Having just listened to Listen to the Band, and a number of the semi-finalists participating in this year’s Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist Award, am I being unrealistic, or indeed unfair, in thinking that these fine young people are perhaps over-stretching themselves in their choice of solo material?

It’s wonderful to know that there is such excellent talent coming through the ranks, but I believe that perhaps a little too much emphasis is being placed on technical wizardry, at the expense, dare I say it, of producing wonderfully sounding music? Or is it simply the case of the contestants being expected to include very difficult solos as part of their presentation?

I have to say I agree with you, I always look at players my age playing virtuosic pieces with little emotion, just a flurry of notes.

I'd pick a slow melody or an old theme and variations anyday!

Let's hope they broadcast Jonny's performance of "A Time for Peace" next week then.
