http://www.themouthpiece.com/images/firefox.jpgFireFox 1.0 Released

The time is finally here; Firefox 1.0 - one of, if not the the best browser ever to hit the web was scheduled for release on 9th Nov and - true to form - it has just been released and is labelled version 1.0: FireFox.

You can get it now from www.mozilla.org - but you will have to join the millions of others who are also attempting to download the applciation at the same time.

"Firefox empowers you to browse faster, more safely, and more efficiently than with any other browser."

Normally I wouldn't inform this as tMP news, but heck, as it seems many of us use Firefox over Internet Explorer already, and it is a great Open Source product... I think it fits here just fine!

Yay for Firefox!

If you're not sure why you should switch from using Internet Explorer, have a look here (http://www.switch2firefox.com) .

Probably because the servers were delivering millions of downloads... the release date has been know for a while.

Keep trying, I have managed to get the skin I have been using for a while from the themes site today.

It's great!

Honestly folks... there is no comparison at all between IE and Firefox... Firefox is simply streets ahead. You get tabbed browsing - something that will be a totally new experience to IE users, you can change the theme, add additional applications such as mouse gestures and document managers... it is far better.

For example, I have a mouse gesture extension installed which allows me to use a combination of holding the right mouse button down and moving the mouse to carry out certain tasks. I can open a new window by holding right button and moving down, I can go back a page by holding right mouse and moving left, forward by right mouse and moving right etc.... I can type 'tmp' in the address bar and get to here... it really is far better.

Go on... try it... you can get for free from here (http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates&id=26145&t=70) or click the logo

I have briefly tried Firefox and to be honest - it doesn't seem any quicker than IE. I have an NTL broadband connection.

How does "tabbed browsing" differ from having an IE icon on the task bar at the bottem of the monitor, and using this to open multiple windows on IE??

I am not being critical of Firefox - it just seems like I have missed the point somewhere.......

Hiya - well I have 4 pages set as my home page, so when I open Firefox, I automatically get tMP, my gmail, and a couple of other pages. Instead of 4 instances of my browser appearing and having to switch between them I can have them all in one window. (I can have as many as I like just these are my default ones). If I'm in tMP I can see that the title to the Gmail tab changes when mail comes in, so I don't have to keep checking it...

I find that it is faster, I have broadband, but if it's not faster for you, then I'm not going to argue. Each to her/his own

Thanks for that reply Kirtsy - but how do you set four "home pages"?

In tools >> options >> general >> homepage

type something like this:

http://www.themouthpiece.com|http://www.google.com|http://www.4barsrest.com|http://here.com|

all separated by |

LOL - so that's why you were asking me, Ben! ;)

There's another way, save the bookmarks for the pages you want to be your home pages into a folder on their own, then instead of typing them all in, choose the folder by clicking on "use bookmark".. hey presto!

Another FireFox Hint: If you have a mouse with a centre button on it - try clicking on a link on a www page with that middle button... it opens up the link in a new tab...:)

FireFox Hint #2:Use CTRL-Enter to type "www...com" quickly.

Once you are in the address bar, there is no need to type the http:// prefix or the www. or the .com domain names. Simply type the middle portion of the desired web site address into the address bar, and then press CTRL-Enter.

e.g. If you type themouthpiece and press CTRL-Enter, you will go to http://www.themouthpiece.com... good eh!!!

Another FireFox Hint: If you have a mouse with a centre button on it - try clicking on a link on a www page with that middle button... it opens up the link in a new tab...:) You can also close a tab by middle clicking on it. That saves you about 5 milliseconds compared to right clicking on the tab and selecting "close tab" from the popup menu... ;)

Another hint: make sure that in tools > options > advanced, you select the "begin finding when you begin typing" option. Whenever you're searching now for a specific word in a page with lots of text, you can just start typing the word, and Firefox will start searching in the document (a new search bar will appear at the bottom of your firefox window)

Seeing as quite a few Tmpers (myself included) have switched to Firefox and are quite new to it, would it be worthwhile setting up some kind of "Firefox Clinic Thread" cos all these tips and tricks are great and I can't wait for more!!!

Re: the bloke who didn't think it made much difference to the speed of his browsing, Firefox has increased the speed of mine no end, it all loads so much faster!! I now have really really slow internet as opposed to really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really slow internet!!

 :D

i've been having a few probs with firefox! sometimes it comes up with a box saying the document containes no data (or sumut like that anyway!).

anyway if you have this, it's apparently something to do with panda anti virus. if you turn off panda, it works ok At my parent's computer, I noticed the same thing, but I tought it had something to do with their hardware firewall (they have an external ethernet ADSL modem). But they also have Panda Antivirus, so maybe you're right. I'll test it when I get home. I also thought it only happened when I open too many tabs shortly after each other. Usually reloading or reopening the page solves the problem (just click the link again)

defo panda, i did a bitof reaserch on it. i have it turned off at the mo and firefox is rilliant! I'd be carefull with that. It's not because you use an inherently (sp?) safer browser, that you're no longer susceptible to computer viruses! Hopefully Panda and Mozilla can solve this problem soon...

It has versions for all platforms too, so when I get you all to ditch Windows and use Linux you can still use Firefox :D
