View Full Version : A band with no horns - split from dreams thread.

I had a horrible dream the other day :(

I dreampt that Sandy Smith didn't come to the auditions and said he wouldn't do the tutoring for the week at NYBB, So, Philip Biggs said, "well if there isn't a horn tutor, how are the horns meant to learn the pieces, they can't be in the band if they cant play the pieces, this means we dont have a full band... (this is the bad bit)... WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO CANCELL THE COURSE!! At which point I started crying, and then he came up to me and said that I wasn't good enough for the band and wouldn't be allowed back permanently!! Unless I showed him some proof of a Grd 8 or something, but he wouldn't accept that certificate because it wasn't an orchestral exam ! So, I wasn't allowed in NYBB again, and I went home and got an orange yogurt out of the fridge and sat and cried on the sofa! :(

It was a sad dream! :(

LOL! A band without horns, wow that would be a dream!!:D

you're not related to uncle duncan are you by any chance? ;)

I'll pretend I didn't hear that!

If I said it again, put it in bold, italics, and underlined it would it help?

Vickitorious
29.07.2005, 00:38
Nope! I'll still.. "pretend"

Either that or I'll call my mum .. (dinie) and get her to edit it!! :p So that no further horn players are insulted!

hehe!

jingleram
29.07.2005, 00:41
Haha yes i realised the connection. I have nothing against horn players, just the instruments they play, because they are, afterall just miniature baritones!

Vickitorious
29.07.2005, 00:45
Hehehe! No.. you see thats where you're wrong.. Baritones are just BIG horns! ;)

But if what you were saying there was because you don't like baritones.. then... horns aren't related at all.. they were just an idea someone came up with a whiile ago ?

:p

jingleram
29.07.2005, 00:48
I had this conversation 3 days ago with a friend, and managed to relate every instrument in the band to the euphonium, because all brass life stems from the euphonium! If you want to choose to play a fake instrument that's fine by me!

Vickitorious
29.07.2005, 00:51
Hmmm... that can't work!! Lets just relate everything to the HORN.. because ages and ages ago some clever chappie made a cow 'horn' thing into a 'horn' lol! then a trumpet thing.. called.. you gottit.. a 'horn' :p ..

I think I'm going to get modded by my own mum in a minute..

That would be totally uncool!

Guess who's a baritone player??? Hmm mm, thats right. ;)

Thought the split in threads was inevitable really! There is nothng wrong with baritones, I love them almost as much as euphs! I was putting your daughter the HORN PLAYER in her place. Please forgive me (in the knowledge that she plays HORN not baritone or euphonium).

Vickitorious
29.07.2005, 00:57
I'm not strong enough to play baritone or euphonium.. they're too heavy :(

Don't worry, I'm sure she deserves everything she gets ;)

Haha interesting thing is, I had a conversation with an M.D. last year about what he would put in 'Room 101' if he could, and his very first answer was second horn players! With no prompting from me, a prestigious Conductor (he who must not be named) would get rid of second horns!

(Just jesting :) :))

Quiet right, as much fun as this has been i must insist the lil madam gets some sleep, big weekend ahead and all that. But I dare say she'll be back to continue the horns defence tomorrow, backed up by another horn player. ;)

I dont.. It would mean going to the gym or using my brothers weights to build up muscles to be able to hold it.. It's not worth the effort..

Anyway.. My mouth isn't big enough for the mouthpiece!

jingleram
29.07.2005, 01:27
Aww cmon the baritone is marginally heavier than the horn, and granted the mouthpiece is quite alot bigger, but the sound quality is so much better! Just think no more dodgy split register between G's and A's! And who knows, it may one day lead onto euphonium!!!

Ok let's put it like this. The tenor horn is to the flugel horn what the clarinet is to the oboe.

Dave Payn
29.07.2005, 01:40
Perhaps, Jingleram but I could start a conversation about French horns (I've done that before on this forum..... with particular reference to the possibility of French horns' inclusion in brass bands! Boy, did that start something! :))

Vickitorious
29.07.2005, 01:42
The flugel sounds like a duck and the horn is a swan!

Anyways, I'm going to have to call it a night and go to bed!! I'll be back to defend the horns though!

Night night x

jingleram

Okay, be sure to do so. Night night, don't let the tenor horns bite!

With what particular reference to french horns? Their replacement of tenor horns? Interesting thought!

GRRR!!! Maybe I will move onto first like Robert said I should if Im going to be gotten rid of

A brass band without tenor horns would be rubbish, a brass band without any of the instruments that are in it would be rubbish (that includes percussion by the way(I spelt it wrong didnt I?.).)

Maybe I'm to blame here, I think I did Tenor Horns in general a disservice by calling them instruments! Unfair of me really to put them in the same sphere as euphoniums, baritones, basses, cornets, perc. etc...!! ;)

Tenor horns are vital to the band! They are the draft excluder between the flugel and the baris (providing your band is set out like mine). They are only allowed to play because it stops them from talking.

DaveR

No, as a horn player I have to agree with vickitorious on this one - horns are definitely the best...

I think youre wrong but you should know that anything can be classed as an instrument even recorders
But if you think about it bands wouldnt be the same if you took any instrument away from it, you need all of them to make it sound like it does...

jingleram
29.07.2005, 15:40
You are of course right, anything can be classed as an instrument, even horns so I'm told. But a musical instrument, now that's different! Maybe a recorder, bagpipes, or even a saucepan, but a horn, a musical instrument, no way!

If you cant class a tenor horn as a musical instrument then I dont see how you managed to class a recorder as one. They are the most annoying thing in the world (excluding my brother) and make a horrible squeaky noise when beginners attempt to play them and an extremely annoying noise when played by somone who can play them, In my opinion which is slightly biased as I hate recoders, due to being forced to play one for years at primary school then two years after I was allowed to stop being forced to play it at secondary school

One annoying thing about playing horn is that you dont get them in orchestras and there isnt another brass instrument that does play in an orchestra with the same or even similar sized mouthpiece. (I was about to write 'com' in after the full stop...)

After all, if bands didn't have horns, then Vickitorius, yonhee, HorniKaz, Ju33les and co would have nothing to do when they aren't posting on TMP.

30.07.2005, 17:13
So he has 3?!?!?!?! Lol far too many imo. Have been told he is a rock drummer, and a very good one at that! Is he planning on merging the 3 kits to make a superkit? That would be rather loud!

Di
30.07.2005, 17:23
Aye, he getting to be quite useful with a pair of sticks. ;) Both as a rock drummer and as the kit player in the B Band. :) He started off with an ordinary kit, which he still has, and takes out to use at band engagements. We bought him an electronic kit, (he thinks it was for him, but its soooo much quiter for us ;) ). He would LIKE to take his own kit when he goes to rock school, not very practical with his ordinary kit, its enough of a job lugging it all down stairs, unpacking, setting up, dismantling, repacking and lugging back up stairs for band gigs let alone every week for rock school too! :( So what he now has is a Traps flat kit mounted on frame which sits nicely, ready assembled (except the cymbals) in the back of the car. A to B, load cymbals and ready to rock and roll. :D
