We have two of our key players away on the 14th March due to work. Not only did Mark our Soprano get sent to Afghanistan but now Andrew our bass trombone has to work that day.
Luckily for us our entire front row of cornets have all played soprano before so we got a volunteer on that seat but bass trombones (and as good as Andrew) are flipping rare. Again luckily for us some one is defecting from another band to help us out so there is still some point in starting rehearsals...

Here's a full list of bands in South West Region. (see above)
You may have to contact the wesbmaster to see if the list is up-to-date mind.

I only wish the Welsh Region had a website!! We're missing from the predictor too!!! Only our lot don't like computers! New fandangled things!

    split draw?

Does anyone know if its a split draw for this years 4th section? (like last year) I've heard that it may not be despite there being 19 bands attending? If there isnt then this seams is a bit unfair on those bands travelling 2-3 hours to be there for early morning and then not play until 6 hours later.

Should hope everybody is practising hard.
The question is how often do you practice leading up to the weekend?
Do you rehearse twice a week to keep the music fresh and you feel as you are on the edge of your seat on the day, or do you practice 4 or 5 times that week so as you are totally prepared but, risk losing the edge to your piece.
i vividly recall listening to Brunel Brass at Torquay last year and i thought how fresh and vibrant the performance sounded. I wonder how many times they practise during the final weeks? I also listened to cross keys band at weston-super-mare 08 and thought the same thing. There is a fine line between practising just enough but not too much.

I was so pleased to hear that Brunel had been promoted to the third section this year and look forward to listening to them on saturday to see how they perform. I have followed this band since their debut in the 4th section two years ago and have yet to hear a poor performance.

Best of luck to all the west of England bands on the weekend, let the battle commence.

Well, if your struggling with the piece then extra rehersals are needed, but if you have it nailed weeks ago, then perhaps there is no need to over do it and risk getting bored.

We've been pracing twice weekly with just a bunch of extra rehersals planned around the weekend just to focus the mind on the task ahead and make the final touches.

Thank you for the nice comments about Brunel Brass Maryellan. We normally practice once a week for one and a half hours but have practiced twice a week for the final two weeks. Great reliance is placed on the members practicing individually and their responsibility to one another. This will be our debut in the third section on a testpiece that has its challenges, we hope for a good performance similar to that of last year at Torquay and at the Finals in Harrogate, however any band is only as good as it's last performance. Consistency in playing standards and a performance with musicality is all one can hope for. Good luck to all the bands and their endeavours in Torquay this weekend.
