World number one brass band to visit telford

    The well known nationally acclaimed Showband from the Abraham Darby Academy, Madeley Telford are delighted and honoured to welcome the Cory Brass Band from South Wales, led by their Musical Director Robert Childs to a Joint Grand Charity Concert to be held on Saturday 28th February 2009 at Telford College of Arts and Technology, Wellington, commencing at 7.30 pm. Abraham Darby Academy are partners within the Haberdashers’ Adams’ Federation along with Adams Grammar School, Newport. Proceeds from the Concert are to be split between the local Severn Hospice and also to assist with fundraising towards the Academy’s Showband return visit to the New York International Wind Band Festival in March 2010. The Academy’s Showband will be performing at the evening showpiece concert on the stage of the world famous Carnegie Hall, following their highly successful visit in 2007. Cory Brass Band are currently ranked as the number one Brass Band in the world according to the latest rankings from Cory Brass Band are the current European Champions and current Brass in Concert Champions. The concert will be compered by Eric Smith of BBC Radio Shropshire
    Formed in 1884, 2009 sees the band celebrating their 125th anniversary and hail from the Rhondda Valley in South Wales and were originally called the Ton Temperance Band. Cory Brass Band are led by their Musical Director Robert Childs who was born and bred in Tredegar, Robert Childs an Associate of the Royal College of Music, a Fellow of the London College of Music, and gained a distinction in a Master’s Degree from the University of Leeds.
    Robert Childs has conducted and performed all over the banding world. He was principal euphonium and Bandmaster of Black Dyke Band for ten years, winning the European, British Open and National Championships. In his capacity as Bandmaster he conducted concert performances with Susanna Walton, Lesley Garret, Philip Smith, James Watson and The Beautiful South. In May 2000 Robert accepted the invitation to become Music Director of the Buy As You View Cory Band.
    Robert steered Cory to the British Open and the National Championships of Great Britain in 2000 and were runner up in the European Championships the following year.
    He has also developed the Cory Band’s musical horizons. They are ‘Band in Residence’ at the Welsh College of Music and Drama, where Robert is Director of Band Studies.
