Just out of interest, what does the 'champion band' award mean? Since in the 3rd section it was the 3rd placed, not first, who were the 'champion band'.

A "Champion Band" award is based on the results of the 3 Welsh contest. i.e.

    Ebbw Vale
West Wales ( this alternates between Ammanford and Burryport)
    Treorchy.

points are totted up and hey presto you have a "Champion Band"

for this purpose the Regionals don't count.

this title has been going for some time but recently it was decided to award it to the Welsh Regional winners. However most of the bands were very unhappy about this because some of the big boys only go to the Regionals and can walk away with the title without bothering about the smaller contests. So it was decided to keep a "Champion Band" award for the Welsh contests. Besides there are all those trophys sitting there and without an award they would be redundant.

To the Bands that compete in the 3 Welsh contests this ward that is made at the end of the year is very important.

The Championship Section Bands played "Diversions on a Brass Theme" by George LLoyd.

It was a set test piece.

Not strictly true, I'm afraid. The Champion Band of Wales is the band winning the Welsh regional championships. Champion Band in the context of these 3 contests has the rather longer title of (I think) Champion Band of West and Southeast Wales.

Yes you are right on the "Champion Band of Wales" title. The one awarded at the end of the year has a more complicated title as you said. That's why I said "a Champion Band" rather than "The Champion Band of Wales"when referring to the that one and whatever it's correct title is it still important to the bands that compete in these contests. They still like to have a trophy to go for. At least they have 3 chances at getting it but there is only one chance for "The Champion Band of Wales".

I am still trying to find out positions for the 3rd Section. Still only know the top 3 plus 5th. It makes it much easier when the positions are shown on the adjudication.

I never said it's not important. As a member of this years 1st Section Champion Band, I know how much it means. I was just getting the pedantic bit in before Dyl :p
