What is it about the Sage and the number 1 draw? :(

Cory did OK off number 1 on the first visit to the Sage in 2005 but since then? - four 10ths and two 12ths :(
Check out the tale of woe here

In 35 years, no band has won BiC off a number 1 draw so maybe the recent history is not too surprising and you actually need to go back to 1988 to find a win from the first three bands to play. Maybe they should just remove the numbers 1, 2 and 3 from the hat when they make the draw:)

Number 1 is no different to any other draw, dare say if you can be bothered to compare the stats for all other draw placings you would get similar results.

Surely it's not where you draw it's who draws where?

You are correct, of course, but the fact is that Britannia BS winning off no 2 in 1988 is the only time in 35 years that a band has won from the first quarter of the draw. In a field of uniformly world class bands throughout the draw, that doesn't seem plausible to me. Adding weight to the idea of an early draw curse is that 11 bands have won from the 2nd 'quartile', 13 bands from the 3rd and 10 from the 4th.

    Lies, damned lies, ...

If it was "uniformly world class bands" then you'd be correct but they aren't really. If you were to add rankings/form to the draw position then those that have done well drawn in the first quartile would have done well on paper wherever they drew and those that haven't weren't expected to?

It's up to the adjudicators to be able to remember the quality of each performance and mark each one fairly regardless of the draw. Seems like the best draw seems to be number 9 at BiC with 7 winners.
