My mate and I are flying into LGW on March 11th. He was a bit thick in purchasing the same flight as I and is on a different plane arriving an hour before me :S

What do you recommend he do during that time. Keep in mind...whilst I am quite familiar with the LSC it is his first trip out of the Americas.

I don't remember Gatwick all that well, but I'll start with some options that come to mind.

    1) Just wait around mindlessly in the lobby waiting for MY luggage to come in.
    2) Take the train before me to Watford and I can catch up with him later at "The Old Flag" or "Escort Arms"
    3) Go to the hotel bar...where I can meet him.

    Any others?

Stay at the airport and wait for you, so much easier!

Stay at Gatwick, so much easier and there's a bar there to keep you occupied!

Which airline are you coming in on? If Continental/Virgin/US Airways/BA, they all have an arrivals lounge depending on your frequent flyer status. (BA in North Terminal, remainder in South).
From memory, most US flights arrive between 6 & 9 and in my experience, are generally early! (something to do with tail winds).
More bar and eating options non airside at South terminal (upstairs in Gatwick Village) than at the North.
Immigration can take a while - I've always found it faster at the North terminal so depends where he's arriving.
In summary, find a bar and wait!

Yea, a good magazine, good music and a few drinkies will kill an hour in no time... best he stay in the airport rather than getting lost in the big city!

So there are airport bars? I can't seem to remember any except the frequent flyer lounges...perhaps because I have always been in a rush off to get into town.

He'll be flying in on Northwest Airlines (South Terminal) and I'll be coming in on Delta (North Terminal)

I'll have a mobile phone, but he won't so I'm not sure the best way to meet up. Does anybody know the names of any specific bars outside of security (preferrebly at the North Terminal) I can meet him at?

    Have a look HERE

The maps of the terminals are exceptionally helpful.

I would suggest you meet at the South Terminal as that is where the railway station is if you have onward travel by train.

There are loads of places you can pinpoint to meet both on the lower and upper levels.

    Good luck.

P.S. Your friend should get a phone :D;)

If needed, he can rent a cell phone at the airport - I recall there is a place very close to the arrivals exit in the South Terminal.

Its one of the better airports... go shopping or sit in a cafe/bar and wait!

All I know about Gatwick is that there's rumoured to be a lift, where if you press the right combination of keys you get taken down into the bowels of the airport where there is a secret alien research lab. I realise this isn't a lot of help, but it might help him while away a few hours before he gets carted away by security for breaking the lift.
The person who told me this was on drugs at the time, but hey, it sounds pretty plausible to me...

Pick a franchise, probably a bar, and sit tight. Then when you arrive later, he'll be in one of a maximum of four places. See you at Stevenage, Pat!
