The Brighouse & Rastrick Band has proudly announced the appointment of Nigel Weeks as its new Resident Conductor, with immediate effect. The appointment, which follows the departure of David Hirst earlier in 2005, comes ahead of an exciting year for the band in 2006, when it will celebrate its 125th anniversary. Since David’s departure the band has worked with several guest conductors as well as its Professional Musical Director, James Gourlay. Said the band’s Press Officer, Andrew Wilkinson: “Since the departure of David Hirst early this year the band has been kept on an even keel through the support of a variety of guest conductors who have kept the band well rehe****d and taken it through its busy concert schedule. Sincere thanks are expressed to all those conductors who have helped in any way, large or small. Their hard work has always been given with enthusiasm and in the very best spirit of brass banding. Thank you all.” Nigel Weeks takes over as Resident Conductor after returning from working and living in New Zealand where he had a hugely successful period with the Dalewool Auckland Band winning the New Zealand Brass Band Championships in 1995, 1996, 1998, 2003, 2004 and the Australian Championships in 1996, 1997 and 2001. Originally from South Wales, Nigel is a former Musical Director of the Tredegar Band with which he experienced much success including appearances at the National Championships and European Championships.
