDs think about style a bit more than usual - they couldn't just play it like a brass band piece
Don't get me wrong, I too think the arrangement is superb, and it clearly provided a test judging by the number of problems it caused to the bands. However, my preference would have been to hear an original composition for band rather than an arrangement, however good that arrangement might be.
