OK.... this stems from a previous thread...I'm sure we don't eat, sleep and breathe banding all the time!

What does everyone do career-wise and any other hobbies?

I'll start the ball rolling, I'm a dentist by day and when I'm not at band or practising ( :? ) I enjoy reading, shopping, latin dancing, drama, cross stitch and spending hours on the phone! Oh, and when I'm not doing this I have to study for my diploma in general practice and clock up my Continuing Professional Development hours!

My ambitions? To be in a West End musical and to put a few more hours into the day.... :)

I study Chemistry at uni, which involves walking round the building in a white coat carrying a sheet of paper with a funny graph on pretending to be dead clever and in deep thought! After a few hours of this I go home and watch Columbo/Quincey/Diagnosis Murder. They also have these things called lectures... not too sure what goes on in those! :D

I'm a telecommunications engineer working in Nottingham, and when I'm not at band (shifts and wife allowing  ) I enjoy going to the theatre, listening to Heavy Metal, browsing the interweb, a bit of web "design", Tetley Bitter, Leeds United ( ), Yorkshire Cricket (also  ) , reading SciFi and Fantasy and shopping on QVC.

I am just winding down my classic car restoration business.

After some 6 years as a specialist Opel / Vauxhall classic repair & spares shop, our units were taken down to make way for Terminal 5 at Heathrow, so rather than relocate in such an expensive area, I now just supply parts from home.

I am looking to change direction now as well. I teach privately, and am trying to muscle in on local music schools and colleges.

  6. When I'm not at band - which is most of the time -

I'm at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama which is pretty cool.
I am really into ska & punk & reggae & similar genres, and I enjoy going to loads of gigs!
And I'm looking for a part time job!
Going out with my friends (mostly gigs!)
    Oh and sleeping :D

Ooh yeah, everyone! I got on the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Wales this year (I was only a reserve but they're doing Mahler 1 and need lots of horns!)

Don't want an knackered Vauxhall Carlton do you? :) ABS went and that was the log that smashed the camels spine...

Actually you may be able to help, my Son has just started learning to play cornet (had his first lesson last night he really enjoyed it, even managed a note or two!) and is going to Egham Band's training school. Though I was considering getting him some extra lessons as I know from experience how frustrating it can be at first. What sort of abilities are you looking at? (I know some teachers who aren't keen on kids who can't play, I'd teach him but it's a bit like teaching you're kids/other half to drive... don't do it...) and (roughly) how much would you charge?

What, you have time for things other than band and work? I must be doing something wrong here!!! LOL

Well by day I teach Science (mainly Biology). I go swimming and I also like to play pool and have a few drinks  I try to spend time as much time as possible with my friends and loved ones (queue um_chuck to have a go about not spending enough quality time with my niece!). I spent too much time messing around on the web and I do a bit of web-design, the latest being Bestwood's site :D Finally I seem to get myself involved in committees/organisation stuff....I have just agreed to be contest sec for our band , I do their website, am a committee member and do tMP.com stuff as well. At least that is still less than when I was at uni when I was president of Musicsoc, social sec for the concert band and web-designer, as well as web-designer for Dronfield CMW. That topped with 4 rehearsals a week didn't leave much time for anything other than band!!!!

To earn my crust I am the building manager for an office block just off Oxford Circus, so I am in the ranks of the commuter, travelling in and out by train each day. As well as playing in the band I sing in our choir, and I'm currently the corps (church) secretary, which occasionally entails additional weeknight meetings. Leaving the house at 5.20 and returning at 8pm or 10.30pm (practice nights) does not leave a lot of time for other activities, but I enjoy reading, doing crosswords and listening to music.

One advantage I do have is that I am able to play music at work, although I need to stop when things get busy. I am also able to access the computer to keep up to date with all theMouthPiece goings-on. I also play saxophone in The Salvation Army Symphonic Wind Ensemble, a group that meets about 3 times a year for an afternoon rehearsal followed by an evening concert.

oops I forgot..I also do some part-time seminar sessions at Nottingham Trent Uni on Statistics for Biologists. This makes Thursdays interesting as I leave at 7.15 for work, go straight to uni for seminar and then straight to band for rehearsal. I get home at about 11.30 :? Thank god fridays are quiet!!

Good idea for a thread this Cornetgirl!!

When I'm not at Band I have loads to keep me occupied, not least being my 2 boys (Liam 6 and Matthew 4 ). I am a qualified Nursery Nurse but am currently 'a lady of leisure' (ha! ha!) looking after my children, school runs, washing, ironing, cleaning etc!! . We are also foster parents so have the odd 'extra' every now and then! We have also been approved to adopt and hope to adopt a little girl soon!
I run a music group at the local church and help out with the youth club there. I also run the local mums and toddlers group.
Whilst most of my interests outside banding involve children I also spend most Sunday afternoons with my other love....Rugby League!
NO..not playing....but supporting Swinton Rugby League team!!!

I work as an accounts assistant for a firm of consulting engineers in Headingley.

Weekends and evenings are spent playing squash and pottering around in my greenhouse. I also like doing cross-stitch, something I took up to help me give up smoking!! And it worked, just gone passed the 6 months barrier.

No kids in our house, just 2 nutty cats!
