View Full Version : Subscriptions: Is anyone NOT receiving theirs...?
TheMusicMan

Can I ask if anyone is not receiving the subscription notifications from tMP as they should please? I have had a report of this not working as it should be, and I am trying to establish if this is local or sitewide.
Thanks...

haven't had any for a little while
I'm not getting them either.
Have also tried the recipe that worked last time I stopped getting them: changing my email address, and that didn't help.

Have we any news on this yet, John? I can still only receive forum subs, not thread subs and I only get 7 of those, even though I have subscribed to more. It is very frustrating.

I am at a loss here Mike to be totally honest. I receive all those I am subscribed to. I have asked on the support ticket system if there might be any other reason as to why certain users are not receiving them, and they advise that apart from SPAM killer software or blockers, there is no reason why this should not be working fine.
I am happy to get them to check again.

I just don't understand it, John.
before the upgrade, everything was working fine and I haven't installed any new software of that kind. Besides which, my spam software tells me when it intercepts spam. It's odd that I can receive the forum subs, but not the thread ones. And there's some kind of selection going on about them.
I'll have a word with ISP's help line and also change my email address - perhaps if I use my hotmail addres, that might work?
I'll give it a go and let you know.

Hi John,
Didn't work. Still only getting 6 forum subs.
Probably a daft question, but what's subscriptions on tmp?
TheMusicMan
02.02.2006, 08:09
Probably a daft question, but what's subscriptions on tmp? It's when you are automatically notified of any replies to threads you choose to be notified of. If subscribed, you should recieve an email with noptification that there has been a reply since your last visit, the email will also contain a URL to the specific thread subscribed to so you don't have to search for it.

and very useful it is too

Or, if you don't want to get a lot of emails, you can turn that feature off, and then just go to the User Control Panel, where you get a nice list of the threads that you have subscribed to that have posts you haven't read. I use it this way, and, as Mr. Lyons said, it's very useful.

This is really weird folks. I am stumped and will be asking the devs to look at this for me.
EDIT: just as a thought... can those who are not receiving their subscriptions please check that your tMP emails are not being blocked by any Spam Killer applications, and that if you are using MSN or Hotmail - that your inboxes are not full.

I'd forgot about this: I usually have my options set not to receive any subscriptions, but I changed it last week to test things out. No joy here either!
mines working again, just put on the computer to find i had 112 new emails.
thanks john

Yep, me too. It's all working again!!
*waves arm in air again* Its working now
I think mine have stopped working now. I'm pretty sure I know what happened - I made a temporary change to my profile options last night, and since then I haven't received a single one.

Nope - innocent m'Lord. No changes, no tinkering under the hood, nowt 'guv.
Well, that's very odd then! Thanks anyway....
Yay!! mines working now!
Sometimes don't receive a notification, but it usually seems to be about the same time as I logout/mark forums read - not really a problem.

Oops, spoke too soon, they've dried up altogether - got last one just before midnight on Sunday. Any connection with the server change, possibly?

Try clearing out your temporary internet files and cookies, logging out of tMP then back in again, and also perhaps try a forced refresh (ctrl-F5). This will reset all cookies et al and start with a clean plate.
The new server shouldn't have caused any issues with cookies as the domain is still the same - it's just the DNS that has changed.
Please can you let me know how this goes, ta.

Don't think so. Mine work if there is an R in the day - sometimes. One day I'll open up my email to find 40 notifications, then I'll only receive one or two at most for a week or so, then get another 50 in a batch. I'm thinking I'm actually going to turn mine off altogether because it isn't terribly useful when it is as random as that and I just search of new threads manually now instead!
I'm not getting PM or e-mail notifications/subscriptions at the moment - since the server change. Could it have anything to do with that or perhaps the mail server (Exim, etc?) on the dedicated machine?
TheMusicMan

I shall submit a ticket to the datacenter asking if they are aware of any issues as to why this might be happening. Will report back asap... sorry for any inconvenience folks.

erm, whats a subscription notification?! so i dont know if im getting any! tehe
TheMusicMan
28.03.2006, 15:46
You can set the system to send you an email notifying you that a reply has been made to a thread you are subscribed to. You will then get an email informing you of this that contains a URL Link to the latest post in the thread that you have not read. Cool eh... when it works!!!:)

ah ok! well i've not subscribed to anything ... i dont think! but i do get emails whenever i get a PM, so thats working ok! :)
Please add me to the list of people who are not receiving instant e-mail notifications of new postings in subscribed threads.
This is only within the last 24-ish hours or so. I've re-checked all my profiles/options etc., and nothing has changed there.
I've also checked my inbox etc, and am up-to-date with maintenance/disk clean-up etc.
Thanks,
G.
I still don't get them either.
My "default" for notification is "Daily" (maybe that comes into the equation?) - which will apply to this thread.
Maybe I should post to another thread with the setting of "immediate"?
I DO, however, get notifications for PMs - so tMp knows how to get to me and can do so...
Neil.

