It's been a while since I was a pollster so I thought it time for a new one. Great to see my original list be updated and used to such an extent. This time I'm now interested to know what we regard as the best performances of all time. Those performances which left you spellbound, which moved you, even perhaps inspired you to play more yourself. Those legendary performances that won contests out the park and even those which didn't but should have!!

As like before either PM me your top ten IN ORDER (1 the highest and 10 the lowest) or email to Top choice gets ten points and tenth gets one. I want the band, the piece and the contest. Entries by Thursday 3rd May please.

    Please take part!! Cheers.

    Good thread Martyn.

I will do it later, but 9it made me instantly remember Foden's playing 'Les Preludes' at the Open in Birmingham (2001). Won it out of the park but they didn't!!!

Another best performance I have heard lately was your dad recently playing Golden Slippers. Watched it one someone's camera phone at the weekend. Not pretty but don't worry, I told him so! :grnsm

Interesting you should say that. I was thinking about what to vote for and one of the first performances that came to mind was the YBS (winning) performance at the open. I've heard the recording of it since and it is fantastic - especially from about half way through to the end. Still, horses for courses and this is exactly the reason this is such a good topic for a thread / survey.

I'll have to think hard to get all ten, but a few for starters:

Desford - Harmony Music - National Finals circa 1989
Fodens / Brittannia - Year of the Dragon - Europeans mid 90's?
    Dyke - Extreme Makeover - Europeans 2005
Thinking also of Desford on YotD at the Europeans and Faireys on Isiah:40 at the Nationals but there are loads so I just :dunno

They didn't have camera phones in the early 80's did they??! When was he playin that?! Actually we had old tapes out the other night. Ah the days when folk would record every SA Festival! That's when there was more than 4 a year.

Get thinking and cheers for the music. Should be fun tonight.

    Fave live performances

My equal top 2 would have to be:

Desford on Odin in 1989 Nat finals
Desford on Seascapes in 1988 finals

    Can't split them.

Playing it in the house, mate, along to a World of Brass DVD. Ask him for a look at it. It's accompanied by David Daws and the ISB! Sheer class!

The only problem with a vote such as this is you had to have been there!
I would include the Leyland performance of Cloudcatcher from a No.1 draw at the Nationals as a clear one that got away and my no.1 best contest performance - but of course, if you didn't hear them on the day, you can't vote for it!
(by the time Dyke ,who won, played, I'd heard enough and missed them)

Would have to have a considerable think about a top ten, but Grimeys win at the RAH with New Jerusalem would have to be up there with the greatest eh?

    Great thread! A real thinker....
I would say that Brittania in the 90's playing YotD at Cardiff. Just awesome.

Fairey's 1993 national finals performance of The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea has got to be up there with the very best.

I'll put my list together when I have time, but it will definitely include Eikanger's "Concerto Grosso" from the 1998 Europeans, Dyke's "Between the Moon & Mexico" and YBS's "Music of the Spheres" Europeans, Glasgow).

Are you setting a closing date for nominations?
