    2. what concerts and competitions a band does? A and C

Basically I think the conductor should have control over all the musical desicions in the band. Committees that try to go beyond administrative roles annoy the hell out of me...

As the commitee is an elected body to act upon the best inerests of the band I think that they should work closely with the conductor to ensure that every decision made - is done so with the bands very best interests at heart.

I'd think if a conductor got out voted on this one it would cause problems with the relationship between the conductor and that section, especially if he wasn't happy with their performances...

I'll try and collect and present the results once this thread dies down a bit (or if someone else would like to volunteer then by all means do it!)

I see what you mean, and would understand the conductor's frustration... however on the other side of the coin it's very easy for a conductor to move people up and down, it's the committee that has to pick up the pieces and find new players if people have sulked and leave because they don't like to be moved down. That's why I've put it as a joint decision between conductor and committee.

I dont agree with giving the comitee too much involvement in actual in-rehearsal decisions... The commitee hire a conductor to get results... to get results... you have to follow your conductors every instruction... Too many cooks spoil... Very often committee's can cause more problems and arguements than they solve...

Especially if the committee thinks they are better musically educated than they really are. I agree...there is a reason why you pay a conductor to run the band at rehearsals so let him/her do it.

    Which very often they do...

They should leave musicians to make musical decisions...

Committee's are to arrange Concerts, Contests (to an extent), Finances, Hotels, Coaches, Personel (non-musical) and Hiring Conductors...

If someone's going to sulk and leave because they were moved, do you want them in your band anyway? I know sometimes it's hard for bands to be picky, but I can't see the logic behind keeping a worse player in a top chair because changing things would make them throw their toys out...

I'd much prefer to be demoted by a conductor than a committee anyway...

'The good of the band' should always be top priority...

If you feel unhappy about a decision made for 'The good of the band', then you are not a team player and should get a new hobby like stamp collecting...

At the risk of confusing things, I've answered as far as I can from the point of view of the SA band that I play in, where clearly some areas do not apply in the same way.

    Who should decide...

    1. what music gets played? C (but open to suggestions from the band)
    2. what concerts (and competitions) a band does? B&C together (competitions n/a)
    3. if a rehearsal should be cancelled? C
    4. who plays in what chair? C
    5. if a player should be sacked? Would not normally happen as there are no limits on numbers, unless it was an issue of misconduct, when other disciplinary matters would apply
    6. what time the bus leaves for a contest? C (together with Band Secretary)
    7. who gets to do a solo in a concert/competition? C
    8. travelling expenses? B

In some bands the committee chooses who sits where, not the conductor. I think that's wrong. Also like I've explained a ruthless conductor could cause players to sulk and leave because they've been demoted. This is why I think it should be a joint decision.

I see your point, but in that case I think it goes back to the committee to get a new conductor.