Right, I have an update for you all. I posted this as an issue with the DataCenter and in addition as a support question with vBulletin. They both advised me to make some technical configuration changes to the way the dedicated server is set up, and have asked that I then ascertain if this has fixed the issue.
So, can those who have been experiencing this email notification issue please post an update in this thread letting me know if you are now receiving email notifications correctly.
NB: Please do ensure though that you have this user option enabled within your UserCP - which you can check by following this;
UserCP > Edit Options > Messaging & Notification > Default Thread Subscription Mode > Instant email notification
Thanks.

Yep, got the instant notification for this very post; first one I have recieved for over a week. No others as yet, but it's perfectly possible no one has posted recently in any of my other subscribed threads.
Thanks,
G.
OK getting others now; seems to be fixed, at least for me.
Thanks,
G.

OK, looking good so far. I have also had a few emails from people informing me that things are again working well.
So it the problem limited to those of us who want daily notification not instant?
Neil
TheMusicMan
02.04.2006, 19:04
Unsure of that Neil sorry. I have only been informed of people not receiving their email notifications. If those are daily or instant I am uncertain sorry,
Yup. Switched notifiation on this thread to "instant" and got one when you replied John. First one I've received in ages as all of my other subscribed threads are Daily or Weekly.
So... it seems that Daily notification isn't working, but Instant is. Maybe that's something for the developers to look into?
Do you get any mail logs out of the machine you can examine to see if the notifications are failing in the BBS code or in the mailer itself (I'd suspect the former!). Are there any BBS generated logs you can look in for error messages? I'd also wonder how the "periodic" notifications are actually processed - presumably on some form of schedule: is that working?
Good luck
Neil.
I've just received a couple of notifications too. I'll keep an eye on it! I wasn't even receiving notifications of pms earlier on in the week!
TheMusicMan
02.04.2006, 20:22
Neil: the 'fix' I applied was only done today and so you would not have had an opportunity to see if the daily notification is now working. Post back this time tomorrow and you will have a better idea.
I've just got a new PM e-mail notification, first one in days, so that's working now. Thanks John. :D
I'm pretty sure that I have instant messaging selected in the UserCP, but the system won't let me in to check...
FlugelD, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.Presumably, I've complicated matters by changing email address when I thought my original address was blocking tmp as spam

This should be fixed for you now. I guess you recently amended your email address and as such would have been asked by the system to confirm this before you would be able to post as a normal user once again. I spotted you hadn't yet done this, so manually confirmed this on your behalf. All should be fine now.

Well, I received the email for this post!
However, I changed address after I'd noticed several threads had been updated, and I hadn't received emails - and, since I wasn't receiving emails, I never got the confirmation one for the new address, so couldn't confirm.....
Thanks, let's see how it goes :tup
All OK now - but still doesn't explain why emails stopped on the day of the server change?
Ah well, why worry...
TheMusicMan
15.04.2006, 09:10
I am not 100% sure what the issue was prior to the server move Derek, but there was a server configuration that wasn't set (not rightly or wrongly - just not set!!) when we moved to the dedicated server. This caused subscription mails not to work.
I asked the datacenter and vBulletin about this which resulted in the datacenter turning something on, hey presto!!

For some reason I seem to have lost mine in the last couple of weeks, I've been on a course for 3 days and a thread that my list says I have subscribed to has had loads of posts but I've had no e-mial notifications! I log in at work and the work server has just been changed, could this be the cause?
Email notifications seem to have dried up again - for a couple of days, they all arrived in a single batch, but for the past couple of days, nothing....
I've checked User CP settings, nothing appears to be amiss there, and there's email from other sources being delivered OK.
Anyone else having this problem, or is it time for me to start getting paranoid? ;)
I've not had any for ages either. I don't mind because i log in almost every day so am able to keep up under my own steam. Nothing had changed for me. changed internet provider but its been happening since way before that.
So it's just me and Di? tMP has stopped sending emails to two houses roughly 2-3 miles apart, but is working for everyone else?
Or is it 'cos we're flugel players....

Hmmm, I have checked the settings, and the default is still to receive instant email notifications. I'm currently subscribed to over 500 threads (and some have had recent updates...)
The email address in question is rather basic - no spam settings (that are user-accessible, anyway) - so I've changed to a different address, and I'll get in touch with the email admin to see if they have any ideas (although other mail arrives OK)

Yes and yes. I check my junk mail every time I log in too (barely get 2 a day in it) and my subscribed threads are all present and correct which is how I currently check them. I have changed nothing but the stopped a good year ago.
I'm with Derek, 2 flugelers in close proximity?...... its a conspiracy I tell you!!!! ;)
I changed email address, and notifications now arriving OK.
So now, of course, I'm going to change back...
And, having gone back to the previous email address, everything seems to be OK.

Well I have kept the same email address since I joined........ done nothing to it apart from change my background to pink....... damn this need for aesthetic pleasingness!!!
