Got in last night after band, indian in hand.
Rather than watching the usual late night rhetoric I stuck Snatch on.

Bullet Tooth Tony (Vinny Jones) from Snatch, has to be the best character in a film EVER and he's not even one of the main guys! The manner in which he delivers the "mincy, faggot balls" speech whilst having two guns pointed in his face is pure genius.
Anyone have any other contenders for BEST CHARACTER IN A FILM?

I don't know about "best" characters, but three of my favourite characters both come from films with military settings:

1: Sean Connery's character in "The Hill", a rebel who succeeds in beating the system through his own strength and endurance, only for his victory to be undermined when his "friends" beat up the bully who'd been tormenting him.

2: Richard Attenborough's Sergeant Major in "Guns at Batasi", who successfully holds out against rebel insurgents, and blows up their artillery just as the news comes through that the former "rebels" have just been recognised as the new government. He ends up as the scapegoat, and the final scene shows him marching smartly off the parade ground, his career at an end.

3: Alec Guiness's Major in "Tunes of Glory". He has made things so awkward for John Mills as the new CO that he eventually kills himself. Then comes the scene where Alec Guiness, his mind apparently on the turn, sets about planning a funeral with full military honours and ceremony - hard to put across, but gets to me every time.

How about Kato from 'The Pink Panther' movies? He's the one who turned Inspector Clouseau's apartment into a 'Chinese Nookie Factory' when he thought he had died. Those movies are just fantastically funny
