Top weekend for Horbury Friday 30 September saw the Horbury Victoria Band playing to a packed house at Ossett Town Hall for the annual Ossett Rotary and Phoenix Concert. The band, with its new conductor Bob Walker, played a varied programme which included Granada, Tara’s Theme, Irish Blessing and Ticket to Ride and solo items from Fay Hanmer, Paul Thewlis and David Lepley with comedy items by Dave Thompson! Part of the band’s programme was to accompany the soloist of the evening; singer Charlotte Wells, who was once a player in the band. Charlotte’s programme included the popular numbers I Dreamed a Dream, Misty and As If We Never Said Goodbye which brought resounding applause from the packed audience. On Sunday 2nd October attention was turned to the Intermediate Youth Band which took part in the Huddersfield & District Brass Band Association Youth Contest. Playing to a packed hall the band, playing its programme Lloyd, The New Recruit and the test-piece Super Trouper, gained a creditable second place behind the winners Boarshurst Youth with Houghton Area Youth in third place. “A very good result,” commented the band’s conductor Tom Greatorex, “… and all in all a very good weekend for the Horbury Victoria Band.” The Youth Band’s next contest will be the Tameside Youth Entertainment Contest on the 27 November.
