Intermittent slowness is often caused by the architecture that the ISP is using. In many cable-based systems, all the customers attached to a particular "terminal" share the bandwidth - so that if someone connected to the same box as you are is using a lot of bandwidth, your service will slow down.

Is there anyway to stop these porn spammers?

I'm sure it must be frustrating and tedious for the mods to keep deleting and blocking them.

I have as many spam blockers, filters and account creation controls in place as are provided with the software Hells Bones... it is a right pain I know, but aside from blocking all new registrations, there's not much else in addition I can do I'm afraid.

We're usually very quick to deal with them though, but I do wish they'd get lost!

How are they getting round the CAPTCHA (distorted symbols) system? I'm sure I saw one when I registered.

You're assuming that these are automated spam attacks. However, there are other ways to do this sort of thing. Most of this kind of spam is not done with programming, rather, it is done by humans who are paid to post the entries (many of these people are in eastern Europe or China). The entry text can be done easily via cut-and-paste, so one person could conceivably post a large number of entries in multiple forums (meaning not just here on tMP, but anywhere) in a short period of time.
