Just read on 4BR that Wingates Solo Horn player, Julie Backhouse, has moved to a vacant horn position at Black Dyke. Vacant position? Wot vacant position!! Can anyone shed any light on the situation? As a horn player myself, wouldh've like to got my CV in a bit earlier (as if!!!)

As far as I'm aware yes he has left and the remaining horn section have moved up a seat hence the vacancy on 1st/2nd horn

I heard Arfon is now on solo, though I'm not sure if Alison Childs has moved up a seat?

I'm surprised about quiet this has been but I can unofficially confirm Arfon Owen is Solo horn - his mum told me and she is a hell of a lot faster than 4BR or the Bandsman!

Congratulations to Arfon - still a seat for you at Menai Bridge mate, just don't get any big ideas about playing Horn with us over Christmas while you're home - back to Eb Bass for you mate for carols!!!!!!

Shouldn't Arfon be allowed to make this announcement himself?!!! There's obviously a reason why he and Black Dyke have kept it quiet! Good on you mate, another top seat held by a Welshman in one of Englands best bands!!!

Julie's in my quartet at Northern, I met Alison in Summer on the International Brass Band Summer course, and I don't know Arfon...

Arfon was on solo at Dyke's christmas concert yesterday, he had a solo in Little Drummer Boy (I think), he's got a great sound. Having never heard him before it was a nice surprise!

And just to go off topic a bit - the downside was no Peter Roberts, which was a bit of a disappointment! I didn't envy his replacement, although she did a great job.

I thought he had some dental work done which was why Richard Marshall played the sop solo at the Nationals? Although he might have just been out on a works xmas do!
