How many Band's play Carols on Christmas Morning?
I personally have never ventured out with a band on Christmas morning and know of only one band that still continue this tradition on Christmas Day (Cricklade Band - Swindon, and I think they start at 6.00 a.m.!!!!!)
How many bands still do this?
Does Midnight Mass count ?
11.15 - the early hours ?

Ramsey Town Band in the Isle of Man play at the local hospital on Christmas morning, should say they used to until very recently, I would imagine they're still doing the same.

My old band used to go round the local hospital on Christmas afternoon. It was a great excuse for getting away from the relatives for a few hours not to mention great fun since most people had had rather too much christmas spirit (I have some very scary recollections of our Eb Bass player sitting in the lift and playing cause he could only just stand up, someone had to hold the door open for him. After a while we left it close  ).

Hadleigh Temple Band has a number of visits every year. Christmas Eve includes visits to a couple of retirement homes, a street party and local pubs and clubs, and Christmas morning we visit Basildon Hospital. On each occasion the ensemble is made up of those bandsmen who are available, providing a reasonable balance is achieved, and we are usually very well received, particularly at the hospital.

How late is this reply?
Wantage band walk round the town on Christmas morning, playing carols, but this pales in comparison to the activities of the Aldbourne band who play carols from the top of the Aldbourne church tower at 4 a.m.!

Onchan Silver Band in the Isle of Man used to venture out on Xmas morning...not sure if they still do. I have to admit though, that during about 17 years as a member, I never once turned up!

I once played for a band that did some carol playing on christmas day but, since I'm rarely capable of walking for most of christmas day, let alone driving 25 miles to the bandroom, I never quite made it.

When I played with Lanner & District silver band, we always went out on Christmas day morning. It was great, everyone came out of their houses and there was loads of sherry and mince pies going round.
It really used to add to the day
My old and home town band, Wetherby and District Silver go out round the streets of Wetherby every night in the week leading up to Christmas, and on Christmas morning itself. They've been doing that for as long as I can remember, and although not strictly 'busking', it provides the band with a hefty sum of income for the year by the time they've finished. Its been part of my Christmas since I started playing and I wouldn't really know what to do on Christmas Day if we didn't do it. Find a lampost, two verses, another tune while the nobblers leg it round the houses and then onto another lampost. Great fun when you can't move your fingers cos its so chuffin cold.

My old band, Drogheda Brass band, plays at 2 hospitals every year from 11 until 1pm every xmas day. Its good crack, past members come along and grab an instrument and have a blow + we get a free feed from the hospitals!!!!

Sheringham Salvation Army Band play every christmas morning. They have a marching band through the town before heading off to the local hospitals to perform carols for the patients and bring gifts.
I missed their performance at Christmas 2001, but awoke to the sound of them playing my favourite carol 'Once In Royal David's City', down my mobile, courtesy of my fiance :D
Very nice it was too!

Apparently, before my time in the band, they use to march around the town and bring in the new year, is this done anywhere here ?

A couple of years ago we were asked to participate in the 'march' through Cardiff City Centre to the City Hall for the new year Calennig organised by the County Council. We did not manage to march but ambled the mile behind jugglers, clowns and stiltwalkers who managed to end up in the middle of the band. It was certainly a different evening and we were finished by 8 pm ( starting at 7) There was quite a useful donation which swelled the bands coffers.
Players from St Austell Band go around the local old people's homes every Christmas morning and play carols.
Dungarvan band play at midday mass every Christmas morning/afternoon in St Mary's Parish Church Dungarvan
We sure do! It's actually enjoyable, not at all a chore. Christmas wouldn't be Christmas if we didn't go!

Two of my previous bands used to play on christmas day, Porthywaen used to go out around the local village and finish off in the pub.
Llangollen used to go out on Christmas morning to the local hospital, and play for the old folks.
I used to look forward to it every year.

I can say with great relief that Canton Band do not play on Christmas day.
As a Salvation Army bandsman we play in Cardiff city centre every Thursday evening and Saturday from about 28th November up to Christmas. Obviously we also play in our services on a Sunday and visit hospitals and retirement homes on Sundays as well. We usually have another engagement each week of December e.g. Rotary concert, concert in local garden centre.
I am also Songster (choir) leader. We sing in our services and at retirement homes during the week.
Two of my children are in the junior band and have to be transported to their carolling sessions and engagements at school fetes etc. and my youngest is in the junior choir with attendant engagements. If you add on School concerts and carol services not to mention our annual works 'do' I find myself in the house only to sleep and sometimes eat in the 30 days prior to Christmas day.
On Christmas day I re-introduce myself to the family!!!!!

At Peterborough we play every Christmas morning from 10 - 12, starting off at the hospital then splitting in to two bands and going to three other venues.
The atmosphere is normally good and we get a warm welcome from most people we visit. Home in time for christmas lunch. :D
Having said all that, this year it was a real chore to go out as it was our first Christmas with our baby boy and didn't want to miss two hours with him. Once there it was ok though.

Gwernaffield do - in the church adjacent to our bandroom.
Whitworth play on the streets on Xmas day finishing off in the band club.
They have only missed going out on one year since the 2nd world war due to lack of players.

Hello,
I played in Bradwell Silver Band and the band plays every christmas day 6am start till about 830 am as a small child i loved waking up listening to the band, and from the age of 11 started playing in the mornings. Through my later teens became abit harder due to the alcohol i had on christmas eve. The band only missed christmas morning through the war. Its great even in the cold and wet weather. Fantastic atmosphere.

Burbage (Buxton) do, we go round the village of Burbage plus some old folks homes. We traditionally play Christians Awake as our first carol in the car park of the Duke of York Pub in the village. The band has tradiionally played this as the first carol every year on christmas day since the formation of the band.
We also pay on christmas eve night and every 2 years we share and alernate the Boxing Day concert with Fairfield Buxton band for the High Peak Mayors charity in the Pavilion gardens octogen hall (the stage where Buxton contest takes place) The room is absolutley packed and is sold out before December!! The concert is the envy of so many local players and bands in the area

We (Stacksteads Band) play on Christmas Day in Stacksteads and end up in the Jolly Sailor in Waterfoot. It's a voluntary job and around 8/9 of us are there.
I'm 20 years old and have only spent one christmas day at home due to being dragged around in the pram and now playing in the band :)
My old band (Tyldesley) used to play carols in the streets over several days (including Christmas Day) during the 1980’s. I have some great memories. I guess that other priorities have taken over and they now only go out on New Year’s Day.
